Did you regret grey carpet?

We are about to get our stairs, landing and 2 bedrooms done. We will get the same carpet throughout. We initially said grey as it's versatile, but the more I think about it the more I'm unsure.

We had a light cream before, bad choice with two babies at the time!

Does it get boring? Do you wish you went for another colour? We haven't decided on pain colours for the walls yet, but they won't be grey!

I don’t like grey in general, but just got a light grey carpet in our bedroom to go with our light blue walls and I think it looks nice. Our house was rented out before we bought it and had mid grey carpets throughout and the flat we rented before buying had speckled grey carpets too because it’s very forgiving of marks and stains.

EmmieC · 08/10/2020 12:12

Well, it’s obviously not just Essex is it? People all over the UK have followed the same trend. No need to be rude.

TOFO1965 · 08/10/2020 12:53

@happyfeet245 thank you! It's Westex Ultima Twist. The grade is Ultima (the deepest tuft you can use on stairs) and (I think..) the colour is Mercury. I'm trying to remember where I bought it from (it was online- HUGELY cheaper, I saved about a grand) and if I can find I'll post a definite about the colour.

QuestionableMouse · 08/10/2020 12:55

I have it in my bedroom and it's a nice cool neutral that goes with pretty much everything. One downside is I have a black cat and it shows every hair.

BiddyPop · 08/10/2020 13:00

We have grey in the sitting room, having replaced a dark-ish natural brown colour a few years back. It's a darker, north facing room anyway, and it goes well with dark brown leather seats and a black footstool. Walls, bookshelves and blinds are all cream. It actually seems to hide the dirt better and get less marked than the brown carpet did.

DueNumberTwo · 08/10/2020 13:27

We've got a mink coloured carpet which I feel is the best of both worlds as it goes with any colour but is still neutral.

MintyIguana · 08/10/2020 16:48

We have a warm grey. I like it. It's called Knightsbridge twist in mineral.

I wouldn’t buy a house with a grey carpet.

You know you can change the carpets for something like 1% of the average cost of a house? Possibly a third of that in London?

RandomLondoner · 08/10/2020 17:30

You don't have to like grey as a colour to think grey is a good colour for a carpet. I assume the people who say they don't like grey have white walls, and it hasn't occurred to them that you can paint walls some other colour, and not rely on the carpets for colour.

I have walls in a light pure yellow and am getting grey carpets. The rooms won't be grey, they'll be yellow.

HowLongToXmas · 08/10/2020 17:52

We have pale grey carpet upstairs. White walls. White furniture. Love it!

Antonino99 · 07/07/2021 08:36

To be honest, I am not really fascinated with grey items since I believe that the truly tasteful people would never spend money on them and would never pay attention to them. However, the one thing I'm addicted to are carpets; I'm always looking for those extra-soft rugs. I have a specific affection for rugs, and many people don't understand why, they believe it's a useless waste of money. Maybe it's odd, but I like them, and I'm looking for new carpets www.rugsdoneright.com/ for my area rug right now because the old ones are getting old and I'm tired of them.

CoffeeWithMyOxygen · 07/07/2021 08:46

We had grey in our last rental before we bought. Never again! It’s so dreary.

tallduckandhandsome · 07/07/2021 08:52

DH was keen on grey carpets, I wasn't bothered, but I actually really like them, they've worn well.

We found a good price, had the whole of the upstairs and stairs done for £1400.

Conchitastrawberry · 07/07/2021 09:04

We have dark grey everywhere, almost black. Nope don’t get bored with it. The walls are linen white which means I can change curtains, bedding and accessories if I want. I had cream before and the kids rooms it was really pale. After a couple of years, no matter how much I hoovered there was a line of black round the edges.

honeylulu · 07/07/2021 09:20

Grey is quite practical/generic and won't clash with most colours. It is a cold colour though so depends if that's what you're happy with.

I wanted navy blue carpets in my bedrooms but all the main brands only came in neutral colours. I chose a sort of heathery grey and it works better in some rooms than others. Looks lovely in the rooms which are painted pink or stone colour. Clashes a bit with my bedroom (orangey pink, please don't judge!) And clashes a lot in my study (teal). I wish I'd gone for a dark beige instead. I've just had the kids TV room done up with a dark beige carpet (and cafe au lait walls) and it's lovely. It's a basement room so I definitely didn't want it to feel "cold".

Stairs have dark red patterned carpet as a high traffic area. Hides a multitude of sins!

Celandines · 07/07/2021 09:24

I've got it upstairs. A flecked grey. It's great at not showing dirt. We had light beige last time!

garlictwist · 07/07/2021 09:34

I've noticed people always put grey carpets in on Homes under the Hammer when they are going to rent the house out. it's very blah and neutral, I think.

MrsToothyBitch · 07/07/2021 11:27

I moved into a house with a carpet that initially looked grey in the light I viewed it, found out it was brown which I didn't fancy. Planned to change it, saved up, and realised the brown is slightly warmer and still goes with lots and realised I like it!

Not saying don't go grey but would second Pps suggesting brownish colours to at least consider. The only flooring I'm changing now is new, lighter, less tatty lino in the bathroom as part of a revamp and wood flooring for the hall as I think it would suit better. I was adamant I'd get grey when I moved in!

FijiCavanaugh · 07/07/2021 12:13

I have blue carpets on the stairs that look almost silvery grey in some lights. I have blue walls and they look great and would also go with a warmer colour. They have a fleck so look OK even when unhoovered like in the picture. When I moved in, the carpet was black and always looked minging so avoid dark colours. The rest of the house has hard floors.

Also seem to have same upstairs layout as @Whatsmydoggy !

Did you regret grey carpet?
Theunamedcat · 07/07/2021 12:14

Yes it shows EVERYTHING

harriethoyle · 07/07/2021 12:42

I have grey in one of the sitting rooms, and I love it - very dog friendly in terms of hiding pawprints etc! I've paired it with cream walls, stained pine skirts, windowsills etc, dark red curtains, and dark wood sideboard and coffee table. It's really cosy in the winter with the stove on and it's still light and airy in the summer.

harriethoyle · 07/07/2021 12:45

Yes @FijiCavanaugh I agree that the little fleck is crucial for disguise! I had a glorious black carpet in my first home, up a wide staircase... looked amazing for ten minutes after hoovering then terrible!

Aprilinspringtimeshower · 07/07/2021 12:52

Just moved into a grey house. I hate the grey carpets. It’s cold and dark- like a cave. I don’t think grey goes with everything at all. It just dominates bless its very very pale.
The worst is they’re in good condition and quite new
I’m trying to justify the expense of ripping them all out.
I have always gone for pale “honey” colour- the colour of pale oak. That has worked for me for many years in different homes. Never got bored with it. Very neutral and warm. If you’re having carpet you want something that makes a room feel warm. It also blends nicely with the hard wood floors in other rooms as same colour.

If you have wood floors then I’d say go for something same sort of shade so it blends well around the house.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 07/07/2021 12:56

I've just moved into my house. The wallpaper upstairs on the stairs is a sort of greige/mushroom colour. I have oak floors downstairs, and the colour of the carpet looks really odd next to the floor. Grey is my least favourite colour for decorating, so the carpet will be going!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 07/07/2021 12:56

Carpet, not wallpaper!!
