Did you regret grey carpet?

We are about to get our stairs, landing and 2 bedrooms done. We will get the same carpet throughout. We initially said grey as it's versatile, but the more I think about it the more I'm unsure.

We had a light cream before, bad choice with two babies at the time!

Does it get boring? Do you wish you went for another colour? We haven't decided on pain colours for the walls yet, but they won't be grey!

Mine is "greige". I love it. Goong from cream to that was absolutely brilliant. Hides so many marks.

mallowa · 08/10/2020 09:20

I got a grey carpet in my living room (rented property with young child - wanted something that hid stains!) and when they put it in I cried. It really sucks the life out of a room :(. I did get more used to it after a while but for the living room for me again it's a definite no-no. Stairs or something I could probably tolerate.

TatianaBis · 08/10/2020 09:27

I don’t regret my grey carpet as I don’t have any. I regret other people’s grey carpet as I’m currently looking for an investment property and literally every property has grey carpet throughout. Very institutional. It’s actually a relief to find a house that doesn’t have it.

TOFO1965 · 08/10/2020 09:29

No, I don’t regret at all. It’s almost a neutral, goes with everything. I only have on stairs and upstairs. Downstairs all hard flooring.

We have carpet that is technically light grey, it's called cloud, but it's so subtle in its greyness it almost looks cream. Has a much warmer tone than silvery greys, it's really hard to describe but I absolutely recommend it! I was worried about the house looking grey (off white walls) but the carpets have warmth in them and work well with a variety of furniture woods. We have oak in most rooms, some white and some dark mango (not in all the same room!) and it works with each of them.

notheragain4 · 08/10/2020 09:36

I just don't know what else I'd pick as beige/oatmeal (what we used to have) just feels quite dated to me now. I think grey will be here for this carpet lifecycle.

notheragain4 · 08/10/2020 09:37

@TOFO1965 that's very similar to what I'm trying to describe.

The office I work in has all grey carpets, it has put me off ever seeing grey carpets in a house.

Cocomarine · 08/10/2020 09:43

Grey carpet stairs, landing, stairs to loft and loft room. For about 5 years - still love it! Doesn’t look office like at all. I don’t really get why people think that - as my home is so obviously not an office. It is really deep pile, nothing like an office Smile I also think that people who find grey cold, aren’t choosing warm grey tones - there is a lot of variation.
I have a LOT of colour too - not to offset the grey, but because I like it.

I couldn’t give a shit whether anyone thought it was “Hinch” (I think my cobwebs and dust would dispel that anyway! Grin) partly because none of my friends think that way - and partly because even if they did, so what?

Yeah, you might get bored... but I don’t see why you’d get more bored with grey than any other colour or pattern. Bored is a function of time I think, not design.

jackstini · 08/10/2020 09:44

Don't regret it at all, have various shades - pale silvery grey in bedroom to go with white/pink/silver, deep rich grey in living room for cosiness, mid grey stairs and landing to show least muck!

Loads of colours go with it if you don't like the all grey Mrs Hinch effect. We have used purple, pink, green, grey, rose gold and teal in various rooms. It's so much easier to accessorise than beige (used to have beige/cream about 10 years ago)

Faultymain5 · 08/10/2020 10:06

We have grey in all the bedrooms but a nice striped carpet on the stairs and landing.

No regrets with the grey at all.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 08/10/2020 10:20

We have a mix of light grey carpet and wooden floors and don't regret the carpet colour at all. Found it matches well with a whole host of colours (but I wouldn't have light grey carpet and grey walls).

Whatsmydoggy · 08/10/2020 10:39

Is that a dog/cat laying on the carpet or a wierd shadow?

Grin

That's my cat Grin. Black cat that likes to lie at the top of the stairs and almost black carpet is not a good combination let me tell you that Grin

Alexandernevermind · 08/10/2020 10:45

I love my grey carpets because the colour blends beautifully with oak furniture. It seems to give it a lift that no other neutral can do. I have one reception room with a British countryside stormy feel - grey base with blues and greens with stags and pheasant pictures. Another room is more summery, with denim, teals and pinky reds.

MasksGlovesSoapScrubs · 08/10/2020 10:52

I love grey and would love to have grey carpets. We are renting and although the carpets were new when we moved in they're brown. 🤢

MJMG2015 · 08/10/2020 11:17

[quote AllDayHappyHour]I did not want any grey but found this amazing wall colour by Valspar which is a very light lilac/blue grey as I wanted a neutral wall. We then went with what I would call a "greige" carpet. It's like a grey but not, we had beige in our old house and I found that dated quickly and while I'd prefer cream (oh the dream!) we have children haha. This is the carpet which I'd recommend you get a sample off, it shows as dark in the picture but it really isn't and we have it in the living room and will have it for the stairs and landing too.

I really like that. A showroom near me has it, so I'll go & have a look. Do you remember
which 'grade' you went for and how well has it worn? I might get a harder wearing grade for the lounge, office & hallway (lounge has a real tracking path due to having a door at each end), but might go for a more luxury grade for the bedrooms.

LindaEllen · 08/10/2020 11:21

I love grey carpets and will be getting them throughout as and when we get each room done. They don't look mucky too quickly (I've made the cream/white mistake in the past) and they let you do whatever you want with walls and other features etc.

Tunnocks34 · 08/10/2020 11:26

No I love it. We have loads of different colour walls too, navy, white, grey, red and blue Spider-Man wall paper, olive green - all of which go with the grey carpet.

It’s great is it doesn’t look overly grubby despite the fact I have three sons!

blubberball · 08/10/2020 11:37

I have a couple of grey carpets. I like them.

happyfeet245 · 08/10/2020 11:41

@TOFO1965

Do you have a link to yours by any chance? It's lovely!

MagpieSong · 08/10/2020 11:43

We had grey (mottled) carpet in a rental property and I longed to pull it up, somehow it always looked dusty or grimy, even after steam cleaning. I found it cold and unappealing, but it was likely to also have been a cheap carpet and had a horrid texture, so a nice chosen carpet might be different - all I know is that particular carpet put me off!

EmmieC · 08/10/2020 11:43

We have grey carpet in almost the whole house. (Apart from kitchen and bathrooms). Ours is a silvery type though so not dull like others. I didn’t want a really dark or light one as expecting a baby. We want to buy a bigger house soon though and mainly chose grey as it’s the in thing now because of Mrs Hinch Smile

Di11y · 08/10/2020 11:46

I've got it in my daughter's bedroom as the best colour to go with the lilac walls and white wood. Any other colour would have looked odd.

It’s the in thing in Essex.
TatianaBis · 08/10/2020 11:49

Which basically means it’s over.
