To drink a bottle of Bailey’s 2.5 years out of date?!

To be precise, it’s a 500ml bottle of Bailey’s Chocolat Luxe, and it would be a crime to waste it. I’d have no qualms if it were a mere 1.5 years old, but it has BBE 05/18 on the base.

It’s unopened, and unrefridgerated. AIBU to look forward to it at the weekend? I would have it over ice of course, so presumably that might kill some germs*
(*clutches at straws)

I can’t decide so need MN to be definitive for me...

It will taste disgusting! I had old Baileys once and it was... cheesy 🤢

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 07/10/2020 14:40

Open it, look at it and smell it

MangoBiscuit · 07/10/2020 14:41

Much like schmalex says, it's VERY obvious when Baileys is off. By all means, open it and check. If it isn't foul, cheesy and rancid, then enjoy! But perhaps have a back up plan, and a bucket near by.

Plump82 · 07/10/2020 14:43

Despite the alcohol content once you open the bottle you will know ywbu to even consider it!

TeapotCollection · 07/10/2020 14:43

Seeing as it’s unopened I’d drink it, as long as (as others have said) it smells ok

MJMG2015 · 07/10/2020 14:48

Drink lots of 'out of date' Baileys. I'd definitely give it a bit if a shake & pour! I've never had one that wasn't ok, not even when they've been opened previously (and I have an easily upset stomach)

I imagine it'll be pretty obvious if it's 'off'

Not even sure if baileys is a 'best before' or 'use by' item..but either way, it can be ignored!!

EggbertHeartsTina · 07/10/2020 14:49

Not sure I’ve ever drank IN date Baileys Grin

Sniff test and get on with it OP!

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 07/10/2020 14:50

I would (and have)

unmarkedbythat · 07/10/2020 14:51

Baileys can go off?

AmandaHugenkiss · 07/10/2020 14:51

I spent one Christmas with a three day episode of D&V after drinking old Baileys. It had been previously opened though.

Drinker beware!

peachypetite · 07/10/2020 14:52

It can definitely go off. You’ll know when you open it

AmandaHugenkiss · 07/10/2020 14:59

Should mention I have a terrible sense of smell, so might have been my own fault for drinking off Baileys.....!

MoistMolly · 07/10/2020 15:23

Baileys has a best before????

Chanjer · 07/10/2020 16:10

It'll be lumpy/split if there's anything wrong with it

Unopened I'd be very surprised if it's turned

Abraid2 · 07/10/2020 16:11

I find it very sickly but I imagine all that sugar would keep it fine to consume for decades!

JosiePyeTheOriginalMeanGirl · 07/10/2020 16:23

Sadly, I don't believe ice will do diddly against harmful bacteria. If you were boiling it, that might make a difference, but only to kill bacteria. It won't do much to improve the flavour, if it's gone off. (Yuck.)

gamerchick · 07/10/2020 16:24

It'll probably be off but you'll know I think once you've poured it.

oohyoudevilyou · 07/10/2020 16:27

I woud try it - if it tastes or smells bad, I'd tip it away. If it seems OK, I'd take a chance. I am healthy and have a very robust digestive system though!

AriesTheRam · 07/10/2020 16:27

With it not being a spirit and cream based id be careful.good luck!

katieJ82 · 07/10/2020 16:42

Having had the misfortune to find a bottle of old Baileys at the back of my in-laws drinks cupboard I can confirm as others have said it's very very obvious if it's gone off - it curdles! Wouldn't happen in this house. I only allow myself one bottle a year at Xmas and it barely makes it to new year.

Might be ok if unopened. If I were you I would check now so you are not disappointed at the weekend!

Gobbycop · 07/10/2020 16:52

Why are people surprised it can go off?

It's got cream in it ffs.

Leylafrenchie · 07/10/2020 16:54

Open it now and try some to check Grin

AliceLutherNeeMorgan · 07/10/2020 17:52

Thank you!

Not quite definitive, so I am indeed going to open it this evening. My sense of smell is pretty good so hopefully I’ll get some advance warning if it’s totally rotten.

For those asking - yes, even normal Bailey’s has a bbe (on the label on the back) now although I’ve ignored it to about 12 months in the past...

Was it any good????

StillCoughingandLaughing · 07/10/2020 19:44

Unopened will be fine. I have a bottle of mince pie flavour creme liqueur that has been lurking for many a Christmas and it’s still fine - and that’s open.
