Genuine question but why do so many people have photos of cannulas and bruising?

hopefulhalf · 07/10/2020 19:32

Can you tell me where they hurt least/ are least bother ? I usually go for back of ghe hand first (non-dominant if possible). But then often go for the houseman's vien (the one at the base of the thumb) or the ACF (crook of the elbow) , where would be better ?

Bubblemonkey · 07/10/2020 19:36

I had a thick [grey, second to biggest that you can get] motherfucker in my wrist after I had my bladder out. That was sore. It was also sore after it came out.

UpCloseAndPersonalWithGlenda · 07/10/2020 19:36

@KylieKangaroo

I had one in my wrist and let me tell you it was bloody awful, especially when you have next to no fat on you which I didn't.

Poor old OP. Perhaps better not accept any more offers of Cake if you want to have the Full Cannula Experience?

PhilSwagielka · 07/10/2020 19:43

Bully for you? I can deal with them in my arm but not my hand. One time I had a drip in my hand and the bastard moved and it was the worst pain I'd ever been in.

randomsabreuse · 07/10/2020 20:22

I have appealing looking veins in the back of my right (dominant) hand. Also had base of thumb in RH. Both marginally annoying.

Failed attempt at left crook of elbow. Went for nice veins in back of hand, no real bother.

Crook of right elbow was weird. Could not straighten my elbow for my first night with it in. Felt like it was locked or something! Could move it in the morning but hurt and coming out was worse than going in. Any ideas why? So I can avoid that experience again!

Yeah, that's fair. It's a bit 'VillageGreenPreservationSoc has checked into St Hypochondriac's/OMG are you ok babe/PM me hun; don't wanna say on here . . . '

In my case, I was illustrating to my babydaddy why I couldn't come and get the diet Dr Pepper just then . . . Still a bit self-absorbed, I agree.

sbhydrogen · 07/10/2020 20:27

I had my first cannula when I was in labour with DD. The midwife was putting the fluid in and it was so painful. Turned out she has gone through the vein and was filling the tissue in my hand.

Ouch!

IHateCoronavirus · 07/10/2020 20:31

Everyone is different 🤷‍♀️ I struggle more relating to the idea that labour can be “better than expected” it completely blows my mind. If someone would have handed me a scalpel I would have given myself a c-section! Grin

Daphnise · 07/10/2020 20:36

Well done and congratulations.

Any other weird boasts to share?

To diarise a traumatic experience I went through. It helped me process my thoughts. And survive.
Runkle · 07/10/2020 20:40

Congratulations. Have you thought about putting it on your CV? Hmm

DueNumberTwo · 07/10/2020 20:46

I've had a lot of cannulas and that's the only time I've been bruised by one so I took a picture. I took pictures of by every day life a lot while my dad was still alive as he lived 300 miles away and we chatted every day on WhatsApp 🤷🏼‍♀️

Oysterbabe · 07/10/2020 20:47

I'm really great at sleeping. I can hop into bed, close my eyes and be asleep in under a minute without fail.

notso · 07/10/2020 20:53

Thanks for explaining @ScarMatty @VillageGreenPreservationSoc and @NRatched

It was genuine curiosity not judging at all. Apologies if I came across as insensitive.

Mistystar99 · 07/10/2020 20:53

I hated having a cannula. It hurt, and it ached.
In the next bed to me, an older woman was bruised all up her arm from her cannula. She was so thin, the purple went from her finger tips to shoulder.
On the other hand, I've never had any period pains, ever.
I haven't started a thread about how jammy I am about period pain. Why would I when I know how horrible it is for other people.
But you enjoy your pain free cannulas!!! Gloaty fuckwad.

ktp100 · 07/10/2020 20:53

It depends on the state of people's veins. My Mum's collapsed after a month in ICU, they've had a nightmare getting them in ever since and her hands are black & blue afterwards.

notso · 07/10/2020 20:54

Sorry and you @DueNumberTwo

ktp100 · 07/10/2020 20:54

....(contd) Actually, come to think of it, at one point they had to sew it into her neck as they couldn't get it into her hands.

Not a pleasant experience, I'm sure.

Family1st2020 · 07/10/2020 20:56

Im generally OK. However 1 I had wasn't in properly and they were trying to flush it through before adding meds and it was agony.
So they moved to other arm. And the bruise it left, no exaggeration went from my wrist to knuckles and up the inner forearm to elbow. The bruise was there 7 weeks.

Not at all. I thought even while I was taking it that it was a bit "Check me out! I'm poorly!" 😂 Fair enough to the ladies whose reasons were less self-indulgent :(
Hollyhobbi · 07/10/2020 21:34

On my first admission for hyperemesis gravidarum they ran out of veins in my arms and hands. They were discussing if I should have next one put in my foot! Thankfully they called an anaesthetist who literally got the last vein in the crook of my arm. Once after major surgery the junior doctor on call blew two veins in my hand and one in my arm. Because I was on a high dose of blood thinners the bruises were spectacular. Luckily an anaesthetist came to the rescue again and I got a few days out of that cannula! I really wish I didn't find them painful op! The worst one I ever had was close to the knuckle of the little finger on my right hand. It was so sore I can still feel itSad.

ScarMatty · 07/10/2020 21:42

@Hollyhobbi

Oh I was the same and I am one of the odd ones who documented them all with pictures!

I had an ankle cannula but ended up with a PICC line in the end

StepAwayFromGoogle · 07/10/2020 21:45

I've had two cannulas, one with each DC and f*ck me they hurt. The labour was worse, I grant you, but my hand hurt for weeks afterwards.
