I’ve had Loads and they had one be painful. I’m surprised that most other people find them painful.

I had one in the back of my hand during labour. It was more painful than the birth - mainly because they tried about five times in my right hand unsuccesfully and then after several attempts got the massive bloody needle into. It hurt a lot.

rorosemary · 07/10/2020 13:31

I'm very ok with all types of needles and would happily let students do their thing even though I have very difficult veins. I just don't consciously register the pain for some reason. I can't swallow pills to save my life though. I guess we all have different thresholds.

Pelleas · 07/10/2020 13:31

I find them OK for a while but they gradually become sore, especially when they are left in for a few days. Afterwards I always have a bruise.

Last time I was in hospital it seemed to take ages to get anyone to come and remove cannulas that were about to go out of date and I was told not to pull them out myself.

Dasboot · 07/10/2020 13:31

Well I’ve got the lowest pain threshold known to man and they’ve hurt like fuck when they’ve been put in and every time I’ve moved my arm or hand until they’ve been removed again. So there you go.

MitziK · 07/10/2020 13:31

Ugh, they're always incredibly painful at the base of my thumb, so I ask for them to go in the back of my hand.

Its apparently unusual for me to ask, but I suppose it depends upon the shape/size of your hand as well as how well they're inserted.

randomsabreuse · 07/10/2020 13:36

From recent experiences I prefer back of hand to crook of arm. Fine with arm for blood tests but canulars much better in my hand!

wildthingsinthenight · 07/10/2020 13:38

I've had hundreds. Some painful some not.
Depends on pain threshold, the site, health of patient etc

VinylDetective · 07/10/2020 13:39

Try having one put in by a junior doctor doing it for the first time and then get back to me.

powershowerforanhour · 07/10/2020 13:39

I can easily tell the difference between red and green, AIBU to be surprised some people can't? Grin

wildthingsinthenight · 07/10/2020 13:40

Weirdest stealth brag ever
Agreed!?

U812 · 07/10/2020 13:46

@Frappuccinofan

I have small veins so practitioners always struggle to draw blood, the one time I had a cannula they actually placed it in my hand! It was so bloody uncomfortable
That is always the first place they try with me. Is this not normally the first try site? I have a sort of warning note about how hard it is to take blood or insert a cannula so maybe this is why they always try my hand? In the foot is awful 😔
squeekums · 07/10/2020 13:48

@FatCatThinCat

ive never had one sad

I'm pretty sure that's a breach of your basic human rights. You need to log that with the police!

I feel it is too. Screw cops, this needs government intervention

Are they found in tesco? an aussie store has just partnered with them so i hope to find them here lol

Namechangearoo · 07/10/2020 13:49

@User4647

I don’t mean it in a bad way I just feel it’s over so quickly that it doesn’t hurt me. I know it probably varies due to veins and how good the person is.
How GOOD the person is? Do you mean I’ve done something bad in a previous life and that’s why I find cannulas painful?
Namechangearoo · 07/10/2020 13:49

Oh, wait. You mean the person administering. Ok, as you were Wink

GingerScallop · 07/10/2020 13:50

Hang on. Am looking for your gold medal

TH22 · 07/10/2020 13:51

What a bizarre post.

loubieloo4 · 07/10/2020 13:53

Oh, I should probably go and tell my amazing dh that he is a wimp then. I might have to wait until his chemo has finished at around 4pm as he has to go in alone.....

He is 40 and stage 4 terminal and already out lived his life expectancy. The chemo has ruined his veins and even with a port in he finds it very painful.

Op I hope you never have to find out how painful they can be

DueNumberTwo · 07/10/2020 13:53

I don't usually find them painful but this one inserted in labour was bloody sore. Every time the blood pressure cuff inflated my hand puffed up while it was in.

Sickoffamilydrama · 07/10/2020 13:53

I was a nurse and got very good at putting Cannula's in other areas used to call me to help them when they couldn't cannulate and eventhose of us who like me got good at it sometimes got it.in the wrong spot. You are literally stabbing something that can move is mm wide and you don't know how deep.

I used to let a college practice non me and my goodness it does hurt if you get it wrong!

I’m surprised that people are surprised....

Good for you op.

When inserting a cannula I see a variety of responses. No one as brave as you though op.

@loubieloo4 I'm sorry your dh is so unwell. It's inhumane that you can't be with him for treatment (although I understand the reasonings). Flowers

Haenow · 07/10/2020 13:57

Well done on being the bravest.
I don’t find cannulas painful but some drugs going through them can be.
I don’t judge anyone for funding any medical procedure unpleasant. I’d never want them to feel shit at a time they’re vulnerable. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Utini · 07/10/2020 13:58

I had one before my caesarean. It was quick, straightforward, went in on the first attempt. I still found it more uncomfortable / painful than having the spinal!
