I’ve had Loads and they had one be painful. I’m surprised that most other people find them painful.

Weirdest stealth brag ever Grin

What a ridiculous thread.
Mumsnet fuckery at its best.

My friend had a horrific time being treated for cancer and found cannulas incredibly painful. Hope that makes you feel better op?

DemolitionBarbie · 07/10/2020 11:47

I never found it that painful either, but then when I had them I'd recently been in labour.

Both times my baby kept brushing against it and waggling the needle about!

randomsabreuse · 07/10/2020 11:47

Mostly they've been ok once in, last one I had was an utter bastard though. In elbow, couldn't straighten my arm for about 8 hours after. Worst bit was getting it out though. Person taking it out had a real nightmare, they were shaking. I had to lie down for about 15 minutes afterwards to avoid fainting/vomiting. No idea why as hasn't bruised visibly but obviously it was a bit weird.

endofthelinefinally · 07/10/2020 11:48

I have had loads. Sometimes they hurt more than others. Most of my veins are destroyed now, so I do end up having them in awkward places.
I am used to it now so I am quite stoical. Doesn't mean it is painless.

rainydayslover · 07/10/2020 11:49

I had one during labour and it hurt more than labour itself as they couldn't put it on properly. My hand started swelling and my vein felt like it was going to burst. After giving birth, I have pictures holding DS with loads of bruises on my hands. They sting and hurt a lot when they aren't put properly. My DS also had one the second he was out my womb, they struggled to find the vein and he was screaming so much.

ZaraW · 07/10/2020 11:49

YABU. My veins are very weak after chemo. For me they are very painful trying to find a vein. One time it took the nurse 6 attempts.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 07/10/2020 11:50

Readmitted to hospital when DD1 was about a week old. Had two drips. One in each hand. Once they were in, they weren’t painful but really uncomfortable. They were in for days though and they started to get painful. Injecting the antibiotics was most definitely painful though. Nearly brought me to tears a couple of times.

tryingharder92 · 07/10/2020 11:51

Just when I thought my day couldn't get any better!! Well dun hun.

User4647 · 07/10/2020 11:51

I don’t mean it in a bad way I just feel it’s over so quickly that it doesn’t hurt me. I know it probably varies due to veins and how good the person is.

But what is the point of your post?

022828MAN · 07/10/2020 11:54

You're weird, OP.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 07/10/2020 11:54

If you know that op, then why are you surprised others find it painful Confused

Are you the poo troll who has now had a power up and you're now a cannula troll 😂😂

Were you hoping for loads of stories about it 😂

ScribblyGum · 07/10/2020 11:54

What a monumentally bizarre post.

Merryhobnobs · 07/10/2020 11:55

I've had one a few times now and the last one I did have did end up becoming very painful. I had a lump thing form and I couldn't bend my wrist. This was after it had been in for quite a while though. I've also had non painful ones and one that due to the circumstances surrounding getting it still cause my hand to itch and cause flashbacks when talking about it. I am just one person with varying experiences. Don't be so judgmental.

Honeyandapple · 07/10/2020 11:55

Painful / uncomfortable yes.

ZaraW · 07/10/2020 11:56

You can say that for a lot of things. You just need to understand everyone's different. Also, it depends how experienced the nurse is.

I don't find mammograms painful but plenty of people do. I don't wonder why I'm so special though.

FatGirlShrinking · 07/10/2020 11:57

Once they're in, apart from an occasional pinching feeling I don't find them painful, but, I have crap veins and it usually takes at least 4 attempts to get blood from me or find a good vein for an IV.

This was my arm after they had to stick me 11 times to find an IV site, they eventually went in on the top of my foot.

So it's great that you don't find it painful and long may that continue, but as with everything we are all different and have different experiences.

Sceptre86 · 07/10/2020 11:58

In my arm they have not been a problem. At the end of my thumb just above wrist, the pain was hellish.

WaltzForDebbie · 07/10/2020 11:58

I was in early stages labour with my son. When they inserted a cannula it went in the wrong place and they had to faff about reinserting it. It was soooo painful and it triggered my contractions. I went from one every 10 mins to back to back contractions and he was born less than an hour later with the most intense and painful of my 4 labours.

I normally have a high pain threshold but the pain from the cannula was much worse than even my labour pains. Apparently I have small veins?!

Howlooseisyourgoose · 07/10/2020 11:58

I don’t get headaches

workhomesleeprepeat · 07/10/2020 12:01

Wow people are different?? No way!! I’m so surprised. Shocked. Bewildered. How ever can it be Hmm

sapnupuas · 07/10/2020 12:01

Come back when standing on Lego doesn't hurt.

Then I'll be impressed.

ShalomToYouJackie · 07/10/2020 12:02

This was my hand last month after a cannula. It bloody hurt.

Does it really surprise you that a needle sitting in your hand that catches on things and prevents you moving your hand properly can hurt for some people?

I had one in the back of my hand when I was in labour and that was fine.

But years before I'd taken part in a study for hay fever and nearly fainted when they tried to put one in, so every time they took blood they just took it from my arm instead. Being stabbed in my arm about 8 times was preferable to having that thing on the back of my hand!
