AIBu to think my tenant throwing me shade?

Ive got a tenant and she’s from South America. She’s ok, clean.

I wonder if she’s being rude or not.

I got a new kitchen, got rid of the awful one I had before which was small and had painted doors.

The sink is now black. Before I had a silver sink that was probably twenty years.
Her reaction to the new sink - oh why did you get rid of the silver sink, it matched.

My kitchen matches. It’s black, white, stainless steel and Dark grey.

OP posts:
Howlooseisyourgoose · 06/10/2020 21:03

I found it strange going from a stainless steel to a ceramic sink.

Maybe she finds the change strange and is just adjusting?

wafflyversatile · 06/10/2020 21:07

She was probably just taken by surprise by the black sink and words came out of her mouth. I'm sure you've probably done similar yourself.

abcde · 06/10/2020 21:53

Failing to see how relevant your tenants nationality is here 🤷‍♀️

Brefugee · 06/10/2020 22:15

is there any reason you mentioned where she comes from?

You upgraded the kitchen in the house she's living in? any reason you didn't ask her if she had any preferences within reason?

Janegrey333 · 06/10/2020 22:21

Throwing you shade? That sounds like gangsta- speak.

GinWithRosie · 06/10/2020 22:24

I'm still stuck on the fact that you wrote that she is 'clean' straight after telling us her nationality 😱 What on earth does that insinuate, and what does it have to do with your post about the sink? I'm baffled!!

CoronaBollox · 06/10/2020 22:26

Disappointed in the lack of lamp throwing in the story.

She didnt cry with joy because you updated your house. Big woop.

CoronaBollox · 06/10/2020 22:27

P.S I dont like black sinks.

Wiredforsound · 06/10/2020 22:30

I’ve got a black sink and it is peng. Don’t let her diss your sink, fam.

Siw2020 · 06/10/2020 22:34

Why has this triggered you enough to go online and start a thread about it?

What does her nationality have to do with anything?

Shes not being rude. You are being unreasonable.
This is insignificant. Move on.

LunchBoxPolice · 06/10/2020 22:40

You know, I had a sinking feeling as I opened this thread, but it’s the complete composite of what I was expecting.

TrickyD · 06/10/2020 22:41

My twenty year old kitchen sink is black. I have always liked it.
Now I have a vague feeling of dissatisfaction. I wish I hadn’t read this thread.

nocoolnamesleft · 06/10/2020 22:45

What shade of black?

Howlooseisyourgoose · 06/10/2020 22:49

I've got a tenant and she’s from South America. She’s ok, clean.

And yes, this is a nasty insinuation.

FlouncerInDenial · 06/10/2020 22:50

@BewareTheBeardedDragon

I opened this expecting an exciting story of a physical altercation involving a flying lampshade.

Anyhoo - do you live in a hard water area? If so the black sink will be a bugger, if not impossible, to keep clean. I hate black sinks. I kinda get where you're coming from - the whole kitchen is better so she should be grateful. But I guess if she's living there then she has a right to an opinion? Doesn't seem particularly rude, though maybe a little tactless. Other cultures don't do tact the way the British do (it's much easier in many ways not to...)

That was my thought too. Black in a hard water area is going to look grim very quickly
AlwaysLatte · 06/10/2020 22:56

I don't know what you mean about shades and sinks. I'm trying to understand so I'm not being difficult... maybe tired though! Hope you get it sorted.

cantarina · 06/10/2020 22:57

OP I can't really work out why you are getting a hard time here. Maybe 'throwing me shade' wasn't quite the right phase but I think I get it. You're a landlord, you've replaced an old, knackered kitchen with a brand new kitchen and your tenant criticises the colour of the sink where many people would say how lovely it was to have a fresh new kitchen.

I agree with you, it's a bit rude of her.

CandyLeBonBon · 06/10/2020 23:00

@YouMatterTheMostLeast

The thread is asking am I being unreasonable
Yes. Yes you are

HTH

Anordinarymum · 06/10/2020 23:06

@Cocomarine

Do people actually say throwing me shade? 🤣
Only bloggers
Anordinarymum · 06/10/2020 23:07

@nocoolnamesleft

What shade of black?
For the sink or the tenant ?

What a shit thread

nocoolnamesleft · 06/10/2020 23:11

For the sink. I would not want to encourage the OP in describing the tenant, as I fear it would be extremely unpleasant.

Gingerandgivingzerofucks · 06/10/2020 23:14

Black sink? Wtaf?!

Word of advice, don’t get over involved with your tenants. They’re not your mates. Keep a professional distance. She shouldn’t be moaning about the new sink; does she often message you?

Anordinarymum · 06/10/2020 23:15

Exactly. So why did she feel the need to tell us where the tenant comes from and then say she's clean.

I wonder is she is also a Trophy Wife :)

BiBabbles · 06/10/2020 23:20

If English isn't a strong language/first language, this may not mean how it comes across. Match has a lot of synonyms. Even with typical English, I wouldn't neither assume the worst or dig into it.

I can see why it might be annoying after all the work, but it's not an insult or any other word for an insulting someone. It's likely was just unexpected and the first thing that came to mind.

Personally, I would find it odd if a sink was replaced if it was still in good condition and still fit (as it would with the colours listed) just because the rest of a chipping kitchen was replaced. For some, it would be normal to ask if they weren't expected it or from concerns there was some sort of unseen issue to replace something like that for something more unusual. I wouldn't - though I might ask if it looked like it might need special care what would needed.

whoopma · 06/10/2020 23:24

That's not shade
