Oh and my husband is buying me an engagement ring finally! I've decided on a rose gold, morganite and diamond affair from my favourite jewellery designer

HollywoodHandshake · 05/10/2020 20:49

SecretSpAD
It sounds lovely! Go for it, nowadays no one is too old to wear a traditional wedding dress, you just need to find the right one.

violetindigolilac · 05/10/2020 20:50

Seeing the dress is one of my favourite thing about weddings.

Mine too. My favourite was 2 gay women getting married, two amazing dresses. And whilst the wedding of 2 gay men was lovely, there was just no dress to ooh over Smile

SospanFrangipan · 05/10/2020 20:51

Personal preference. I loved my dress, paid through the nose for it, but I loved it and felt amazing in it.

Pukkatea · 05/10/2020 20:51

Each to their own, but I do think whatever the colour or price, it is nice if you wedding dress looks and feels special and not what you would wear everyday. The idea of wearing your wedding dress again is a bit odd to me.

violetindigolilac · 05/10/2020 20:53

Have to say though, this is like a thread about cats or dogs with no pictures. Share your white wedding gowns please!

LynetteScavo · 05/10/2020 21:02

as I'm clumsy I wanted a dress that doesn't show the wedding breakfast for the rest of the night.

Just how clumsy are you? Do you usually need a bib?

I love wedding dresses, there are so many different kinds. I love watching say yes to the dress. Weddings are usually boring though. And wedding food is usually very boring.

BryonyBev · 05/10/2020 21:04

Many modern wedding dresses remind me of Egyptian mummies, awfully tight up top. Dead boring. Like attending a museum, not a wedding!

Zaphodsotherhead · 05/10/2020 21:10

I had the most gorgeous green halterback dress with a train and beads sewn on the bodice. It was wonderful, cost me about £80 and I've still got it. Husband has long since gone.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 05/10/2020 21:10

I spent £400 on a gorgeous one from needle & thread and afterwards had it made into a cushion. No regrets!

ReeseWitherfork · 05/10/2020 21:12

@SecretSpAD I loved your post! I hope you get your day next year 🤞🏻

I roll my eyes at people who fall into that “too cool” category. People trying too hard to be something they’re not because they think onlookers will think they’re a sheepy moron if they get married in a white gown. My wedding was a lovely mix of traditional and unconventional but all of it was personal preference and I wouldn’t change a thing about it.

I sound smug. I guess I am a bit!

eaglejulesk · 05/10/2020 21:13

@BryonyBev -yes, that's exactly how they are. Wedding dresses used to be different and unique to the wearer, now so many of them are variations of the same theme. Boring indeed.

Krazynights34 · 05/10/2020 21:15

I absolutely loved my wedding dress, and I dreaded having to get one (church wedding).
Sadly it was slightly too big for me and the alterations were really noticeable (to me).
It was an Ian Stuart dress in honey and antique pink. My regrets are that I didn’t get the matching jacket and that I didn’t fight with the shop to get the size I knew would fit better.
It was kind of a fish tail dress but do much better than I can describe

RaisinsRuinEverything · 05/10/2020 21:15

Your blue dress sounds lovely OP and it’s great that you can wear it again! You want something that’s a bit special but not so special it gets moth eaten in the back of the wardrobe for 20 years!

HollywoodHandshake · 05/10/2020 21:18

I do feel some pity for the most bitter posters, and the fake "so boring so samey" Grin

Even Asos sells a decent variety of bridal outfits. Where do you shop that all dress are the same?

HoldMyLobster · 05/10/2020 21:20

I mostly agree with you OP, but having said that, I tried on one incredibly expensive wedding dress out of curiosity, and I did feel unbelievably glamorous in it. I think it was £6k, and that was over 20 years ago.

I didn't buy it, because I wasn't getting married in a cathedral with guests including George Clooney and the Queen. But it was nice to wear for 10 minutes and swish about a bit.

ReeseWitherfork · 05/10/2020 21:23

@HollywoodHandshake I’m assuming these are people who just have zero interest (or eye for) fashion and style generally. Nothing wrong with that. But I find it interesting that someone who isn’t interested in fashion would find wedding dresses “boring”. It feels like contradictory... spending enough time and effort to form any opinion would indicate some level of interest surely. Unless of course these are people who are very interested in fashion and therefore wish brides would be more daring?

Link to the netaporter dress? I want to swoon too!

unmarkedbythat · 05/10/2020 21:24

I liked mine but I didn't spend much on it. £120 iirc and even that I thought was a bit steep for a dress I would wear once. It was nice though. I felt really good in it :)

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/10/2020 21:28

First marriage and dress was just under £1k and half price - def wouidnt have spent £2k on it. Tho my dad did buy bless him

Sadly dh died but I met a lovely man and was meant to get married this May. Obv we didn’t :( and rebooked for next May

My second wedding dress is much cheaper. I tried on Many and couldn’t find one I liked - that didn’t look like first

But then found one online. Ordered 5 dresses ans sent 4 back

Dresses don’t need to be hundreds or god forbid thousands

CaptainPovey · 05/10/2020 21:33

My dress was red from Debenhams and 72 quid

Phrowzunn · 05/10/2020 21:34

I designed my own wedding dress from scratch and got to choose all the different fabrics and decide on all the little details so I found it anything but boring! I don’t really see how a blue dress from the high street you can wear to a party is less boring to be honest? Obviously it’s totally personal choice but Brides tend to want to wear something they would never wear on any other day, a once in a lifetime dress, something out of the ordinary, I thought that was kind of the whole deal?

VillageGreenPreservationSoc · 05/10/2020 21:37

I don't think the OP sounds 'jealous' (or even 'envious', which would be the right word) but I don't necessarily agree. I'd spend four grand on an Inbal Dror, if I had it. Or was thin. Or had a bloke.

Lollypop701 · 05/10/2020 21:45

Ffs stop dragging each other down ladies! I loved my big poofy dress, I looked bloody wonderful and felt amazing... whatever dress you get married in,.. white, red, full length, £50000 or £50; make sure you feel like if the most beautiful woman you can think of walked in you can say’ you’ve nothing on me’ ... because on that day no one else compares! My dress wasn’t madly expensive or cheap. It was however all mine!

Rosebel · 05/10/2020 21:53

My wedding dress was ivory and cost about £200. Obviously I'm never going to wear it again but I wanted to feel special on my wedding day.
A dress I could wear another time just wouldn't feel special enough.

VillageGreenPreservationSoc · 05/10/2020 21:57

I don't think there's a special place in hell for women who dislike each other's choice of wedding dress . . .
