To give up and buy an ugly coat?

I’ve been looking for a nice waterproof warm coat for months now... it doesn’t exist! I live rurally and do a long school run (walk) every day... AIBU to give up and just buy something practical?

Will happily look at any alternatives but I think I’ve seen everything!

Mountain warehouse - more practical than nice but you won’t mind when you are warm and dry Grin

Have you come across Didriksons? (Swedish company), they are waterproof/warm and not ugly, I think pretty nice actually- cons can be on the pricey side. Sea Salt, are highly practical and cosy but definitely on the functional side of style!

It's so annoying that women coats aren't waterproof, windproof and warm. Have some lovely wool coats and spring time trenches but need a proper one too.

I think I'm going to go for this Helly Hansen Insulated Trench:

Go for warmth and practicality over style, definitely!

I bought a Tommy Hilfiger one last year which is beautiful (imo), warm and waterproof. Worth a look.

DartmoorChef · 04/10/2020 18:19

Try GO outdoors. They have some nice stuff.

Aworldofmyown · 04/10/2020 18:22

I have a Seasalt one. It's amazing and picking up kids in the hideous weather on friday, i really didn't care that it isn't particularly stylish!

Mammylamb · 04/10/2020 18:24

I came on to recommend sea salt. I have a lovely coat that works all autumn and winter. And it looks nice going to the office and going for a walk in the woods

Joules do some nice waterproof ones. I’ve just bought the Navy Shoreside coat, looks well made and has good reviews.

FredaFox · 04/10/2020 18:32

I also have a sea salt coat, it’s a bit thick to wear right now so looking to get another thinner one from them
Not tendu coats but not hideous either

CarolVordermansBum · 04/10/2020 18:33

I recently bought a lovely warm, waterproof coat on ebay for £4! It is originally from very.com and I'm guessing wasnt cheap new. It was in Brilliant condition too, its worth having a look on there if you don't mind second hand. I've bought lovely coats in charity shops before too

BobbinThreadbare123 · 04/10/2020 18:35

I second Protected Species. Fully waterproof but they look like a proper coat, rather than hiking gear.

VenusClapTrap · 04/10/2020 18:37

I’ve just ordered a rain coat from Rain Sisters. They won’t be everyone’s taste, but they definitely aren’t frumpy!

My warmest waterproof winter coat is an old old version of this. https://www.landsend.co.uk/WomensSqualllStadiumCoat/pp/PP39702.html?cgid=11299&dwvarP397022_color=%20BLA

I bought a sailing jacket from Decathlon about 8 years ago, it is so warm and so cosy and dry that I look forward to getting it back out every year, Tribord is the brand

Foxandthepound · 04/10/2020 18:43

I've never seen that Helly Hansen one before - nice!

My ideal is an insulated Stuttenheim-style, but they don't seem to exist Sad

Seasalt are OK I agree but I have been holding out for something a bit more stylish - tempting though! I'd probably go for the Plant Hunter...

Function over fashion! I'd go for a cosy waterproof jacket over a pretty one although ideally I'd like both in one!

Ghostlyglow · 04/10/2020 18:46

I gave in 2 years ago (aged 52) and bought a practical coat. DP still thinks it's hilarious Hmm

purpleflowers7 · 04/10/2020 18:51

I bought this from Asda George for only £38. I've never bought anything from George apart from pyjamas but had a browse whilst doing my food shopping and I love it. It's so comfortable, warm and looks nice too. Can't go wrong.

To give up and buy an ugly coat?
honigbutter · 04/10/2020 19:02

I don't think anyone looks stylish when they're cold and wet, no matter how nice the coat, so go for practical in a colour that suits you.

Not sure if you'll consider them nice or hideous. Stocked in lots of places including John Lewis and Amazon.

I bought a Trrespass Waterproof Parka last year ( Clea) very nice , not bulky . Not over warm but windproof .
