Aibu to think I may end up with puppies?

Posting for traffic sorry - don't know much about this.

I have an 18 month old rescue bitch. Only got her 3 months ago - she wasn't spayed when I adopted her as they didn't know when her last season was. They told me to wait 3 months before doing it and she's booked in to have it done in 2 weeks time.

Tonight my mum was walking her and apparently a dog persistently tried to mount her. My mum thinks she managed to separate them in time but my bitch has showed no physical signs of being in season or she wouldn't be out at popular walking times. No other dogs have shown interest in her.

I've tried googling it but not had much luck. Aibu to think I could end up with puppies or is it just odd behaviour on the other dogs part? Really don't know much about unspayed dogs so advice welcome!

I think if she isn’t in season you should be okay!

nimbuscloud · 02/10/2020 21:48

Take her to the vet maybe? Just to be on the safe side

DundeeDiva · 02/10/2020 21:49

Thanks. Do dogs normally mount when the bitch (hate that word) isn't in season though?

Dogs will mount other dogs, human legs, cushions ....
Mascaramademehappy · 02/10/2020 21:54

They could try and mount when she isn’t in season but unlikely. Has she been bleeding, is her vulva swollen?

No nothing but I always worry there might be something I'm missing. My previous dogs were already spayed when I got them so I'm overthinking everything with this one!

They also mount to show dominance. Not just breeding
ErrolTheDragon · 02/10/2020 22:00

Better to overthink than underthink in this case!

Sunnydaysstillhere · 02/10/2020 22:00

Your dm would not have been able to split them up if they had mated properly...

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 02/10/2020 22:00

I've had dogs try to mount a bitch (don't hate that word, doesn't bother me at all, use it more of dogs than people!) when she's not in season.

If you think she might be in season, get the vet to check her over.

Thats not true. Dogs consistently try to mount for dominance
TheEC · 02/10/2020 22:04

Have you owned a dog before? Smile this is very common imo and just a display of dominance from the other dog. I had this every other week when I had my dog

SoddingWeddings · 02/10/2020 22:06

There is such a thing as the doggy morning after pill, and they can emergency spay.

yearinyearout · 02/10/2020 22:13

I’m sure she will be fine. Even if she was in season Dogs don’t mate that quickly, they have to lock together and it doesn’t sound like that happened.

I was wondering about that. I never had to get a pup spayed there. We always went through the quarantine process and pet passport. Meaning my pups were already spayed and neutered before arrival
DumplingsAndStew · 02/10/2020 22:16

Why did you need to know she'd had a season before spaying?

Mascaramademehappy · 02/10/2020 22:17

I didn’t word that well - of course dogs mount one another for many reasons but if she is not in standing heat and they didn’t tie you don’t have much to worry about but take her to the vet in the morning to be sure. She can have a jab to prevent pregnancy.

dudsville · 02/10/2020 22:18

My dogs have always been spayed (adult rescues) have never been mounted EXCEPT in the one odd (for me, not for dogs) occasion where a daughter displayed dominance over a mother.

Takemetothebar · 02/10/2020 22:18

It’s highly unlikely but I wouldn’t risk it. I’d ask for the mismate injection or an emergency spay.

Dogs can impregnate from a slip mating, though it’s less likely than a tied mating in which your mum couldn’t have separated them without injury.

Normally seasons are obvious BUT occasionally a rare season can be almost asymptomatic, or a bitch can take as early as day 4, and you may not have noticed yet.

VinylDetective · 02/10/2020 22:18

Some dogs will hump anything. If she’s not in season you’re safe.

Poppyisa · 02/10/2020 22:22

I think there may be a shot she can get at tHe vets, a day or two after an event. Maybe give them a call.

SurreyHillsGirl · 02/10/2020 22:30

Your dog won't be pregnant if she's not in season, and even when in season, she is only fertile for a few days in the middle of the cycle. Also if your dog is in season, intact male dogs would go crazy for her. Before my boy got neutered he went from being a really gorgeous chilled out dog to totally obsessed and intense around bitches in season!

My dog gets mounted quite a lot and she has been done. Boy dogs mount boy dogs, dogs not in season. It doesn't mean you will be a grandmother to puppies soon but maybe keep her on the lead until she is done.
Ilovelblue · 02/10/2020 22:37

I walk a friend's male labrador. Although he is neutered, he frequently tries to mount other dogs - it's a dominance thing for him.

Purpledaisychain · 02/10/2020 22:38

Some dogs are just dirty. My neighbour never got his male dog neutered and it would try to hump a anything. Other dogs, furniture, legs etc. If she isn't in season I wouldn't worry.
