to not believe Trump has Covid?

GeorgeDavidson · 02/10/2020 09:05

Well, MN, does he or doesn't he?

YANBU - no, he doesn't have it
YABU - yes he probably does, why would they lie?

Is this just some ploy to miss next debates and make him look 'tough' when he sails through it without getting ill?

Fair points @Mittens030869 and @SunbathingDragon...

It will be interesting to watch. Whatever the truth is, it's a shit show.

Keep1984fiction · 02/10/2020 11:52

Anyone watched the American version of house of cards on netflix.
Similar scenario in season 5 don't want to spoiler it for anyone watching.
Not covid though

LemonTT · 02/10/2020 11:54

I voted YABU because this is the type of thing Trump and his ilk like to encourage. He’s not interested in the truth and he wants you to believe it doesn’t exist in politics. He wants you to think everything is lies and it doesn’t matter. That’s how people like him get to power and stay in it.

Linzi2377 · 02/10/2020 12:09

I believe he has it..he’s travelled non stop the past few weeks..he’s not hiding away in a basement 🤷🏻‍♀️..he has probably a mild case of it and would have only knew as he was tested..I think half of us has had it!

HelloToMyKitty · 02/10/2020 12:09

DD11 came into the kitchen & said “ Good news - Trump’s got Covid! That’ll pay him back for all those people he didn’t help”. Out of the mouths of babes.....I wouldn’t wish it on anyone but maybe karma has paid a call here

This is a terrible thing for your daughter to say.

Whereas locking up other people's children because they are from south of the border is totally acceptable;e.

October surprise?

Mittens030869 · 02/10/2020 12:14

And Boris started with mild symptoms, we were told and self-isolated for a week, which was extended because he was still symptomatic. By the time he was admitted to hospital 10 days later, it had become obvious that he was more unwell than we were being told.

But it's impossible to predict. Prince Charles, who is in his 70s, had it very mildly (though he isn't overweight, so therefore less at risk).

It's certainly not at all unlikely that Trump has COVID, the only surprise is that he didn't catch it earlier.

I think it's age-appropriate application of what justice looks like. The primary concern is for 'all those people he didn't help'. I don't think it's a terrible thing to say at all.

DameFanny · 02/10/2020 12:19

@BlusteryShowers

I do believe it simply because I criticise others for the pervasive conspiracy theorising of the post truth era.

I'm no Trump supporter, but I don't think it's dignified to wish ill health on the head of state of our allies.

It's not dignified to lock children in cages, allow a pandemic to run rampant, encourage people to take bleach 'cures', or encourage the 'Proud Boys' to stomp anti-fascists.

Let alone the crime, treason and general grift he's committed in office.

Dignity left the White House when a fascist moved in. Whether America is still our ally or not, for the good of America I wish ill-health on its current, toxic Head.

SophocIestheFox · 02/10/2020 12:19

I think on the balance of probabilities, he does have it. It says something for the state that his regime has reduced us all to that so many people doubt it.

If he said the sky was blue, I’d step outside to check, but in this case I think his narcissistic fear of appearing weak by catching a virus he doesn’t believe in would be too strong for him to lie about it.

I could be wrong- if he was lying, then the ploy would be so that he could conquer it like the Übermensch he is.

He doesn’t want to avoid the debates, because in his head, he totally bossed them.

Nestme · 02/10/2020 12:21

I thought exactly the same thing when I saw the news today. Election ploy, I'm convinced. Trump will have had every experiment vaccine that has reached phase 3 testing. He will be being pumped full of plasma from covid survivors on a daily basis so his blood is constantly pumped full of covid specific antibodies (like Boris got a St Thomas, what saved him). This will have been going on for months. Still possible for him to get it but extremely unlikely imo. Can you imagine how many flunkies he has constantly cleaning and sanitising in front and behind him. It's a ploy I think to either make him look strong, make the US public think covid isn't likely to kill them (and hence that trump minimising it in the early days was no big deal) or that it's safe to come to rallies, or all three.

FamBae · 02/10/2020 12:21

My thoughts exactly, I literally told my self off for being so cynical Grin

Heffalooomia · 02/10/2020 12:21

Überblimp more like🤭

LaurieFairyCake · 02/10/2020 12:24

I think it's a ploy.

To miss work/debates and then just before voting come out and say he didn't feel well but he beat it and you can all beat it too...

BruceAndNosh · 02/10/2020 12:27

True or otherwise, it gives him a get out from the next debate and to a certain extent shields him from excessive criticism for awhile.
Remember how nicely Boris was treated while he was ill...

Lindy2 · 02/10/2020 12:28

I can understand the doubt but with the way he's been carrying on it really was a question of when not if, he'd catch it.

No masks, no real distancing (I doubt any distancing behind closed doors), attending big venues full of similar behaving people. I'm amazed it's taken this long to be honest.

It will be interesting to see how his illness develops. When Boris first tested positive we were told his symptoms were mild and he was continuing to work from home. He then obviously deteriorated badly after a week or so. Trump is pretty high risk based upon his age and weight and I don't actually think he's fully well anyway based upon the confused clap trap that he regularly comes out with.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 02/10/2020 12:29

Trump is obsessed with 'losers' and not being one.

He's trailing in the polls.

If it looks like he's going to be a 'loser', then something else has to step in and make it not his fault.

I don't think he's conspiracy'ing anything for the sake of Republican. He's far more likely to be going along with this as a personal-ego reason for not being a loser.

PerkingFaintly · 02/10/2020 12:29

I wonder what the general Covid conspiracy theorists will make of this announcement?

If Covid doesn't exist and is just a conspiracy to keep people at home, under government control, whatever whatever, then why has Trump announced that he has it, and that he will be self-isolating?

PerkingFaintly · 02/10/2020 12:30

True.
BruceAndNosh · 02/10/2020 12:30

With all the conspiracy theories he spouts, it's hardly surprising people don't believe him.
Doubtless QAnon will say he was deliberately infected by Deep State

Notanotherwooname · 02/10/2020 12:32

I don’t have any doubt he’s got it. I’d be surprised if he didn’t - he’s just been on a plane with Hope Hicks in close contact with no one wearing masks and she got. A positive test earlier in the week.

Bouledeneige · 02/10/2020 12:33

Hmmm. I fundamentally believe that Trump would lie about anything. But in this case I think he probably has got it. Because he relies on the votes of a huge number of red necks, conspiracy theorists and right wing anti-vaxxers who don't believe that Covid even exists so I think declaring himself covid positive hurts his electoral heartland. I don't think he'd risk that otherwise. But I'm doubtful about him blaming the advisor who only tested positive the day before him.

I do actually hope he has got it and it gives him a shock and a scare. His approach to Covid has been deplorably complacent. Of course he has ate advantage of private health and the best possible care compared wit many of his poor and deluded followers.

HelloToMyKitty · 02/10/2020 12:35

You act as if he can unilaterally change things. But executive orders can and have been struck down by courts, and that’s entirely correct because the President should not make laws, Congress should. It’s US law that children cannot be housed in adult detention centers with their parents. Congress could have legislated to change that law, but they did not. Here’s a good overview of the issues: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reno_v.Flores#Flores_Settlement_Agreement(FSA)

In other words? It’s complicated.

What’s not complicated is the hideous attitude of EternalOptimist child and she’s not even that embarrassed by it.

goose1964 · 02/10/2020 12:36

I'm on the fence, yes faking it would mean he could hide after the annihilation he got during the debs, but on the other hand he hates to show weakness.
