You're Not Like Other Girls (or women)

Why do men think this is a compliment? What's wrong with being like other females? If a man said this to me I would instantly think "red flag" but it's still being thrown out in Disney etc. How the f*ck are women supposed to progress when not being like other girls is condisered a compliment?

I know that it's supposed to be complimentary @1forAll74, but what is complimentary about it?Confused

Coyoacan · 02/10/2020 01:45

it does seem to signify someone with a generally low opinion of women

Indeed. It's a bit sad that a woman would take this as a compliment.

FourPlasticRings · 02/10/2020 01:50

@seayork2020

I presume I am not like other girls/ women because I am not offended by every single thing nor do I have to find dramas in everything that ever happens to me
As a sex we are conditioned not to make a fuss. Look at the suffragettes- made a massive drama out of a part of everyday life. But they weren't the majority, were they? To my mind, to be a woman who isn't like other women actually requires you to stand up for yourself and others rather than just meekly accepting the status quo.
NameChangeNugget · 02/10/2020 02:04

Not worth getting excited over

PyongyangKipperbang · 02/10/2020 02:04

If I am not a self proclaimed "cool girl" who simpers and smiles at every throw away comment a cock owner throws my way in an attempt to make me think I am speshul just for him, I can live with being like other women.

Defenbaker · 02/10/2020 02:40

Many years ago, when I was 21, my middle aged boss used that very line when trying to get into my knickers. He then added the words "You're in a different league to them... the way you dress, the way you speak..." and kept piling it on, hoping that I'd be flattered enough to succumb to him. I found it laughable, but kept things polite, as I wanted to keep my job. Luckily for me I found him utterly repulsive, but he was a serial adulterer, so perhaps his cheesy lines worked on some women.

BusyBB · 02/10/2020 02:56

Huh... I think this phase is also used by women "you're not like other men" and I dont think it should be seen as negative, just like "I've seen something special about you that makes me want to take notice of you". "I've never met anyone quite like you, while I cant quite put my finger on what makes you different".
I think phases like "you girls are all the same" or "women rolls eyes" are more offensive, but then again, that gets used about men too!

Goatinthegarden · 02/10/2020 03:02

Hmmm, never thought about it before but I do see your point. It can often mean, ‘other girls behaved in this fashion, I didn’t like that, and this is me warning you that I didn’t like that’.

I do think sometimes it is just said in an immature attempt to convey that they are more enamoured with you than they have been with previous partners.

On a slightly different note, DH often says I’m ‘quite different from any other person’ he’s met. It’s not always a compliment but more a quizzical observation about the way I bulldoze my way through life.

Mariola321 · 02/10/2020 03:10

Well, how can be 'the one' for him if same as all the rest? 🤷‍♀️ Some women complain about everything.

Mummyoflittledragon · 02/10/2020 03:10

I expect it is often used as a grooming tactic for the purpose of lowering boundaries, sexual, emotional and physical.

Mariola321 · 02/10/2020 03:12

I presume I am not like other girls/ women because I am not offended by every single thing nor do I have to find dramas in everything that ever happens to me.

Haha 😆👌

PyongyangKipperbang · 02/10/2020 03:19

Can't help wondering if those who are saying "Its a compliment, stop being offended by everything!" are the ones who have just realised that they fell for the oldest line in the book......

Mariola321 · 02/10/2020 03:21

Think some women angry not getting compliments.

Rebelwithallthecause · 02/10/2020 03:24

Would women be wrong in telling a man that ‘he’s not like many other men I know’?

newyearnoeu · 02/10/2020 03:32

@1forall74 um nobody has the wrong end of the stick, thanks. We all understand that it is "supposed" to be a compliment, the point is it's a compliment that both assumes traditional female stereotypes are negative, encourages division, and manages to insult every other woman apart from the individual being compl i mented at the same time. So it's actually a pretty terrible "compliment"

I mean technically "you're really clever....for a girl" or "you're actually quite attractive...for a black person" or " you look like youre much younger than you are from behind" are compliments but I'd find them pretty insulting!

Are we so desperate for male approval that we have to scrape the barrel of compliments that low?

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/10/2020 03:36

I play this a lot when DD is in the car so she doesn't fall for twunts who say things like that.

'Most girls' IME are a lot better than 'most boys'.

Mariola321 · 02/10/2020 03:36

Look much younger than from behind. 🤣🤣🤣

Mariola321 · 02/10/2020 03:38

Normally is look much older than from behind I would say. The nice bum but face like old.

PyongyangKipperbang · 02/10/2020 03:39

@Mariola321

Look much younger than from behind. 🤣🤣🤣
That particular comment is known, amongst brain dead arseholes, as a Kronenberg.

16 from the back, 64 from the front.

Some fucking compliment.

PyongyangKipperbang · 02/10/2020 03:40

Apologies, I misread.

The comment is "You look much younger from behind"

Mariola321 · 02/10/2020 03:40

You have wrong way I think Pyong. Is saying look better from front than back.

Mariola321 · 02/10/2020 03:40

Ah posted same time

PyongyangKipperbang · 02/10/2020 03:40
