Chin mask wearing

kerrymucklowe2020 · 01/10/2020 23:24

( happy for this to be moved to Covid thread if needed)
Seen so many people wearing masks on their chins! Which is bad enough, but ( not being sexist here by the way) but men have them on top of their beards!!!
Can someone explain this to me? How clean/effective is a mask once it's been on your chin? ( And then probably put back over your mouth and nose ) I find it revolting - what do others think?

I personally think mask wearing is a waste of time unless your in a hospital / care setting, BUT I do wear one to comply with the rules.

Don't really care what others do with their masks as long as they dispose of them properly and not litter with them.

Rinoachicken · 01/10/2020 23:31

YANBU. I work in healthcare and we have been specifically warned against doing this. Reason being, your neck is ‘dirty/exposed’, you pull your mask down and now the inside is in contact with your ‘dirty’ neck, you then pull it back up and the inside is now in contact with your mouth.

Chin mask wearing

I agree - i hate seeing people do that! Also the people who put the mask over their mouth but not their nose.

Is your chin or neck really dirtier than your mouth?!

winetime89 · 01/10/2020 23:39

I think usually people do it when there going in and out of shops. They pull it down when they've left the shop. Probably cleaner on your chin than going back in a handbag/ coat pocket until you enter the next shop.

Nochangeplease · 01/10/2020 23:39

I have to pull mine under my nose often to stop my glasses steaming up.

Frappuccinofan · 01/10/2020 23:43

I can’t get worked up over this frankly. The same germs you’re placing on your nose from your neck is surely the same contamination you would be exposed to if you weren’t wearing a mask at all, ie fuck all. Most masks the general public are using protects others from your germs, not you from theirs.

AlwaysLatte · 01/10/2020 23:43

It's better than putting your hands all over the front of it.You can just hook up the ear loops and do it quickly when you need to. I'm really not sure that wearing it on one part of your face, then another, is bad, since it's the same person.
That said when I've used mine I put it in a bag to wash later and use a new one.

Pipandmum · 01/10/2020 23:44

Your neck isn't dirty, just exposed. As the virus is airborne it may settle on exposed skin (your neck) whereas your mouth and nose has been covered.
However, mask wearing is more to protect others, right?

@Nochangeplease that's not a good idea as it renders wearing a mask pointless.

AlwaysLatte · 01/10/2020 23:46

Oh good point, I hadn't thought of that.

Frappuccinofan · 01/10/2020 23:49

Surely working in healthcare is different as you’re more likely to come into contact with unwell people, particularly COVID carriers. Also the masks healthcare staff use are surely intended to protect staff from viral transmission - unlike the masks the general public are advised to use which only protect others?

AlwaysLatte · 01/10/2020 23:49

I suppose the thinking is that your mouth and nose should have previously been protected by a mask while out and about so should be clean whereas your neck is not. It makes sense.

Frappuccinofan · 01/10/2020 23:51

@AlwaysLatte I disagree with your thinking as most masks the general public use do not protect them from COVID, isn’t this public knowledge by now? You wear a mask to help protect others by keeping your own germs to yourself

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 02/10/2020 00:10

YANBU - pet hate
It is getting better though - when mask wearing was first introduced on London Transport, every bus was full of ignorant prats with them draped over their chins (few exceptions, hanging from the ear).
I went on a bus last week, and it was much improved, most people wearing were wearing them properly.

So many people are either stupid or ignorant that I thing warning /advisory notices should state "Wear a face covering over your nose an mouth" rather than simply "wear a face covering".

And before the 'what about my exemption? I've stubbed my big toe' brigade start, if someone has a mask, but wears it on their neck, it's a fair assumption that they are not exempt.

IamaBluebird · 02/10/2020 01:00

I wish people would cut the straps on the disposable masks before they throw them away. I saw about 20 along the river where I live today. Such a danger to the wildlife.

Howlooseisyourgoose · 02/10/2020 02:09

It’s hard for some to continuously wear the mask. Maybe they need a break to breathe properly.

I’m exempt (and not due to a stubbed toe). I wear a mask until my breathing becomes so difficult that I need to remove it for a short period to recover, and then I put it back on. HTH

MrsMomoa · 02/10/2020 06:03

The other day I saw a guy get off the bus, pull down his face mask and push the snots back up his nose, with the palm of his hand! Confused
I didn't see him rush to get out his hand sanitizer.
Renders the whole thing pointless.

FippertyGibbett · 02/10/2020 06:48

I don’t care. I am putting my mask down and up because it’s easier.
If I hang it off one ear it might drop on the floor , then Ive got to put a dirty mask back on my face. No thanks, I’m doing it my way.

user1471500037 · 02/10/2020 07:12

Masks don’t do anything- I personally don’t wear them much but wearing on the chin is an acceptable halfway house to noncompliance

redcarbluecar · 02/10/2020 07:20

I’ve discovered, to my relief, that I don’t notice how others are wearing their masks. Wouldn’t wear mine on my chin though.

Burnthurst187 · 02/10/2020 07:23

I wear a mask in shops as we've been asked to, I do not like it but I do it. However, I was doing some dusting at home and thought why not put it on and I had to stop and drink some water

If dust can get through I'd bet Covid can

Swimminginroses · 02/10/2020 07:36

I do this.
I wear the stupid mask because I don’t want to get fined but as far as I am concerned the masks are a joke.
You’d need a proper, full face, world war type mask to keep out viruses, not a flimsy piece of fabric!
