Chin mask wearing

kerrymucklowe2020 · 01/10/2020 23:24

( happy for this to be moved to Covid thread if needed)
Seen so many people wearing masks on their chins! Which is bad enough, but ( not being sexist here by the way) but men have them on top of their beards!!!
Can someone explain this to me? How clean/effective is a mask once it's been on your chin? ( And then probably put back over your mouth and nose ) I find it revolting - what do others think?

to keep out viruses

It's not about keeping them out. It's about limiting droplets coming out of the mask wearer.

Swimminginroses · 02/10/2020 07:41

Still not convinced I’m afraid.
I’d like the see the evidence that covering your face with a flimsy bit of fabric stops germs getting out.
I do wear one but I fully think it’s nonsense.

AuditAngel · 02/10/2020 07:45

I want a mask that says “wear it over your nose, you dick” for all those incapable of wearing on3 properly!

Nanalisa60 · 02/10/2020 07:47

I wear a mask because I’m told I have to , I only wear them when I have to, I think that if we did a swap tests on most peoples masks then they would be full of greats, I really doubt people are use if clean masks every day never mind every wear.

I think it’s a complete waist of time, but I do it because I don’t want to break the law

Nanalisa60 · 02/10/2020 07:48

Germs not great!!

MrsMomoa · 02/10/2020 11:49

I've never washed mine.
Been wearing it since March.

Cassilis · 02/10/2020 13:19

@MrsMomoa

I've never washed mine. Been wearing it since March.
I’m not the cleanest person (wash bed sheets after 1 month etc) but even I think that’s disgusting.
iklboo · 02/10/2020 13:30

I wish people would cut the straps on the disposable masks before they throw them away.

I wish people would dispose of them properly instead of just chucking them on the floor, never mind just cutting the straps off.

pantsville · 02/10/2020 13:36

To be honest I think if you're in a position where you've got COVID hanging about on your chin, you're exposed to the disease and will probably get it, regardless of mask-wearing.

MayIJustAsk · 02/10/2020 16:46

I've just been in a queue and the lady serving had her mask under her nose. The man infront me had his mask under his nose. The man behind me had his mask under his nose. Have I missed something?!

IamaBluebird · 02/10/2020 17:30

Iklboo, people are putting them in the bins provided along the river. It doesn't take a seagull long to get hold of one though. So I reiterate I wish they would cut the straps.

Nanalisa60 · 02/10/2020 18:19

I wish they would just take them home and but them in there own bins!!

IamaBluebird · 02/10/2020 18:34

Even disposed of in their own bins they end up in landfill and become hazardous to our wildlife. It takes a second to snip the straps.

Londonmummy66 · 02/10/2020 18:54

What bugs me are the large number of people (mainly men) who get on the tube wearing their mask around their neck like a snood. Presumably they wore it correctly to get onto the platform - I imagine they think that as CV doesn't have an Oystercard it can't get through the barriers.....

REDLIPSTICKANDNAILS · 02/10/2020 18:57

I'd just mind your own business. If you get worked up by how other people are wearing their masks you will be annoyed forever.

mostwomencanbetter · 02/10/2020 21:21

@IamaBluebird do you carry scissors on a walk? Surely they are a weapon and you could be fined for that. Plus why wear a mask on a riverside walk anyway ?

Lazypuppy · 02/10/2020 21:30

I wear the same mask all dat. I just bung my mask in pocket or on the seat in the car then put back on for next shop. By end of day it definitely isn't clean and pretty sure its not doing anything

CherryCocktails · 02/10/2020 21:32

Masks are pretty pointless unless in a clinical setting. Most wear them because they are told they have to or to appease people who think wearing one makes a difference. Mines in my pocket or bag most of the time so not sterile but if me wearing it "properly" in Sainsbury's stops any potential abuse then so be it.

Heyahun · 02/10/2020 21:45

I used to think the same - but what are you meant to do if your out all day say like I was today - at several shops and a restaurant for lunch?

Where do you put the mask To keep it clean while you sit in the restaurant and eat (you need to now put them back on if you walk to the bathroom

Then I had to to take a 3 hour train - needed to drink water and have a snack - so I pushed the mask down on my chin several times on the journey - thought it was better than putting it on the trains table ??

Topseyt · 02/10/2020 21:47

Masks are shit. I wouldn't bother getting worked up over this.

If i am out in town I wear my mask over my nose and mouth each time I go into a shop. When I emerge I pull it down under my chin and then back up again when I go into the next place.

I don't give a shit whether or not that is the perfect way to wear it or not. It is my way and I will continue.

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 02/10/2020 21:48

YANBU. I ventured into the local shopping centre today for the first time since about February and it was full of men in beard masks with their noses hanging out.

dingit · 02/10/2020 21:50

Random fact. You can wash the disposable ones, I've had several go through my machine in peoples pockets Hmm

GervaseFen · 02/10/2020 21:55

It's amazing how badly the purpose of the masks has been communicated. I knew messaging had been muddled on lots of fronts but I'm still really surprised reading this how many people haven't understood.

imissthesouth · 02/10/2020 21:59

I've done that a few times @dingit
Works surprisingly well!
OP yanbu, same with the people who don't cover their nose😂🙄

HeIenaDove · 02/10/2020 22:31

@Heyahun Similar here. Waiting at a bus stop with a disposable mask on in the rain for a bus that never showed,

a. I dont drive. Do i put my umbrella up in the wind while im waiting and risk it breaking = mask will get wet if brolly does break.

Not bother and same result =mask will get wet rendering it useless.

Both on the 16th June and today i attempted to catch a bus that never showed up. In between those two dates i havent used the bus "service" Both times i was wearing a disposable mask. They arent fucking free. If they expect us to spunk money on these things to wear them on public transport they need to improve the latter. I cant wear the reusable ones.

Passsengers in chauffeur driven cars are exempt but its a lot easier to put one on just before getting into their fucking car. Unlike catching a bus in the rain and the wind, where you have to put it on before you leave home or struggle to put it on outside in the rain.

Ridiculous.
