And what do you do?

Is it even possible in today's climate?

I can imagine 000's of us are trying to do the same thing, however, perhaps there's something I haven't thought of... :)

Apologies, so many typo's!

SerenityNowwwww · 02/10/2020 08:40

I do now because it’s a small company anyway. It’s ok most of the time but I work much longer hours.

Gwynfluff · 02/10/2020 08:43

HE. Done my job as normal and got mates who do anything from insurance, to marketing, to surveying who work from home as well. The professional, managerial, admin sector is huge,. Got friends who've done their jobs from home for years.

SoloMummy · 02/10/2020 08:54

In my organisation, only 10% of the 500 has ever been office based with only 5 of those ft.

Wfh has always been available. Its about looking for it and requesting at interview.

nowlook · 02/10/2020 09:25

@Xenia

You've just reminded me to apply for my practising certificate renewal- earliest one I've ever done!

Also self-employed lawyer. I've been working from home for five years, save for client meetings.

Sinuhe · 02/10/2020 09:28

Yes, done it for a few years ... I worked as a translator.

MzHz · 02/10/2020 09:29

I just got a new job (through mumsnet jobs as it goes) All interviews over zoom etc, and started in September

WFH PT 😊

Couldn’t be happier

Vieve1325 · 02/10/2020 09:33

HR Manager. Could always work from home to a degree, but now I’m encouraged to be at home as much as possible.

I have to visit sites from time to time (especially at the minute with redundancies) due to the nature of the business I work in, but the majority of my meetings etc have gone to zoom / teams with no ill effect.

I do LIKE working in the office though, but I have to admit the flexibility is appreciated.

hellswelshy · 02/10/2020 09:43

Been WFH since April, Civil Servant, benefits sector. My job is completely feasible, with experience, to do remotely. I don't imagine what with the lack of space in our buildings that I will go back until next year, and even then maybe only a day or two a week.

Frazzled2207 · 02/10/2020 09:47

My husband has wfh for at least 13 years. Goes into the office a few times a year (not once this year though). He works for IBM (in a non-techy role) and they have always been very pro-wfh. Regardless of Covid, a large proportion of staff wfh a lot or most of the time. Good tech set ups. Saves a fortune on office leases etc as they have tens of thousands of people.
Not so good socially though.

LuluBellaBlue · 02/10/2020 09:47

There’s loads you can do from home:
PA
PR, Marketing, Advertising, Social Media manager
SEO
CRM administrator
Sales lead provider

All of these you can learn for free on the internet, and if you can prove your capable you can bring in good money too!

NastyBlouse · 02/10/2020 11:23

@cherrybakewellll It's not as glamorous as it sounds! I did a degree in creative writing and then spent 10 years as a copywriter in advertising agencies. Then went freelance and a ghost job for a technical textbook came up by chance through my professional network. I blagged it a bit tbh Blush but I got the job done and decent reviews. It's been mainly word-of-mouth from there, and building a decent network and sales funnel.

Half my work is rewriting business and how-to books and articles. The other half is writing novels (usually genre stuff; romance, erotica and westerns mainly) for Kindle authors who have good story ideas but can't/don't want to do the actual writing themselves. I get the odd celebrity thing but it's not that frequent (although it tends to be the best paid).

Glitteryone · 02/10/2020 12:21

I work in recruitment and I’ve worked from home for 5 years+

I’d hate to go back to commuting again.

Chuggington2 · 02/10/2020 12:26

100% since March but have often done the odd day at home, we are fully equipped to do so anyway - can pick up calls from desk phone via an app, VSL client (or whatever it’s called so we can get on the server) and MS
teams.

DH works for himself and when not with clients he’s at home, we have a dedicated home office.

Hingeandbracket · 02/10/2020 12:28

I do, have done for years.

IT.

pepsicolagirl · 02/10/2020 12:30

Yup and have done for years but I signed a piece of paper which says I can't talk about it.

Magicpaintbrush · 02/10/2020 12:50

I wfh, I'm an Illustrator. It doesn't pay that well to be honest but I love it and there is lots of flexibility, no issues with childcare because I wfh. I am enjoying a more chilled out month at the moment with a nice flow of small projects after an absolutely manic summer where I was working ridiculous hours for months - that's the thing, you can be working 16 hour days sometimes and still the pay is not great, but you have to make those deadlines. But on the other hand, I could be doing all manner of jobs I would hate but instead my work for the day might be drawing penguins and getting paid for it. The uncertainty of not knowing what work is around the corner or what your yearly wages will be is tough though tbh. If you want a steady and predictable wage then you wouldn't get that with illustrating, but for job satisfaction it's fab.

Feellikedancingyeah · 02/10/2020 13:00

Husband is University admissiona. WFH since March

Shiverywinterbottom · 02/10/2020 13:07

I’ve worked from home for the last 4 years and love it. I do a call centre based role now whereas proper to that I was in management.
WFH and taking a step back has been the best move I’ve made. I can work hours around the kids school and I can take them to their activities etc. It’s fab. Not having a commute has made such a massive difference to my life.

My DH has WFH since March and he is in a project manager type role. He works an hour away and has no desire to return to office working. It’s changed our lives x

MadameBlobby · 02/10/2020 13:09

Me, I am an employment lawyer for a consultancy

namechangefail2020 · 02/10/2020 13:09

My husband is a lawyer and does this and will not be going back to the office

lakeswimmer · 02/10/2020 13:20

I'm soon starting a new job (back office role for a charity) which will be working from home full-time initially. The interview was via zoom so haven't met any colleagues in RL yet. I'm hoping in the medium term to do a mix of WFH and office so there's a bit of variety and I'm better connected with the charity's work.

Gottalovesummer · 02/10/2020 13:22

I'm a childminder and have WFH for years. I had no childcare needs/costs of my own when my own children were young and as it's my own business I've been able to grow it the way I want.

Titsywoo · 02/10/2020 15:09

DH and I work from home now. I'm a part time bookkeeper (I just pop into the office every 2 weeks to grab invoice) and everything is online now. DH is the C.T.O for an American company and they have no office in London so he works here and spends most of his day in Zoom meetings. We also run a business from our house and a small commercial unit.

We converted the kids old playroom (they are now teens) into our office over lockdown (DH started his job in April). I think we will both WFH from now on.

TempestHayes · 02/10/2020 15:12

Software development.

Many in this industry have been WFH/remote working, 'digital nomad' for many years. Covid hasn't changed us much.
