And what do you do?

Is it even possible in today's climate?

I can imagine 000's of us are trying to do the same thing, however, perhaps there's something I haven't thought of... :)

DH works in IT and works from home full time. I believe the track and trace callers are remote based but they are only one year contracts.

Hopingtobeamum · 01/10/2020 21:17

I've always had some form of WFH but more so since covid. Am global head of risk in the online/retail industry. We're about to implement more WFH though, fingers crossed I keep my job though as it's uncertain at the moment.

ToffeePennie · 01/10/2020 21:19

Yes.
I am a private tutor, a domiciliary chiropodist and I make stuff to sell

KatieB55 · 01/10/2020 21:20

Full-time from home - also finance. Not looking like a return to office anytime soon.

RandomGirl · 01/10/2020 21:26

Yes, been full time at home since March - NHS Manager

BlueJava · 01/10/2020 21:39

IT Consultant full time at home.

ItWasTheBestOfTimes · 01/10/2020 21:39

I’m a software tester and did 3 days at home 2 days in office pre Covid, now full time wfh until next financial year but I can’t see us ever going back to the office.

Humbersider · 01/10/2020 21:40

Trainer in the health sector. Formerly field-based for last 6 years, now 100% home-based. Can't see me ever going back to face-to-face delivery: clients much prefer the convenience of Zoom (as do I).

Hairydilemma · 01/10/2020 21:41

Marketing - was 4 days a week at home and one in the office, fully from home since start of March and can’t see when I might start visiting the office again - certainly not this year.

speakout · 01/10/2020 21:41

Yes, I have worked from home for many years.

I am self employed.

GunsAndShips · 01/10/2020 21:46

I'm a family support worker. Only started wfh post furlough, before that I was working with vulnerable groups in a different setting. I do telephone support instead of face to face and groups are delivered on Zoom. School liaison and advocay is done on the phone too. Team stuff is done on, well, Teams!

I do one day a week in the office with one other colleague (usually 9 of us). I miss the support, tea, human touch tbh. But it looks like we might stay this way for a while yet. Maybe permanently.

Timeandtune · 01/10/2020 21:47

I am the CEO of an information and advice charity. Everyone works from home
And has done for a decade. Roles are v flexible around children, pets, elderly relatives, hobbies, location. We save a fortune in office costs. Pre COVID we would see clients face to face, speak at events etc and obviously have team meetings.
We have virtually no sickness absence ( fingers crossed) and no travel disruption .

GunsAndShips · 01/10/2020 21:47

Blimey I'm tired.

Livelovebehappy · 01/10/2020 21:55

I’m in banking. Huge head office based normally. 95% of us have been wfh full time since April, and wont be going back until March next year.

OrangeFluff · 01/10/2020 21:58

I’ve been working full time from home for the last 3.5 years. I work in insurance. Very used to using Teams, so have plenty of chat and fun with my colleagues, which keeps any feelings of isolation away. It’s great and I love the flexibility it gives me.

VestaTilley · 01/10/2020 21:59

Working from home (to answer a previous poster) is only doable in certain roles if they’re office based, so not if you need to be face to face in your job, eg dental nurse (sorry to the poster who said this!), surgeon or vet etc.

I have WFH since returning from mat leave in April. We now won’t need to return to our offices until March at the earliest. I doubt we’ll be made to go back full time to the office ever, maybe just a few days a week. It’s worked very well for us, and we’ve still been incredibly productive. I’m in financial services with a non-governmental agency in a comms role. As a DM of a toddler it makes my life far easier!

To be honest OP I was a bit surprised at your question - millions of us have WFH since just before lockdown, and have never needed to go back. In this day and age, if you work in an office with a laptop there should be no reason why you can’t WFH most of the time. It’s the norm now for all our friends and family, bar my DSis who is a nurse, and DBIL who is a teacher.

wheresmymojo · 01/10/2020 22:09

I'm a career change coach and all the coaching I do is online.

Most of my clients end up working from home full time, examples include:

  • Ethical beekeeping(!)
  • Freelance marketing & brand consultancy
  • Virtual assistant
  • Various craft businesses
  • Social media marketing manager (freelance)
  • Virtual HR assistant
  • Addiction recovery specialist (deals with clients online)
  • Nutritionist (works with private clients online)
  • Hypnotherapist (see clients at home in office in the garden and online)
jaimebravo · 01/10/2020 22:26

I work in IT and have been full time WFH since March and I love it. My work life balance is great now.
I don't ever want to have to go back to the office,

SimonJT · 02/10/2020 06:33

Yep, actuary, I was in the office before, but its fairly common to wfh as an actuary. My contract has now been changed and I will wfh apart from one half day per month, but if travel is too much that can be done over zoom. I only live a forty minute walk from work, so I don’t think I can use the travel excuse!

MaverickDanger · 02/10/2020 06:45

Strategic HR type role for a construction firm.

I used to wfh 80% of the time pre Covid, now we’ve been told we can permanently wfh if we want to.

My team are all over the country anyway so meetings were always remote. Everyone in the company has been wfh during Covid & most will continue to. These are specialisms from business support (Finance, Recruitment, HR etc) through to technical construction specialisms.

I can imagine in a lot of roles for most big companies now, this will become the model. We are working with a lot of companies on their workplace model so they can understand how to reduce cost, and most are saying they expect 60% of their workforce minimum to wfh indefinitely.

Back2Black · 02/10/2020 06:50

WFH full time since March & for the foreseeable - Finance.

cherrybakewellll · 02/10/2020 06:53

@NastyBlouse you literally have my dream job, I'm so jealous! How did you get into it?

Xenia · 02/10/2020 08:13

I should have added am self employed (sole trader) (as well as lawyer and worked from home for myself since 1994 other than since then when out at meetings, work business travel in Uk and abroad etc)

HellequineViriato · 02/10/2020 08:25

Self-employed and home-based here as a graphic designer, illustrator and copywriter. Have built up the business over the last 7 years and wouldn't actually want to go back. Planning a move abroad which will see me stay as I am and carry on doing what I do. I do see clients sometimes for meetings but beyond that, all work is done remotely. The shape of work is changing. My sister who previously wasn't remote working is now working from home on a permanent basis as are most of her team and she doesn't intend to go back, she now only goes into the office for meetings. I think for many people it will be the norm. My husband, however, is still location-based as he does warehouse work so he can't really bring a forklift home!

WizzyWanta · 02/10/2020 08:38

Family practitioner for an addiction service.
Used to be a client facing role, however since covid19, all sessions are via telephone, teams or zoom.
It has turned out to be an effective way of working, better engagement from clients as they no longer have to travel across the city to see me, and because I am not travelling anywhere either, I can fit more sessions in each working day.
As a consequence, I am not sure my job will have return to the old way of working which is a shame.
Having said that, so don't miss my commute when the weather is at is today!
