Rained all afternoon here and ds came out of school soaking and shivering

YANBU. I went for a run in the rain this morning and wore my waterproof running jacket.

This country's obsession with making children feel miserable in school is weird in my opinion.

You just need to buy more appropriate outdoor pe clothes. A light weight jacket and maybe thermals on pe day.

I would honestly be livid if that were my child. If a child were at home and were forced to play outside in the rain woth no coat, someone would call social services.

There's also the fact he could catch a cold with asore throat, next thing you know, he's got symptoms of coronavirus amd has to self isolate. Absolutely ridiculous. I would definitely complain.

I'd raise it in non-angry tones with school, that's not really wise or necessary.

A light waterproof jacket, yes.

A heavy, restrictive long coat, no.

No pe jumpers...he has to go to school wearing his pe kit atm due to covid so did send him in wearing a zip up hoodie

A hoodie won’t keep him dry though-at leastjid he’s only outside for prob max 40 minutes running around he’s unlikely to be that cold. If his hoodie got wet, too, he’d have nothing dry to put on afterwards.

Social services wouldn't even entertain this. Child who gets wet is not a case for social services.

The hoodie was more for warmth tbh...I didn't really think of rain as assumed they would put their coats on...pe teacher told them to put their jumpers/hoodies on for pe...so they didn't have anything dry to put on after hence the soaking and shivering

I was thinking about this earlier. My kids do a sports club on a Sunday. They used to do it indoors but now it needs to be outside. I was busy being enraged about it but then I thought - hang on, I used to do the same sport weekly and never did it indoors. What did we used to do? I don’t remember wearing a coat for PE in the 70s? Not being a dick - just genuinely can’t remember.

But in the 70's we changed into a pe kit and our clothes later were dry
Because of covid all has to be outside and have to go in their kits at most schools
Spoke to my da who is secondary as they have pe today he did in rain but was last lesson , he said he doesn't know what will happen if morning session and raining
Although he is older i don't want him sat in wet clothes all day
He does outdoor sports where he gets soaking all the time but obviously changes and showers etc after

I run in a t-shirt in all weathers. However the thought of sitting in those clothes after is repulsive. It's not the exercise, it's the aftermath.

Thats terrible OP. I think that is completely unreasonable for the school to expect children to sit in wet clothes all day. Expect an onslaught of coughs, colds and Covid tests...

But his pe kit isn't waterproof and atm he has to wear it all day so then is in wet clothes for the rest of the afternoon

I don't necessarily expect he should have worn his coat, but provision should have been made for not sitting round in wet clothes all afternoon (e.g. one of move PE to last thing, wear coats, allow a change of clothes after, move PE indoors).

I would politely question the school. Ours have asked us to send a light weight rain mac for pe days.

However, I would be livid if they stopped dd wearing it. She is asthmatic and on a type of chemotherapy to treat allergies so even a common cold knocks her for 6.

How much rain are we talking about? Was he actually soaked through or just a bit damp?

I presume they're making the kids exercise outside in such weather due to COVID and not just because they're sadistic monsters who gravitated towards a particular subject?? Definitely raise it with the school, especially if he's only 9 and came home shivering, poor kid.

One of the many reasons I loathed our PE teachers is that they always had nice big puffa jackets to keep them snug in the depths of winter; if we were lucky, we were allowed to wear a jumper. Girls were not allowed to wear jogging bottoms or tracksuit trousers unless they had a religious reason backed up with a regular note from their parents. All in the north east of England, not renowned for its balmy temperatures and dry climate.

By the time I left school I think enough parents had complained that we were allowed to wear light cagoules for cross country running (well, street, it was an urban school) and tracksuit bottoms. So definitely have a word - think of all the kids whose parents might not be in a position to challenge the status quo.
