Aibu to expect my 9 year old to be allowed to wear his coat for pe when the school insist on outdoor pe even tho it's cold and raining???

Rained all afternoon here and ds came out of school soaking and shivering

dementedpixie · 30/09/2020 21:08

It rained here today too and ds didn't get PE outdoors for this reason. While changing rooms are not used it would be very unfair to send them out and then for them to sit in wet clothes for the rest of the day

dementedpixie · 30/09/2020 21:10

P.s. he didn't get indoor PE either as they sat indoors doing nothing instead

Leaannb · 30/09/2020 21:10

@CherryPavlova

Why would he wear a coat for PE? The idea is to run around to use energy and keep warm. He’ll not come to any harm; skin is waterproof.
Ummm...You would be cold and shivering also if you had to sit in wet clothes for the remainder of the day
kaleishorrid · 30/09/2020 21:10

@WorksTheDinerAllDay

YANBU. I went for a run in the rain this morning and wore my waterproof running jacket.

This country's obsession with making children feel miserable in school is weird in my opinion.

I agree - there seems to be an idea of "never did me any harm" yes but I bet you were miserable. I remember doing cross country in the snow - PE at school put me off exercise for life!
ChristmasCarcass · 30/09/2020 21:10

Ha, I did a sit-down protest when I was eight because the PE teacher wouldn't let me put a cardigan on. I was in shorts and a tshirt, in the snow, and she was shouting instructions to us out of the staffroom fucking window because it was so cold. And of course had her coat, gloves and a mug of coffee when she came outside to see why I had stopped playing netball.

I got a letter home, but DM backed me up. Still outraged by the complete double standards - if it is too cold for the teachers to even be outside, it is cold enough to deviate from the PE uniform regs Grin

TheMandalorian · 30/09/2020 21:13

No but you use up energy and resources trying to get warm which your body could be using to fight off an infection. Pneumonia for instance.
I would be questioning the school on this one. Particularly if they are having windows open all day too.

CherryPavlova · 30/09/2020 21:13

In fairness, the teachers aren’t running around usually, unless they’re refereeing a match.
Did he not change into PE kit?

dementedpixie · 30/09/2020 21:14

No, they have to go to school in PE kit and wear it all day. Changing rooms are not in use

Purpledaisychain · 30/09/2020 21:16

@CherryPavlova

The main point is that it was raining and he had to spend the rest of the day in wet clothes. So he should have been able to wear a rain coat or the school should have spent the pe session indoors.

Italiangreyhound · 30/09/2020 21:16

I'd be furious if my child was cold and shivering all day in the same wet clothes. I would speak to school nicely to ask what the plans are for all day PE clothes and out door PE now the weather is turning colder.

If the plans are your child gets cold and wet on PE days, I'd complain.

Thanks
Purpledaisychain · 30/09/2020 21:17

@CherryPavlova

And most schools aren't letting kids get changed at school at the minute. Normally they are making them wear their pe kits all day on the days they have it.

Italiangreyhound · 30/09/2020 21:17

Sadly, I think school played a major part in my not liking PE and not taking up any sports once I got the choice. It's shit.

lizbetlizbet · 30/09/2020 21:18

@Grobagsforever getting cold and wet weakens the body, exposure to cold adversely impacts the body's immune system.

DisappearingGirl · 30/09/2020 21:20

That's shit. My kids' school are also asking them to wear PE kit (or joggers/t-shirt) all day on PE days. But as it was raining today they didn't do PE.

Mummyoflittledragon · 30/09/2020 21:20

I’d be contacting the school about this and asking for the new current procedure to keep the children warm. Not on at all. My dd is at secondary. They’re going in their kit and have to take a change of clothes in case they get wet or dirty. If this happens last lesson, the children can put their coat on for warmth and change at home. But not if earlier.

ImFree2doasiwant · 30/09/2020 21:21

Ds1 had PE Tuesday. He also has to go to school on his PE kit and wear it all day. No changes of clothes allowed.

It was chucking it down here until about 2.30pm. They did PE indoors.

user1592512579 · 30/09/2020 21:21

I wouldn't expect them to wear a coat for PE. If they were not going to be able to change out of the wet clothes they should have done the PE indoors.

dementedpixie · 30/09/2020 21:21

www.google.com/amp/s/www.edinburghlive.co.uk/news/edinburgh-news/east-lothian-headteacher-sorry-forcing-18793803.amp this was a recent story about a school making them eat outdoors in torrential rain as well as do PE. They've now made alternative arrangements!

Chewbecca · 30/09/2020 21:22

YABU to suggest a coat during PE. They’re supposed to be getting hot and sweaty, running round, no coat is needed. I used to play hockey in all weathers, no one wore a coat.

However YANBU to expect to change out of those wet clothes on returning indoors, they need to change after PE.

dementedpixie · 30/09/2020 21:23

Ours aren't having indoor PE so if they can't go outdoors they sit about indoors instead

Missanneshirley · 30/09/2020 21:23

Did he have anything waterproof with him? Did he ask to wear it?
We are doing all PE outside, kids not changing. The expectation is that they are suitably dressed for outside gym, then can take off waterproof/wet layers when back in.
Although of course halfway through most of them invariably get too hot and throw their jackets off anyway!

ImFree2doasiwant · 30/09/2020 21:25

@Chewbecca that's the point though, they are not allowed to change, due to Covid . They go to school in pe clothes and wear them all day.

romeolovedjulliet · 30/09/2020 21:26

why are kids doing p.e if the rain is that bad ? sounds pretty stupid to me especially as they can't get changed.

Feelingconfused2020 · 30/09/2020 21:27

Yep, I agree it's not ok. It sounds like they've not thought it through. I hope they review after today and change the plan somehow. I would feedback that your son was freezing and uncomfortable all afternoon and you don't think it's acceptable. It's likely you won't be the only one.

BrummyMum1 · 30/09/2020 21:32

My DC are wearing PE kit every day but are allowed to change into a spare set if wet. Everyone’s trying to be hygienic at the moment. Surely sitting around in wet/sweaty PE kit all day is the total opposite of hygienic.
