Do you make an effort? What do you wear?

I would feel silly wearing a full on work dress on Zoom (sad that they have hung in my wardrobe for 6 months!) but I do like to make sure I’m wearing a nice top, jumper, jewellery etc. and always have a bit of make up on (not as much as I used to in the office!)

Looking for some ideas of other outfits that are both comfy but will look nice on video!

I know some people might not care but I’m in a senior corporate role and used to pride myself on always being well groomed, fresh and put together in the office - I can feel myself slipping into just lazy clothes as we go into winter! I find just putting perfume on makes such a different to how I feel!

@ShaunaTheSheep

Oh ok. In that case I have teams calls with the royal household Wink
that would explain the user name
justsayso · 29/09/2020 11:07

Sometimes PJs, sometimes hoodies. Barely wearing any make up, it's so liberating. Hair is usually scraped back.
If on video call, throw a plain jumper on and put my specs on - I feel I look more 'officey' then.
Recently rediscovered an absolutely vile charity shop jumper which I rarely wore to work despite how gleefully happy it made me, now I wear it all the time, I'll post a pic so you can revel in the horror of it

GoodMorningLondon · 29/09/2020 11:08

@SantaClaritaDiet

because it shows what exactly if you spend time thinking about what you look like?!

that you are not a boring kill-joy with low self-estime? Just a guess Smile

Are you saying making yourself look nice means you have low self esteem or the opposite?

Oh it's so vile. I love it, a real talking point.

AnnaBegins · 29/09/2020 11:10

I'm with you OP. I dress in normal work wear (or slightly dressed down e.g. leggings not tights) as it puts me in the right frame of mind to work. Today I have on a jersey wrap dress, leggings, boots, cardigan, plus a warm jumper which I take off for video calls. Comfy but still workwear and makes me feel like I've gone out to work. Have to say I've stopped bothering with makeup as laptop camera quality isn't great!

TrulyOutrageousJem · 29/09/2020 11:12

Now I’m back in the office I’m a little more casual on my wfh days but throughout summer I always made an effort.

Getting ready for work is a part of my routine that mentally prepared me for the day ahead. I also love clothes and really missed them. When I’m off duty and not working I get changed into my joggers and it helps me switch off.

I probably sound mental but it makes me feel like I still have boundaries.

Redred2429 · 29/09/2020 11:16

Loung wear I have collected a full wardrobe of comfortable clothes

BikeTyson · 29/09/2020 11:20

I’m doing the nursery run which involves public transport at the start and end of each working day so I do need (or feel the need) to put a bit of makeup on and some clothes suitable for leaving the house. Most days it’s jeans/jeggings and a T-shirt or jumper of some kind. A lot less smart than I used to wear to work, but smarter than if I was just lazing about the house.

TownHallDesigner · 29/09/2020 11:21

I’m on constant video calls.

My usual WFH attire is-
Jeans
Smart jumper or top
No jewellery
Make-up. More than I wear in the office because I need to add more definition for video calls or else I look very washed out.
Slippers
Heated blanket on my lap because I’m working from the world’s coldest living room.

Have to have my hair freshly washed and styled or I just feel grim for the day.

I can’t wear pj bottoms for some reason. Feel weird about it.

I basically have a wardrobe that consists of ‘anything that goes with black leggings’. I wear them every day mostly - save for the days when it was warm and I wore dresses.

I have loads of smart-ish t shirts, usually plain or striped which I wear. I have a granny cardi to hand for when I get chilly. I always wear make up though - I have loads of video calls and on the days I didn’t, everybody asked me if I was feeling ok Blush

Oh I also put perfume on but that’s just for me!

SantaClaritaDiet · 29/09/2020 11:24

I am saying there's absolutely nothing wrong in looking good, and I find it very amusing that some posters are trying to derail the thread pretending that it's incompatible with a senior role.

It's a valid question, I really don't understand why there's always one or 2 who have to pop with nasty comments attacking a non-offensive thread.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 29/09/2020 11:25

smart top, lippy and yoga pants

Greentulips1 · 29/09/2020 11:32

I wfh and have constant video calls!

I wear a nice top but leggings and slippers on the bottom half.

I do make an effort every day though to do my hair and make up. Although I have swapped my normal work make up (full foundation) to a BB cream with softer coverage.

Also have to admit.... I very rarely wear a bra these days! Blush I would NEVER go to the office without a bra on... but on webcam, because I am small chested, nobody would ever know I'm not wearing one!

Perks of home working : booby freedom!! GrinGrin it's fab!!

ShaunaTheSheep · 29/09/2020 11:32

@justsayso you have given me an amusing suggestion for a dress code our Christmas Teams event Xmas Smile

pippistrelle · 29/09/2020 11:33

My office is fairly casual so I'm pretty much wearing the same things I usually would. But I'm not really a fan of lounge wear for me. Today, jeans, nice black jumper, jewellery (just because I like it), make-up (again, because I like it).

Just added a scarf that was slung over the back of the nearest chair because I'm cold.

I have been investing in some warmer jumpers though because home is colder than work, during the day anyway. Thermals next.

Nobody else cares what I wear.

ShaunaTheSheep · 29/09/2020 11:35

I find people’s zoom/team backgrounds are of more interest than what they are wearing.

LadyCatStark · 29/09/2020 11:35

I was due a new laptop on the first day of lockdown and my current laptop conveniently doesn’t have a camera, so I’m exempt from being on screen 😂 I tend to wear sports leggings and an oversized hoody every single day (different ones!). When the weather was nice I wore shorts and a T-shirt or hoody. I like to do light yoga at lunch time to stop myself from going insane and I don’t want to have to get changed so this suits me.

Thirtyrock39 · 29/09/2020 11:36

Cord skirt or cord trousers (comfy but smarter than joggers or leggings) and nice shirt and cardy so look smart for virtual meetings
I find if I just wear normal home clothes I can't switch off when I've finished work and also struggle to feel in the mood for work if I'm my scruffs

NW2SW · 29/09/2020 11:37

Elasticated Grin

Havaiana · 29/09/2020 11:45

I switch in and out of clothes. So will be loungewear no bra at 9am and then will jump into a dress or nice top for a 10am video call, and then back into loungewear at 11am if no call. Then back into the dress for next call.

It’s not that much of a faff, takes me 30 seconds and I have sensory issues so can’t tolerate a bra and constructive clothes for too long at home.

Havaiana · 29/09/2020 11:45

*constrictive

mindutopia · 29/09/2020 11:45

Tops and jeans and cardigans/scarf when it's cool. To be fair, that's pretty much what I wear to the office too. If I have a meeting and I am in the office, I would possibly wear black jeans.

CauliflowerBalti · 29/09/2020 11:46

Nice top with jewellery (earrings and a nice necklace), mascara, perfume. I have a few pairs of (to me) stylish trousers with elasticated waists that tick the comfort AND not being a slob box. I'm happy. I'm very comfortable, I look and feel like me.

Redwrecker · 29/09/2020 11:47

I went through a phase of really slobby clothes, no bra, looking like I just woke up. I felt really unproductive and panicked if someone knocked the door or wanted a video call without warning.

I’ve now started getting dressed into something I would at least pop to the shop in, leggings and tunic or a casual dress everyday. Generally don’t wear makeup, but make sure I’ve washed first thing rather than mid morning 😳. Tie my hair back etc. I feel better for it.
