To ask about your WFH wardrobe?

Do you make an effort? What do you wear?

I would feel silly wearing a full on work dress on Zoom (sad that they have hung in my wardrobe for 6 months!) but I do like to make sure I’m wearing a nice top, jumper, jewellery etc. and always have a bit of make up on (not as much as I used to in the office!)

Looking for some ideas of other outfits that are both comfy but will look nice on video!

I know some people might not care but I’m in a senior corporate role and used to pride myself on always being well groomed, fresh and put together in the office - I can feel myself slipping into just lazy clothes as we go into winter! I find just putting perfume on makes such a different to how I feel!

Lots depends on what kind of style and office dress culture you had before working from home. I was always smart casual in the office (bog standard black trousers, floaty top, cardigan, pumps), but rarely wore make up or did much with my hair other than clean and tied back. I always wore earrings though.

For working from home, I'm normally very casual, but if I've got a call with senior leaders or a more formal external stakeholder I'll pop a blouse on with either my leggings or jeans on below as normal. I may put a necklace on as more visible on screen. Don't bother with hair styling and make up as the picture quality isn't amazing or I'm a small thumbnail picture in bigger meetings, so I genuinely don't think it is obvious either way.

I wouldn't worry too much, most people are more casual now I find.

and used to pride myself on always being well groomed, fresh and put together in the office I think you had skewed priorities. You could use this time to revaluate.

JuiceyBetty · 29/09/2020 09:51

I haven’t worn perfume since lockdown started

VioletCharlotte · 29/09/2020 10:02

Senior role. I live in leggings and jumpers/ T-shirt's. I make sure my hair looks reasonable if I have to be on camera and a bit of make up (just for my benefit really as I can't beat the sight of myself on camera otherwise!)

BalconiWaferAddict · 29/09/2020 10:02

Winter wear is leggings, slippers, a cami and a big cosy jumper. Bit of concealer, blush and mascara otherwise I look dead and hair in a mum bun or ponytail. I keep a smartish floaty shirt on the back of my chair in case of a client call.

Tbf I was in a casual office so this was what I wore Day to day anyway.

SantaClaritaDiet · 29/09/2020 10:12

I can't stand being in pjs all day and even if I don't drop the kids to school, I make an effort to go for a jog every day I WFH and go out of the house at some point even if it's just to the gym. Such a shame not to make the most of not commuting!

It's sports gear until I have my shower.

I wear comfy smart casual clothes - basically no need to to change all day. I started to wear a lot of dresses during the lockdown: top is ok for videos and they are so comfy. I am wearing a patterned smock dress right now. It's nowhere near smart enough for the office but perfect for home.

Heating is on, but when I am cold I put my Uggs on Grin

Lockdownhairdontcare · 29/09/2020 10:16

Jersey wide leg trousers, fitted plain jumper, necklace, earrings, fluffy socks and hair tidy, minimal make up. Director.

notforonesecond · 29/09/2020 10:31

I don’t have any video calls so I just wear whatever. Jeggings and a jumper most days so I look half decent but am comfy. I’m civil service though so it’s not much different to the office as we had no dress code.

I do like to change out of my pjs though or I feel all grubby and grim.

EsterOdesavitch · 29/09/2020 10:32

Jeggings and slippers (my feet get cold) - smart casual top for internal calls, smarter shirt or top for client calls, hair down and smooth/glossy. No make-up, can't be arsed and I don't look any better on camera anyway.

I have massive lockdown eyebrows but they are largely hidden by my specs...

ShaunaTheSheep · 29/09/2020 10:37

Lol at some of you telling us how important you are Smile

Sparklesocks · 29/09/2020 10:39

I tend to wear a decent looking top (crisp T-shirt, long sleeved cotton tops, relatively smart jumper etc) for my video calls but very much wear joggers and leggings on my bottom half. I’m much comfier in those at home than jeans.

Might put a lick of make up on but nowhere near as much as I used to for the office. I have the zoom ‘touch up my appearance’ box ticked which helps Wink

Derelictwreck · 29/09/2020 10:39

I have constant video calls OP. I wear leggings/PJs on the bottom then nice jumpers etc on the top. Hair done and earrings in, but no make-up or perfume as my skin is better without it and it's expensive to waste!

I often have a warmer hoodie or something on which I just pull off for meetings, or take my hair down and give it a shake before I go on camera. But I can always be presentable within 1min in case.

Seraphinite · 29/09/2020 10:40

OP I’m similar to you and need to be on video regularly, either with internal colleagues or with clients. I generally wear fine merino joggers (warm, comfortable and unseen) with a decent jumper or top. Largish (ie visible) earrings and bright lipstick make a big difference on camera when you need/want to look a bit polished and I tend to wear bright colours which make me feel good.

I’m just coming out of winter and warmth has been a priority so I bought some decent knitwear that looks smart right at the start of lockdown (jumper/cardi/poncho).
As it warms up I’ll be going for lightweight tops to wear with light drawstring trousers (comfort all the way) or summer dresses. Or I have a few kimono style tops that can go over T-shirts that will work.
For me it’s about being comfortable but still professional because that’s important for the work I do.

AriettyHomily · 29/09/2020 10:43

Depends what my day looks like. If I'm on a team call I can turn it on straight from a gym class. If it's v senior stakeholders I'm not totally corporate but appropriate ie now too low cut, off the shoulder, spaghetti straps etc same as in the office.

Today I'm wearing a white sweater and jeans but interaction will be direct reports only.

MyNameForToday1980 · 29/09/2020 10:46

@IntermittentParps I kinda just pull them over the harem pants, I tell myself I look like some sort of luxe California Yoga Mum (Mom), but really I look like a portly 40-something wearing jodhpurs (still love them though).

ScrapThatThen · 29/09/2020 10:47

I love a poncho (soft drapey ones) and they are great for wfh keeping warm and throwing over casual clothes.

I'm starting a new job wfh soon and want to look smarter but realising I will look odd wearing any of my large selection of jackets wfh, so watching with interest.

Topseyt · 29/09/2020 10:47

Jeans and t-shirt with a cardigan or jumper as needed.

IntermittentParps · 29/09/2020 10:51

Ah, OK, thanks MyName Grin

Lol at some of you telling us how important you are TBF I think people are saying it to indicate whether they dress up because they're expected to, being senior, or whether the fact that they're senior doesn't stop them wearing PJs.

GoodMorningLondon · 29/09/2020 10:54

What’s wrong with that? It gave me confidence and I felt good about myself. Obviously it wasn’t the only thing important in my job but I think how you carry yourself makes a difference in some sectors.

when you spend more than 40 hours a week in the office, you clearly need to step back and revaluate WHY you don't care about your appearance and feeling good about it. It's not healthy to feel low all the time Wink

Also I think it does make a difference if you’re a senior manager and clearly just rolled out of bed with unwashed hair and a stained sweatshirt on a video call when you’re supposed to be leading/inspiring others - maybe that’s just me. Grin

Oh ok.
In that case I have teams calls with the royal household Wink

GoodMorningLondon · 29/09/2020 10:57

@SantaClaritaDiet. When things were really tough in the office sometimes wearing a nice new work dress or putting on my heels gave me a much needed boost! I don’t care if that’s shallow!

because it shows what exactly if you spend time thinking about what you look like?!

that you are not a boring kill-joy with low self-estime? Just a guess Smile
