Masks wearing outside ?

jezmay · 28/09/2020 17:32

I keep seeing people wearing masks outside

Why are people walking around a big open park or field or just the streets ( they are on their own so not walking close contact with others ) wearing a mask?

Been seeing it loads lately . Loads of mask wearing outside , will this become mandatory?

Because it makes them feel comfier? Not doing any harm

Sparklesocks · 28/09/2020 17:35

I wear one while constantly on the high street as it’s easier to just keep it on when I pop into different shops rather than keep taking it on/off etc.

I don’t wear it in parks or generally walking about, but I suppose some may feel more comfortable doing that.

Laiste · 28/09/2020 17:35

I've noticed this too. I don't know their reasons. It's mostly older people IME. 50s plus. Perhaps they just want to be extra careful or want to be seen being extra careful?

The only time i'm in a mask outside is if i'm struggling too much with the trolly when i come out of the supermarket to whip it off immediately! When i do i find i gulp the fresh air as if i've been underwater!

CamelotSweetheart · 28/09/2020 17:37

I wear mine when I'm outside in a shopping street because there are people everywhere and it's easier than putting on in and taking it off. And then sometimes I leave it on til I get home because I can't be bothered to take it off when I'm walking back.
I wouldn't wear one On a country walk though, or a street where there aren't many pedestrians.

Harrysmum2020 · 28/09/2020 17:37

Definitely not just older people walked past a university today and loads of students walking down the street alone in masks

Somethingsnappy · 28/09/2020 17:38

I find it a bit pointless too, but I do understand. It probably helps people to feel like they have a little control in the present time where things feels beyond our control.

ChaBishkoot · 28/09/2020 17:40

Well where I live it’s compulsory (in New England in the US). And the logic is that it prevents the constant taking on and off masks. And as a rule it’s easy to follow. You step out, you mask up. It’s fairly easy.

ChaBishkoot · 28/09/2020 17:41

A friend was saying people were standing at a cramped bus stop in London, no social distancing and no masks. Bus pulls up, everyone gets their masks out and puts them on and sits quite far apart on the bus. They get off on a relatively busy high street and take it off again.

StrawberrySquash · 28/09/2020 17:41

I do it between shops to avoid touching it. Sometimes I wear it home as well in an effort to get used to wearing it for longer periods. It's also not as annoying now that it's colder.

Wankerchief · 28/09/2020 17:45

I wear mine outside. Its because otherwise i would be taking it off/on/off/on repeat x56
Easier to keep it on then take it off at home.

And looking at the countries that Make you wear them wherever regardless and doing better than us (Low bar admittedly) perhaps we all should get over ourselves and wear them everywhere without the muzzle rants and hand wringing.

BrokenBrit · 28/09/2020 17:46

@ChaBishkoot does that include in rural areas like in the countryside on dog walks etc?
I believe in wearing them in indoor spaces around others and if I’m walking in a busy town I would, but I would hate to be made to wear one as I soon as I left my house as a lot of time outdoors is spent walking and rarely see people.

Frappuccinofan · 28/09/2020 17:48

Presumably someone that just visited somewhere which required a mask, and are heading somewhere else that requires a mask eg shop A to shop B/train station or something

Not Spain or France then
Merryoldgoat · 28/09/2020 17:50

I put mine on as soon as I get out of the car and walk to work. Easier than trying to juggle handbag, laptop and sanitise.

I work on a residential road. You wouldn’t know I was walking to work.

AdditionalCharacter · 28/09/2020 17:51

I wear mine the majority of the time when outside. I am in the shielding category and don't want to take any further risks to my health.

It's not harming anyone by me doing so, neither anyone else wearing them. Why get so uppity about it?

Honorocarrollkelly · 28/09/2020 17:51

I'm a nurse so wear one all the time at work, I'm so used to wearing it I don't realise I have one on sometimes!Grin.
I'm sure some people have wondered why I'm wandering around going to my car in a mask, but i just forget I have it on.
Also if I'm nipping to the local shops for groceries I keep it on, as its safer not to keep putting it on/off, just put it on and take it off when you're done.

Akire · 28/09/2020 17:54

Its easier to leave on for the 10min walk to shops and in between. The high street is very narrow and people get v close. Plus once I’m out I presume my hands “are dirty” so for me touching the inside of the mask while on /off between shops is more of a risk than leaving it on.

Pachonga · 28/09/2020 17:54

We have to wear masks outside when we cannot socially distance. Sometimes its just easier to put one on when you leave the house and forget about it. I don’t think anyone is ‘virtue signalling’ and honestly think you must be a bit of a twat to see someone in a mask and think that.

Livelovebehappy · 28/09/2020 17:56

If I’m somewhere walking in and out of shops, it’s just easier to keep it on. I really don’t think it will ever be mandatory to wear outside. People are threatening anarchy just having to wear them inside public places; people would literally riot on the streets if they were made to wear them anywhere outside their front doors.

ChaBishkoot · 28/09/2020 17:59

Where I live, it includes everywhere. You step outside, you mask up. It’s a statewide rule.

AvoidingRealHumans · 28/09/2020 18:00

I'd rather walk to the shops/ school run wearing it than pulling it out of my pocket/bag. I just think it feels more hygienic.
Rather not wear one at all but ya know

BoggledBudgie · 28/09/2020 18:00

Because it’s a great way to hide my teeth. Was half way through dental treatment before lockdown, most of my top teeth are broken/jagged now (there was temp fillings/caps but they were only designed to last a short while). I smile or speak and I look you’d swear I was a meth addict from the state of them, I’m hugely self conscious about it now so if I can get away with hiding them behind a mask I will. I do get odd looks for wearing one outside though!!

LindaEllen · 28/09/2020 18:03

I'm not sure why this is in 'AIBU'. What's your question?
I sometimes end up wearing mine when I walk home from the shop, because it's not far away, and if I'm carrying bags it's easier just to walk home than stop, take my mask off, then pick up my bags again.
I do see people out and about wearing masks but it's none of my business. If they want to wear them outside and it makes them feel safer, that's up to them.
I doubt it will become mandatory, though.

NameChange84 · 28/09/2020 18:05

It’s more hygienic and safer to keep it on rather than putting it on then taking it off and put it back on again when you are in and out of shops, workplaces etc.

Because I live in an area of local lockdown with a huge number of cases and ignorant people who won’t social distance and think nothing of coughing/sneezing/smoking and vaping just cms from your face. Although masks offer limited protection to the wearer they do help reduce viral load and so I’ve started wearing one for walks when it’s busy and I feel slightly more protected when idiots can’t social distance then have a coughing or sneezing fit in my face rather than covering their mouths as decent human beings do.

mynameiscalypso · 28/09/2020 18:05

I was thinking how handy my mask will be in winter because it will keep my nose warm outside.
