Masks wearing outside ?

jezmay · 28/09/2020 17:32

I keep seeing people wearing masks outside

Why are people walking around a big open park or field or just the streets ( they are on their own so not walking close contact with others ) wearing a mask?

Been seeing it loads lately . Loads of mask wearing outside , will this become mandatory?

@userxx I agree we haven't been told to wear one outside but people are I don't understand there is no point to it

But lots of people have given you reasons why they're wearing it outside, OP. It might just be convenience. Does it matter?

jezmay · 28/09/2020 20:53

@DontBeShelfish but they are wearing them on long country walks where they are outside for hours

Not question was is there evidence we need to wear outside now as if there is I will start to wear one
@1Morewineplease this is why I am asking as I didn't think there was any benefit to wearing it outside so I wondered as Chris witty changed things ?
As I said, I think some people just don’t want to take any chances whatsoever.
Joggers puff and pant as they go past you , hence their spray covers a bigger distance.
Maybe people just leave them on between shops etc... as it’s easier and you shouldn’t keep fussing with your mask with your hands.

WillowUfgood · 28/09/2020 20:55

As others have said, it's just easier. When I'm walking the dog, or staring at my phone, I'm not always watching ahead of me. And if there are various trails meeting up you can't see people coming from round corners. Far easier to leave it on than having to pull it back up every 5 mins.

TheQueef · 28/09/2020 20:56

I keep it on until I'm home and can wash my hands.
Took time to stop fiddling with it but now I get the nose right I forget it's on and if I'm bored I steam my specs up.

Hmm, then I stand corrected. I certainly don't, and wouldn't be doing that, and I don't think there's any updated guidance to suggest we all should.

But then, I'm in an area that's hitherto seen quite low numbers, perhaps in higher risk areas people are more cautious?

AfolMummy · 28/09/2020 20:58

I do this as it's easier like other PPs have said.

DioneTheDiabolist · 28/09/2020 20:59

I'm another who wears glasses. It's easier for me to fit it properly once and leave it on until I no longer need it rather than faff about and steam up me specs.

Ceara · 28/09/2020 21:03

My mum always wears one outside now, except on country walks. She says too many people aren't social distancing but they generally give a wider berth if they see an older person in a mask. Basically she wears it as a F* Off & Keep Your Distance signal.

I keep mine on if I am walking between shops etc, to avoid touching the mask with dirty hands. Isnt that what you're meant to do? Clean hands, put it on, clean hands again, leave it alone until you're done with it, then clean hands, put it securely away, clean hands again. I can't be doing with all of that performance outside every shop while juggling bags etc, so much easier simply to keep the mask on.

The risk outside is minimised but it’s not zero. The busier it is the more the risks of catching it, even outdoors goes up. It’s thought that those doing heavy exercise/panting etc pose a greater risk to those they may pass.

Nothing wrong with wearing a mask outdoors IMO. It’s mandatory in other countries. I’d agree that the public are generally extremely poor at social distancing.

@jezmay there could be a number of reasons:

 1. The official (Whitty) advice is not to touch your mask at all once it's on, and to remove and dispose of immediately before washing hands. Anyone following that advice to the letter won't take their mask off straight after leaving the shop / bus / taxi / pharmacy they've been in, but wait until they get home.
 1. To remain safe from the people who brush past, cycle past, jog past breathing in other people's faces.
 1. Because they are walking in between the bus and the shop or whatever and are following the guidance (see 1.)
 1. Because they are anxious and cautious.
 1. Because they forgot to take it off.
 1. Because their hands are too dirty to take it off.
 1. Because they think they look cool (this applies to a small minority).
Magissa · 28/09/2020 21:08

@viccat haha I am the same exactly. Hat today as well. I love being incognito!

JustGetThroughTheDay · 28/09/2020 21:10

We have to wear them when we collect the kids from the school playground!

Chicchicchicchiclana · 28/09/2020 21:15

I'm 50+ and wearing a mask in shops to protect other people from me. I've had asymptomatic Covid so am not hugely anxious about "getting it" or "getting it again" but on the offchance I'm carrying the virus around again then I don't want other people to be adversely affected.

I don't wear it anywhere other than in shops. Luckily I wfh and don't need to wear it at work. I don't go out to pubs, restaurants or cafes. I wear a mask for 30 minutes a day tops so can't complain and don't find it a problem. I

absolutely wouldn't wear one when I go out for a walk or bike ride.

CatSmith · 28/09/2020 21:17

I often come out of a shop wearing my mask, by time I’ve put my purse away, adjusted my bag/coat etc I forget I’m wearing a mask.

I didn’t realise it caused such issues! I will try to remove my mask ASAP in future.

Beebeeboo2 · 28/09/2020 21:18

I wear it on school run (and received email that DCs bubble needs to isolate today)

starshearts · 28/09/2020 21:30

@CatSmith I have clearly said now that I am talking about walks ! Out and about with fields and fields no shops in sight . Obviously I understand set and if you are in between shops or on route to work etc

Pachonga · 28/09/2020 21:40

Probably just wearing them to piss you off, OP

RuggerHug · 28/09/2020 21:44

I do because some people are selfish cunts who think nothing of getting too close or not even attempting to move as far away on the path as possible. I do move, before I'm slated, but I can climb walls or get in the middle of the road.

megletthesecond · 28/09/2020 21:46

I often forget I've got mine on. I've walked home in it a couple of times.

Kakiweewee · 28/09/2020 21:52

If I can't social distance, I wear a mask, whether it's inside or outside. I have to walk through town to get to my medical centre, so I'll put the mask on just outside town, then when I can get around without people everywhere, I'll take it off again. Every little bit I can do to lessen my risk is good, I'm high risk and I want to put off catching this until I can maybe get a vaccine or at least have lost more weight so I'm not high risk from two different things.

yevans · 28/09/2020 21:57

Honestly I didn't take mine off today coming outside just because it was bloody freezing and it helped keep me warm! 😅
