Masks wearing outside ?

jezmay · 28/09/2020 17:32

I keep seeing people wearing masks outside

Why are people walking around a big open park or field or just the streets ( they are on their own so not walking close contact with others ) wearing a mask?

Been seeing it loads lately . Loads of mask wearing outside , will this become mandatory?

Who the f*ck is “enjoying” wearing a mask? No one.

jezmay · 28/09/2020 19:07

@Pachonga I was referring to enjoying the drama of telling @Pickypolly to back away

@Sparklesocks but I didn't think the virus flew through the air in an old field with no one around

I've wondered about this too. I'm also a bit puzzled by people who are driving their car whilst alone and they're wearing a mask.

Louiselouie0890 · 28/09/2020 19:13

Because a lot of people don't know what social distancing is, it pisses me off. I've told countless people to back off

AnnieRich · 28/09/2020 19:13

I wear my mask when I am out and about. I wear glasses and once the steam has reduced I am reluctant to interfere with it.

lanthanum · 28/09/2020 19:15

DH prefers to wear a mask when out for a walk. It does mean that when we meet people coming the other way, they tend to give us a wider berth than they might have done otherwise, as it's effectively a label saying "I'm more nervous about this thing than you".

I don't wear one if I'm just out for a walk, but I do if I'm going somewhere, so that I'm not faffing about with it outside the shop. It's easier to put it on before I leave the house/car.

Pickypolly · 28/09/2020 19:16

Louise, I can assure you that I was in no way infringing on anyone’s 2m rule.
I was walking alone, it was as they approached me that the dramatics began!

@theviewfromhalfwaydown

I have seen people walking about on their own with them too but never thought much of it. People driving in cars on their own wearing masks confuses me though.
They might be delivering medicines to or visiting patients and clients in multiple households. Or parcel or food delivery couriers. Private ambulance or Uber drivers. Community volunteers going door to door.

They might be travelling from shop to shop or one address to another for reasons unbeknownst to you.

It’s more hygienic and safer to keep wearing it than continuously taking it off and putting it back on again - touching it and any Covid spores without any proper hand washing facilities.

I had two complete ignoramuses in the car next to me in the car park at the doctors, laughing their heads off and gesturing that I was stupid because I was wearing a mask in the car, so stupid in fact that they hadn’t realised that I could hear every word they were saying about me because both our windows were down. I replied that I was wearing a mask because I was picking a vulnerable elderly relative up from a blood test whilst their equally vulnerable elderly spouse was in the back of my car (blacked out windows) and as we weren’t from the same household, I was protecting them by wearing a mask, as advised by the GP.

So, there are many totally acceptable reasons for wearing masks inside a car and it doesn’t affect anyone else even if it’s just simply due to choice and preference rather than hygiene, convenience or absent mindedness.

Err who said that it did? Certainly wasn’t me.

All I’m saying is some people feel more comfortable wearing masks in open spaces too. They don’t have to but they choose to. Maybe they feel better that way. But I haven’t given much thought to why because it’s their life and not mine, and I’m not too bothered if it doesn’t impact me in any way.

So dramatic statements about people ‘enjoying’ masks aren’t necessary. Nobody is wearing a mask outdoors solely to wind you up, I promise.

scrivette · 28/09/2020 19:20

We have to wear one at the school drop off and a few times I have worn it most of the way home as I have forgotten to remove it. I am always amazed that I manage to do this though as I find them very uncomfortable when I first put them on.

HeronLanyon · 28/09/2020 19:26

If I see someone wearing one on empty pavement I assume -
They’ve just been or going to somewhere they need one.
They are vulnerable for some reason (could be loads of reasons) and are being cautious.
They are themselves not feeling well and concerned they may be spreading.
They are just being careful.
Got to say I’m not fond of runners who can appear from nowhere panting etc

I’ve started wearing mine a bit more just as I’ve got used it it and realised it helps me not touch my face (which I do a lot) and also how stupid it is to keep touching it and stuffing it in a pocket between wears. M

Country walk no although there are some where I’d have one with me as where so narrow and nowhere at all to distance in clambering bits.

BogRollBOGOF · 28/09/2020 19:56

I can understand people avoiding adjusting them between shops, just getting off a bus.

But cycling around a resevoir, or walking through very quiet fields? All that tells me is that the person has a grossly exagerated faith in the very modest benefits of a mask compared to the complex air movements outside plus UV.

Comparatively tiny numbers of people catch the virus in outdoor spaces, especially involving people passing by for a couple of seconds. The substantial risk is indoor, enclosed spaces with limited circulation of fresh air.

loulouljh · 28/09/2020 19:57

I have no idea!

jezmay · 28/09/2020 19:59

I just keep my distance from people outside I don't see why I would need to wear a mask.

The same people wearing masks outside then go into shops and take their mask down tap the shop assistant on the shoulder and ask them Where something is( with their mask on their chin)

jezmay · 28/09/2020 20:01

@BogRollBOGOF I know I have seen so many people over the last few days outside with masks on.

I have also seen people take their mask down to ask shop assistants questions and then overheard the staff saying how it makes them feel sick when they ( customers ) come right up to them and pull their mask down.

Absolutely ridiculous that people think being outside they need mask but then put people at risk by pulling it down in the shops

OP posts:
Pachonga · 28/09/2020 20:20

It’s probably not the same people

Redwinestillfine · 28/09/2020 20:21

I forget I have mine in sometimes 😂

pinkyboots1 · 28/09/2020 20:27

I wear mine all the time due to other people not socially distancing, it makes me feel much more secure when I'm out and about. Tbh I never really pay attention to the odd looks I get x

DanielRicciardosSmile · 28/09/2020 20:30

Today I left work where I had to wear a mask, went into a shop down the road where I also had to wear a mask, then went to catch a bus a little further on where (you guessed it) I had to wear a mask. Yes I could have taken it off and put it on several times but it seems a little pointless.

DontBeShelfish · 28/09/2020 20:33

I only wear it outside if I'm going between shops. Once my shopping is done and I'm walking home, I take the mask off. I don't wear it on walks or outdoors otherwise. It just saves me the palaver of pulling it on or off again.

1Morewineplease · 28/09/2020 20:36

Maybe they have depressed immune systems or are receiving dialysis or cancer treatment?
It doesn't matter. If someone feels the need to wear a mask outdoors then it's their choice.

userxx · 28/09/2020 20:39

I've noticed this too, the worlds gone mad.

MadisonAvenue · 28/09/2020 20:48

@barskits

I can barely tolerate one on my face for the relatively short time I'm actually in a shop. It would drive me insane if I had to wear it everywhere.
Same here, I thought I’d be used to wearing one by now but no.
jezmay · 28/09/2020 20:49

@1Morewineplease this is why I am asking as I didn't think there was any benefit to wearing it outside so I wondered as Chris witty changed things ?
