To think there might be something dodgy going on?

A family living opposite us sold their house almost a year ago, the new neighbours have still not moved in.
They mentioned back before Xmas they would be hoping to move after Xmas, then they blamed Covid for not being able to get a removal company (despite other families having moved recently both on our street and surrounding).

They come and go randomly, turn up for half hour then leave again then don’t come back for a day or two. It’s a quiet dead end road so really obvious when cars come and go.

All the curtains and blinds the old neighbours left are still up and have remained shut. The windows also never opened even during the heat wave etc - we were out in the garden most the day with DC’s so it was very obvious they were the only house with everything shut.
Something tells me something odd is going on but maybe I’m over thinking 🤷‍♀️

FFS. Unless the OP has left out massive levels of detail it’s not a cannabis farm.

For a start, you would smell it. The streets around STINK of weed 24/7.

They wouldn’t just draw the curtains, the windows would be TOTALLY blacked out. Usually with sheeting.

You’d see condensation on any exposed glass.

The lights would be on 24/7, super super bright, like massive spotlights. You’d spot it through any chink in the sheeting on the windows.

Your bills might go up extensively. For no reason.

People visiting in the middle of the night, going back and forward.

I feel really sorry for these people having such a neighbour and Flowers to all those who have heartbreaking reasons for delayed house moves.

OverTheRainbow88 · 28/09/2020 18:24

They could be growing weed and come And go to water the plants!

House next to us has been empty for 18 months now I’ve just been bought and I notice when the new neighbours are in and not, and I don’t think that’s odd?!!

sarahc336 · 28/09/2020 18:28

Weirdly my first thought was cannabis farm too 🤨

Bargebill19 · 28/09/2020 18:29

@Bluntness100

That’s exactly what happened in a nearby village. Only they rented the old farm house bang in the center of the village next to a busy church. That was a bad winter snow wise. The abscess of snow on the farm house gave them away! The place was completely full with plants about to be harvested.

Bargebill19 · 28/09/2020 18:30

Sorry - absence not abscess

TheQueef · 28/09/2020 18:32

What's the address?
Asking for a friend.

sammylady37 · 28/09/2020 18:35

Christ I despise nosy neighbours. I have one across the road, a retired woman who seems to sit at her kitchen window all day and unashamedly makes comments or asks questions on what she has observed.

She commented to me once that she noticed that sometimes I opened the window in my spare room in advance of guests arriving but not always, so she deduced that some of the guests didn’t sleep in the spare room, but she couldn’t figure this out as there was more than one male guest to whom this pattern applied. Said in a disapproving tone, of course. She was met with a steely stare and a “why are you concerned about my guests?”

rwalker · 28/09/2020 18:38

could be 100 and 1 reason and not all dodgy .When we were kid parents sold there house and we moved in with grandparents to break the chain .
My parent bought a new house but in the mean time my nan died we stayed 18month at my grandads our new house left empty they saved and got work done month before we moved in

FamBae · 28/09/2020 18:42

my dh and I bought our house over a year before we were able to move in, we used the proceeds of the sale of my house to purchase our current home but his took a lot longer for the sale to go through for various reasons including lockdown and we felt it better to stay put in his house in case the sale fell through. We had packed up a fair amount of our belongings and expected to move last winter, I was unpacking during lockdown for cake tins and summer clothes Grin

MiriamMargo · 28/09/2020 18:43

someone's an expert !!!! Very suspicious
carreterra · 28/09/2020 18:45

@1Pinkfluffyelephant
Some MNers have given you harsh comments, but there is a difference between being nosey and being concerned, and as you say, you are on a quiet street where things are more noticeable. I'm sure i would notice if a neighbour's curtains/blinds were always closed and no windows open.
@BikerChick91
I'm so sorry you are having such a tough time, would you consider re-selling the house? I know what you mean about the memories & future plans/dreams being in that house. I hope things improve for you, especially after the Covid waiting game. Best wishes.

Bargebill19 · 28/09/2020 18:46

@TheQueef

🤣
It was a couple of years ago and the property has since been sold and demolished then rebuilt as several homes instead!!

lifesalongsong · 28/09/2020 18:48
@HollowTalk

Not to the extent of recognising that the blinds and curtains haven’t changed and to observe every single cars arrival 😂 you’d have to be sat at your window constantly for that!
Only if you're supremely unobservant, anyone going about normal house cleaning, going to the loo, taking stuff up and down stairs etc could easily look out of their upstairs windows 20plus times a day, of course you'd notice stuff.

Recently there have been 3 cannabis farms raided not far from me and the police said each time it was neighbours who reported suspicions.

Crankley · 28/09/2020 18:51

OMG you people don't have a clue do you? It's obvious, the floorboards will be up and it's where they are stashing the bodies!

I agree with Marisishidinginmyattic and don't understand this obsession with other people's lives. It's none of your business, stop peeping through the curtains!

oakleaffy · 28/09/2020 18:51

Bloody hell...Imagine living in such a curtain twitchy gossipy street..
Mrs snoop with a long nose peeping behind the nets as she has naff all else to do all day.

Horrible.

HeronLanyon · 28/09/2020 18:53

oakleaffy That’s so offensive, and for no reason, that I actually laughed out loud. Brilliant, just brilliant.

GabsAlot · 28/09/2020 18:57

i wouold have said cannabis but i dont think they usually come and introduce themselves

im in a cul de sac so know most of the neighbours id notice an empty house aswell

FamBae · 28/09/2020 18:58

@MissConductUS that is a great story

@rorosemary I'm so sorry for your loss Flowers

1Pinkfluffyelephant · 28/09/2020 19:03

@oakleaffy yes that’s clearly the case 🙄 Feel free to go male pointless comments somewhere else!!

@lifesalongsong exactly this!!! It surprised me so many people clearly are too afraid to use their windows and must walk around with their eyes closed all day. It’s quite easy to notice little things as you said just doing day to day things.
Also just want to send 💐 to those who have had a tough time recently in regards to not being able to move etc. These clearly were not the reasons I was thinking may have happened.

I’m glad some people have pointed out some people feel the need to make daft or harsh comments on the post that are simply not helpful. AIBU is a place to ask if you are BU or not and looking for opinions not for people to become keyboard warriors and make harsh or insulting comments.

And that yes you do notice things with out being nosey or a curtain twitcher.
Also that these types of things have happened before and actually have turned out to be something dodgy, so yes it can happen, however unlikely!

HaggieMaggie · 28/09/2020 19:04

They could be military, bought a house, dont want to rent it out but will move in when they get out of the forces.

Make the most of the peace.

1Pinkfluffyelephant · 28/09/2020 19:05

@HeronLanyon yes it’s very funny people attempting to make ‘offensive comments’ to people so much so it makes you laugh. Good job I can quite easily ignore the utter nonsense these people post. Oh and great example you must be setting to your kids 🙄 what a lovely human being you are. Ha !

Yankathebear · 28/09/2020 19:08

What do you think they are doing op?

LovePoppy · 28/09/2020 19:11

What exactly is the dodgy business you’ve imagined they are up to?
