Would you return an item that arrived twice?

marmite79 · 28/09/2020 15:04

Ordered one item from a website. Item only cost £10 + delivery so not expensive.

2 arrived today. My first thought was that I'd accidentally ordered 2. I checked and I didn't. Also checked my bank. Only paid for 1..

Only cost £10 as above so nothing expensive would you contact shop to return!

It's a very large well known company who I'm sure wouldn't notice one item being sent for free 🤣

Don't really want the faff of sending it back nor do I want to pay to return something I didn't order.

Would you contact them? Or just keep it. It something which 2 of would be handy tbf.

I'm sure the shop probably wouldn't want to pay to return something that only costs £10.

Aibu to just keep it. They sent them in separate boxes with 2 invoices so clearly my order was processed twice by mistake!

Contact them. Tell them they can pick it up at their expense if they want it back. Chances are they won't bother.

JaJaDingDong · 28/09/2020 15:08

It's streaming if you don't let them know.
However I'd be willing to bet they'll tell you to keep it when you do tell them. So tell them.

I’ve had this on a few occasions and without fail I’ve always been told to keep them - most expensive being £300 worth of Charlotte Tilbury products. Companies have always been surprised that I’ve actually contacted them.

Stinkyguineapig · 28/09/2020 15:13

I've had this happen a couple of times. Once was a made to measure blind! Both times ive contacted the companies to say I've accidentally been sent 2 items and they said to keep it (neither time were items I could easily return)

On the flip side I know people that tell amazon their parcel hasnt arrived, later found it and end up with 2 things.

nettytree · 28/09/2020 15:14

My mum once had 2 sets of Pyrex casserole dishes delivered from the Marshall ward catalogue. She only ordered 1. She said, its their fault so she didn't return them. My cousin got the extra set for a wedding present.

boriselbow · 28/09/2020 15:14

I suspect that if you contact them and ask what they want you to do they'll tell you to keep it. I'm pretty sure a big company would not want the processing/posting costs and effort for that amount. So you'll probably get to keep it without any guilt. If they ask you to send it back ask them to organise a courier to collect it at their expense (so you don't need to go on an extra journey to post it back). As pp said, technically if you just keep it that's theft.

I've had this with a couple of items costing more than you mention and in one case (where it was an item we definitely didn't need 2 of) the company's advice was to donate it to charity or sell it on e-bay!

ToastyCrumpet · 28/09/2020 15:16

Yes I’d return it. I’d think less of myself if I didn’t.

TheTeenageYears · 28/09/2020 15:20

This happened to be recently. I contacted the customer service dept who told me to pop it into a branch when I was passing a store. A few weeks later I went in, explained to the cashier what had happened and what I had been instructed to do, handed over the goods in the original delivery box and walked out not to think about it again. A few more weeks on I receive an email from said retailer detailing a refund for my return. At this point I think I've done my bit in letting them know, gone out of my way to return to a store rather than them arrange to collect from me. If they have chosen not to log the information with the order number so when it went back to them they know it was a duplicate it isn't my problem and I will just accept the refund and not contact them again.

Margo34 · 28/09/2020 15:22

I've had this recently except the item in question was over £700, I told them and they apologised and said they'd arrange to collect but they still haven't yet, 2 weeks on, despite me reminding them.

So tempted to whack it on e-Bay.

Lazypuppy · 28/09/2020 15:22

Nope i wouldn't

igotdemons · 28/09/2020 15:23

I always contact them because I don’t want to be charged twice if or when they realise! Sometimes I’ve been told to keep it but generally they want it returned or collected...

Sh05 · 28/09/2020 15:23

I'm sure if you contact them they'll be so surprised you did that they'll tell you to keep them.
Happened to me some years ago, ordered cake decorating sets for DD and received two. They told me to keep both.
Similarly, years ago, when my dB first started working, he was paid twice by accident, brought it up with his manager who insisted he keep the second payment as a bonus for his honesty!

RepeatSwan · 28/09/2020 15:24

Yes I would contact but wouldn't incur any cost returning.

dontdisturbmenow · 28/09/2020 15:24

I would call yes.

TweetUsOnFacebook · 28/09/2020 15:24

I had this happen and emailed to let them know but I never heard anything in reply. It was a book so it went it the charity box.

toomanyplants · 28/09/2020 15:28

I had this a few years back with a tv, contacted company who arranged collection.
May sound extreme, but I sleep soundly knowing I do the right thing.

VickySunshine · 28/09/2020 15:31

Yes, of course.

Hingeandbracket · 28/09/2020 15:32

How would it be stealing?
frazzledasarock · 28/09/2020 15:33

Yes I’d call the company and let them know and arrange for a collection.

I wouldn’t keep it unless the company said I could.

fatherfintanstack · 28/09/2020 15:34

it's happened to me i think twice over the years, I contacted the companies and they said to keep the extras. I would feel wrong not doing so and it avoids any hassle if they notice the mistake later on.

Even with a big company, I always think you never know if someone will be punished for their mistake and I don't like to take that risk.

marmite79 · 28/09/2020 15:38

I'll call them buy not sure they'd want something that costs only £10 back.

I'm not a thief honestly.

Once I had a £400 printer turn up. Had my name on it but must have been muddle with my order worth only £20 🤣 I did ring on that occasion!

I've had this with a rug from Next. I gave it to a friend.

It’s not stealing at all 🙄 I’d keep it op
CSIblonde · 28/09/2020 15:58

I got two sets of pretty glass drawer handles in error, under £10 for 6. When I phoned up they said keep them,so I gifted them to a hard up friend who was making over her daughter's bedroom on a budget.
