How long did you bleed for after having mirena?

Had mirena coil inserted whilst on day 7 of my period. Still bleeding a few days later. Not sure how long I can expect to be bleeding for. Sounds silly but I've been seeing someone for a few weeks now and if I'm bleeding for months and months like some people report, it may make sex difficult. Also, the annoyance of bleeding constantly. I knew this when I signed up for it, but was wondering what other people's experiences were? I'm bleeding like a normal period at the moment!

Not at all, just a bit of spotting for me.

Dmacka75 · 27/09/2020 09:22

On my first one, I bled for about 6 weeks x

lasangoles · 27/09/2020 09:23

@dmacka75 that's good to know. I can deal with 6 weeks!

Mine was inserted fir suspected endometriosis, so I did usually bleed heavily and for long periods of time. If you have a lighter period usually, it may well he less
AKissAndASmile · 27/09/2020 09:24

They finally let me have it out after 8 months of bleeding 😭

Dilligaf81 · 27/09/2020 09:24

I'm on my 3rd and spotting for a few days then fine. It was the best thing I ever had done regarding contraception, I love it and have recommended it to anyone who asks.

I had the implant a few years ago (they refused to remove it after asking 5 times so I cut it out myself to prove a point that they need to listen to women and give them autonomy over their bodies, but that's another story - I was slightly reckless back then!) and ended up bleeding for 6 months on it. I hope I don't have the same with this...

Both mirenas I've had fitted I bleed on and off for about 4-6 weeks afterwards

PolarBearStrength · 27/09/2020 09:29

About 9 months. I had to beg to have it taken out 😡

Coffee2sugars · 27/09/2020 09:30

I bled for 2 months and then the damn thing fell out 😔 Never again!

I also had this with the implant. And as per my PP the Mirena too! So it’s a possibility!
lasangoles · 27/09/2020 09:30

@polarbearstrength crazy how hard it is to have things like this removed. I had the implant and it nearly ruined me. I had to cut it out myself as they wanted me to keep it in and persevere for 3 more months.

@polarbearstrength bugger! Fingers crossed for me!

It’s about 7 years ago now, but I got mine removed after 3 months of continual bleeding. I had to ask three times, medics were firmly insistent that it would all settle down and apparently unbothered by the inconvenience, expense and unnaturalness of perpetual bleeding, even after pph.

LikeaSnowflake · 27/09/2020 09:32

6 weeks or so first time before I had children and then after my second child, I had one put in a few months after the birth and I bled 6 months on and off. However, once it settles - nothing - which is bliss!

BuffaloCauliflower · 27/09/2020 09:32

Didn’t bleed at all, had absolutely no issues with my Mirena for the 18 ish months I had it, except slightly more PMT than the Pill (more like natural PMT when I’m not on anything so not a concern)

PolarBearStrength · 27/09/2020 09:34

I can’t remember if it was in reference to the implant or the Mirena but I remember a GP telling her trainee (after I’d had the whole saga getting it removed) that if you bleed longer than 6 weeks, there is a 90% chance you’ll bleed indefinitely. No idea if this is actually true though!

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 27/09/2020 09:45

I didn't bleed at all, a day of v light spotting.

movingonup20 · 27/09/2020 09:45

Nothing for a week then 2 weeks solid, then went 8 weeks (and got seriously worried) since I seem to get a "normal" period every 8 weeks and light spotting at the appropriate time in between. I do get your concerns, it's why I got mine too (never expected to need bc as exh had the snip)

PurBal · 27/09/2020 10:39

3 weeks. And fully settled into a predictable rhythm by 3 months

Imloosingmyshit · 27/09/2020 10:47

None

TheFormidableMrsC · 27/09/2020 10:50

I flooded daily for 3 months and had it removed. It was a nightmare.

Itwasaquarterpast11 · 27/09/2020 10:53

Had it fitted July 2019, still bleeding now, although no flooding anymore least.

cochineal7 · 27/09/2020 10:57

I didn’t bleed much when they put it in about 6 weeks after giving birth. However, removing it 5 years later was an entire different story...Will. Never. Have. One. Again.

Annoyedxx123 · 27/09/2020 11:32

6 months and counting so far. Heavily enough that I’m now anaemic. Have an appointment this week to request removal for the 4th time. Same thing happened with the implant.
