How long did you bleed for after having mirena?

Had mirena coil inserted whilst on day 7 of my period. Still bleeding a few days later. Not sure how long I can expect to be bleeding for. Sounds silly but I've been seeing someone for a few weeks now and if I'm bleeding for months and months like some people report, it may make sex difficult. Also, the annoyance of bleeding constantly. I knew this when I signed up for it, but was wondering what other people's experiences were? I'm bleeding like a normal period at the moment!

@cochineal7

I didn’t bleed much when they put it in about 6 weeks after giving birth. However, removing it 5 years later was an entire different story...Will. Never. Have. One. Again.
What happened? I'm due to have one fitted next month.....
GoodbyeToCare · 27/09/2020 11:44

I bled for three months. GP refused to remove it even though I was anaemic so I removed it myself. Not recommended but I had had enough by that point!

Heptember · 27/09/2020 11:47

Six weeks, and then it actually came out in the middle of a huge clot 😬

After that, I had an ablation.

Charleyhorses · 27/09/2020 12:18

Until it expelled itself 3 months later.
Went on to have a hysterectomy when they finally listened and found massive fibroids that were squashing my bladderHmm

Ohdear101 · 27/09/2020 21:51

5 months . Then nothing for years . To get the thing out though ... Omg awful experience.

TechGinny · 27/09/2020 23:36

A year, until I had the bloody thing taken out. Oh, and it made my hair fall out.

MaddeningtheUnhelpful · 27/09/2020 23:43

Didn't bleed at all with either (I'm on number 2) infact both times I never bled again...

mellowgreenspring · 27/09/2020 23:56

Bloody awful things, why don't you consider taking the pill back to back?? It's perfectly ok to do that guidance has changed and you can get a higher progesterone version, change brands and find one to suit you?

Instead of the pain, battle and bloody begging for it to be removed.

mellowgreenspring · 27/09/2020 23:57

@GoodbyeToCare you removed your own coil, wow, just wow that made my eyes water

Stripyhoglets1 · 28/09/2020 01:30

On and off for about 3 months but it's settled down now and it's great - no more painful heavy periods just light bleeding one a month now. Wish I'd had one years ago as this one was put in to deal with peromenopause and so I shouldn't need another one in 5 years.

Nat6999 · 28/09/2020 01:44

I would get the combined pill & take it back to back if you can, I did that for a year then had a 1 week break & started again, the period was minimal. I took it like that until my doctor took me off it due to my age & I had a hysterectomy.

GoodbyeToCare · 28/09/2020 17:17

@mellowgreenspring I did and it was totally painless. I tugged gently on the strings and it came away no problem which made me wonder if it was on its way out anyway.

Happyspud · 28/09/2020 17:27

Bit I'd spotting for 2-3 months but almost no periods or spotting at all for the next 2 years!

lasangoles · 29/09/2020 15:20

I can't take the combined pill because I'm breastfeeding and it can affect your breast milk.

A year until I bled so hard that it came out! Well, we assume that's what happened to it as it was confirmed AWOL after an epically bad episode.
