AIBU to think it's just completely unnacceptable?

The thing that stands out here is the use of "on a roast". I accept enough people use it that it is fine but it makes me see mushy peas dolloped over the meat which is definitely odd. As a side, mushy peas is just another vegetable so there is no problem there.

Surely the only place for mushy peas (or indeed a pea fritter) is with fish and chips in Whitby or Saltford?

I dont live in either of those places and always have mushy peas with my fish and chips.

Mushy peas originated as dried peas, boiled up in water to swell up, and dyed green.

In some parts of the country they are a regional delicacy.

In other parts they are mocked.

Do the people saying 'yuk' actually say that word out loud in rl?

OldEvilOwl · 28/09/2020 15:59

Yes I love mushy peas with a roast. We even have them for Xmas dinner. My mum forgot to soak them last year and tried to fob us off with tinned ones! Need to be the proper soaked ones

ErrolTheDragon · 28/09/2020 16:03

When I was growing up we always had 'processed peas' with a roast - unmushed mushy peas, as far as I could tell. Of course, this was at a time when everyone didn't have a freezer and other types of tinned peas were khaki and slimy. The processed peas were particularly good with lamb - and, of course mint sauce so you got the perfect combo of mint and vinegar.

Do you live south of Portsmouth though?

I’ve just realised something that may make a difference - I never plate up a roast dinner.

So - that’s why I serve different meats and veg. For example, most family and friends love gammon and lamb but I’m not a fan so I cook a few meats and then loads of veg/potato dishes to go with each one so everyone can decide what their favourite accompaniment is to whatever they choose. Everyone who comes tends to have 3/4 plates and we sit over a while eating what’s laid out. I’m basically Mrs Toby Carvery I’ve realised Grin

PunishmentSnart · 28/09/2020 21:30

I also can’t stop laughing at everyone picking up on “are they up North” comment.

I do think it’s a where you’re from thing. I went for what was described to me as the best roast ever round Hertfordshire ways and oh my goodness, I felt like crying when out came a slab of steak (not a good piece) potatoes that were clearly not roasted (they had been politely introduced to a radiator by the looks of it), 4 hard (al dente) carrots and a fucking jus that was thin as water. It was about £20 as well and don’t get me started on the fact they don’t have curry and gravy in the chippy there Shock

Anyone remember Surprise dried peas? Served with Yeoman instant potato?

BoudiccasBoudoir · 28/09/2020 21:35

We are not very traditional in my house but still never had mushy peas with roast dinner. But maybe we should. Everyone likes mushy peas. We eat them nearly every Friday with battered cod, scampi or buttered kippers. Chips, lemon wedges and tartare sauce too ofc

BoudiccasBoudoir · 28/09/2020 21:38

@ErrolTheDragon

I'm going to have to eat some marrowfat peas and mint sauce now, that actually sounds really nice

MintyYogaTea · 28/09/2020 23:02

I did this once at a restaurant..ordered.the carvery but T the self serve.bit.for veggies they had self serve.for other meals,. One of which was fish and chips, so I put some mushy peas.on my.plate.alongside the parsnips.carrots etc....yummy

Am drooling....I love minty marrowats. The only.thing that tops them are Nandos minty macho peas with mint and chilli. Aldi sometimes has them too

justwinginglife1 · 28/09/2020 23:11

My nan used to put mushy peas on a roast and I loved it. To be fair I've never done it myself, but I'm not against it at all

Tillygetsit · 28/09/2020 23:42

They should not be acceptable anywhere. 🤮

Sunshineboo · 28/09/2020 23:43

yabu. it's my favourite

They were the other reason for eating tinned processed peas.Grin
Kimchii · 29/09/2020 00:03

I cant eat garden peas because of sensory issues and history of eating disorder.
I cant stand round smooth food especially if its got a skin.
Even one pea rolling around makes me gag.
Mushed i can eat.
Especially with salt and vinegar. Its not the tasts of peas im adverse to its the texture.

ITA. Just threw out a bag of frozen peas because they were too small and shelly. I don't get why you pay a premium for petit pois when the ratio of round and shell to pea flesh is so much higher.

My Grandma always did mushy peas with a roast dinner! Kind of miss it now
