Dp and dc love mushy peas on their Roast.

MJMG2015 · 27/09/2020 18:15

@GinWithRosie

Or even on my ROAST dinner 😂 I wouldn't have them on toast ☺️
Ah, you don't know what you're missing!!
AltoCation · 27/09/2020 18:21

Roast beef: roast potatoes, mash, roast parsnips, Yorkshires, fine green beans, maybe broccoli, carrots, petit pois. Horseradish. Gravy.

Roast lamb: roast potatoes, Mash, roast carrots, leeks in white sauce, maybe green beans, broccoli, petit pois. Mint sauce/ red currant sauce

Roast chicken: roast or mash potatoes, stuffing, broccoli, green beans, carrots, Savoy cabbage or cavolo Nero / kale.

Roast pork. Roast potatoes, maybe stuffing, roast sweet potatoes, red cabbage, Savoy cabbage, petit pois. Crackling. Apple sauce.

Roast gammon / ham: mash, cauliflower cheese (or parsley sauce, and new potatoes) , shredded Savoy cabbage, peas carrots.

No mushy peas, no sweet corn.

I'm genuinely surprised to see how many people are adverse to sweetcorn with a roast of any kind.

averythinline · 27/09/2020 18:29

Mushy peas are vile although have never tried homemade ones....
I dont understand cauliflower cheese with a roast ...it was a meal of its in when I was a kid...but we were poor so probably only had a roast once or twice a year.....

Am interested in the Yorkshire pudding in a loaf tin??

We had Yorkshires often as cheap but never anything other than the little ones....

NancyBotwinBloom · 27/09/2020 18:31

My favourite is processed peas on a roast. Not mushy. And tuned baby carrots.

NancyBotwinBloom · 27/09/2020 18:31

Tinned

Hahaha88 · 27/09/2020 19:21

Wait what?! Now we having specific veggies depending on what meat we're having?!? Why??

JayeAshe · 27/09/2020 19:27

@BalanceGreen
Nothing wrong with boiled potatoes alongside the roast potatoes, both are lovely. Also boiled potatoes absorb more gravy Wink

Sertchgi123 · 27/09/2020 19:30

We have them sometimes but only ones I do myself from scratch.

userxx · 27/09/2020 19:57

@AltoCation I've copied, pasted and emailed that to myself. I'm sorted for roast dinners now 👍

SittingontheSidelines · 28/09/2020 01:49

I find some vegetables compliment the meat better than others. I love all veg so if someone serves me up a roast I'm not going to complain about their veg selection but if I'm choosing then I'll choose what I think goes best to suit my taste. (And it would actually be truer for me to say the meat to compliment the veg rather than the other way around)

Oh and I'm perfectly happy to have cauliflower cheese as a meal in itself as well as a side with a roast.

orangejuicer · 28/09/2020 04:44

Where do sprouts fit in? With which meat??

TitsOutForHarambe · 28/09/2020 05:09

Is this even legal?

If it is, it shouldn't be. What kind of monster would do this?

BarbaraofSeville · 28/09/2020 05:26

@CherryPavlova

Grim idea. Are they from the north?
No, we have mushy peas with hot pork pies on bonfire night here, or with fish and chips, both of which seem to blow the minds of non locals.

Never heard of mushy peas on a roast dinner, but people can have what they like, surely.

We have sprouts if available, or broccoli if not and usually sweetcorn because it's easy.

Never garden peas or carrots because neither of us like them that much.

oopsiedaisy2 · 28/09/2020 05:47

Disgusting 😷

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 28/09/2020 06:01

We used to have the roast veg cooked separately but we now have them more as a tray bake.

Cauliflower used to be plain rather than with cheese but now it's done sliced and roasted with seasoning.

We've also had more of a Mediterranean vegetable mix of courgettes, onion, aubergine, garlic and herbs. All the veg seems more seasoned than in the past.

Sweetcorn on a roast is all kinds of wrong
pilates · 28/09/2020 06:49

Yuk but I hate mushy peas full stop.

Mrsemcgregor · 28/09/2020 07:13

My grandparents from Liverpool always had mushy peas and onions in vinegar (not pickled onions) with a roast. No idea if it was a Liverpool tradition or just what they enjoyed.

I can’t recreate it myself, my Nan used magic when she cooked. I’d give anything for another one of those roasts.

PunishmentSnart · 28/09/2020 13:33

So do you all only ever serve one meat at a time too?

I did chicken, gammon and beef yesterday. Plus loads of veg. How else do you make bubble & squeak the next day?

mrsbyers · 28/09/2020 13:36

Very common in NE homes and quite often see sweet corn too - neither for me

Same, my gran's roast chicken dinner was something else. I miss her :(

I would never do more than one kind of meat. Especially ones that don't go together in taste or with accompaniments. I just don't think they complement each other.

Chicken and gammon go OK together, but not beef with either, IMO, or to my taste. Sausages / chipolatas go well with chicken but not with beef or lamb.

But if you like it...all good.

Mushy peas originated in chip shops, surely? They are made for F&C!

Mushy peas are made to have vinegar and salt on - which is why they don't go well with a roast, IMO.

I don't like mushy peas, but our chippie does a wicked pea fritter - basically a ball of mushy peas in batter.
