Also have you noticed sometimes in Toby Carvery they do mac & cheese or boiled onions - they’re both odd
Roast sides to me

Maybe they do it for vegetarians who like all the trimmings - stuffing, roast potatoes etc but don’t want the meat.

I am genuinely confused as to people saying peas of any sort don't belong on a roast. Aren't peas and carrots the staple veg for any roast?!?

I wouldn't choose mushy peas if normal were an option but I'd have them over mo peas.

Sweetcorn isn't something I'd have done myself but my in laws do it and I'm used to it now. Also my frozen mixed veg which I sometimes use has it in.

Honestly what's supposed to be wrong with Cauliflower on a roast? I mean I don't like Cauliflower much but surely it's perfectly normal roast accompaniment?

Beetroot and beans are sooooo wrong!!

boobot1 · 27/09/2020 09:19

A Sunday lunch, is not Sunday lunch without proper mushy peas

CherryPavlova · 27/09/2020 09:20

Grim idea. Are they from the north?

userxx · 27/09/2020 09:21

Sometimes have them on a roast, but then again, I have cauliflower cheese, broccoli, carrot and turnip, creamed leeks, green beans, cabbage. I like loads Of veg with a roast and tend to make what I think will go with the meats I’m serving.

My kind of roast 👍

DanielRicciardosSmile · 27/09/2020 09:24

Personally I wouldn't put mushy peas, mashed potatoes, or cauliflower cheese on a roast dinner, but who am I to say anyone else should follow suit?

Ghostlyglow · 27/09/2020 09:25

@CherryPavlova

Grim idea. Are they from the north?
Well, it's grim up north Grin
EternalOptimist7 · 27/09/2020 09:28

I don’t like mushy peas but always have garden peas or petit pois with a roast.

AltoCation · 27/09/2020 09:29

Mushy peas with gravy?

Oh no.

I could possibly see mushy peas with spiced roast pork, red cabbage, apple sauce, stuffing.

But mushy peas with rare rib of beef?

The country is in the hands of barbarians.

cctvrec · 27/09/2020 09:29

MIL does the homemade ones with her roasts. At first I I thought it was all kinds of wrong but realised that the proper, soaked and cooked peas are very different to your bog standard tinned ones. And like garden peas, it does actually work. I still don't do them myself but I do enjoy Boxing Day at MIL's even if she does absolutely MURDER the veg making everything sloppy. Those poor, poor Brussels. Sad little soggy sods......

cushioncovers · 27/09/2020 09:30

I like mushy peas and marrow fat peas but not with a roast.

PigletJohn · 27/09/2020 10:32

De gustibus non est disputandum.

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 27/09/2020 14:12

Although a neighbour used to have curry sauce on his Sunday Roast and would have it with a ricey spicy stuffing/biryani , mushy peas, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and gingered carrots. It tasted great but it didn't feel like a Sunday Roast.

ToastedEnglishMuffin · 27/09/2020 14:30

@Angelina82

Yes, unacceptable. Like sweetcorn or cauliflower as veg with a roast. All wrong.

People have a problem with cauliflower with a roast dinner now?!! But cauliflower cheese is my favourite part of a roast! 😭

I was brought up that cauliflower chese had no place with a roast, totally separate dish.

However I'd rather have that than bread sauce.

nosswith · 27/09/2020 14:36

Not for me, thanks.

SittingontheSidelines · 27/09/2020 17:50

As long as it tastes good to you it doesn't matter but here's how I do it
Roast beef: mushy peas, cauliflower or cauliflower cheese
Roast lamb: mushy and or garden peas cauliflower or cauliflower cheese
Roast pork: garden peas, sweetcorn, cauliflower
Roast chicken: garden peas, sweetcorn , cauliflower, bread sauce,
Roast Turkey: garden peas, sweetcorn, cauliflower/cauliflower cheese, bread sauce
And lots of other vegetables too. I love vegetables but definitely think some go better with white meat and some better with red

Bluntness100 · 27/09/2020 17:53

I dislike mushy peas so it is a no from me, but I’d happily put cauliflower cheese with a roast and have done in the past. I don’t get why that’s a crime, 😃

DollyDoneMore · 27/09/2020 17:53

Frozen peas, yes. Mushy peas, no.

Cauliflower cheese, get fucked. That’s like having a spoonful of lasagne with your roast.

Votesforpedro · 27/09/2020 17:55

Sweetcorn has no business being off its cob let alone as part of a roast although an expeption to eating corn off its cob would be in a chowder.

Glitteryone · 27/09/2020 17:56

I love mushy peas but not a roast dinner. No thank you!

Bluntness100 · 27/09/2020 17:56

That’s like having a spoonful of lasagne with your roast

Well now there’s an idea,,,😂

Votesforpedro · 27/09/2020 17:57

Cauliflower cheese goes wonderfully with a maple glazed roast ham.

AdaColeman · 27/09/2020 17:58

Oh no! Mushy peas with a roast.....so many kinds of wrong, as is sweetcorn with a roast.

Madcats · 27/09/2020 18:07

It's the law in this house that sweetcorn and gravy has to accompany every yorkshire pudding/toad. Peas go in paella, egg fried rice or pasta (unless we've run out of veg for a meal).

I am yet to be convinced by the necessity of cauliflower.

Madcat household is eagerly awaiting the return of sprout season.
