Any women here who like board games?

So, I have a confession to make. Pandemic made me a board game addict. I always loved board games, but I haven't played them for a really long time. So when lockdown started I bought few to play with my six year old son and husband. Unfortunately, it turned out that I'm the only one in my house who really likes them, the two of them could happily never ever to play again.

I know there are solo games, but I like to play with other people. Luckily, my husband's best friend likes to play them, so I play when he comes along. I'm still gathering courage to play in the public board games playroom (and it is a little bit hard to find time with one year old).

So, any more like me? And important question - how do you persuade your family to play with you?

Me! I love board games. Unfortunately my toddler is too little and my oldest son is only 6 so really not big enough to play properly yet. I might be able to persuade my husband into a game of monopoly on the Xbox or uno if I’m lucky, but otherwise I have to play on my phone which isn’t the same!

GoldfishParade · 07/11/2020 08:00

What's special about wasgji puzzles?

110APiccadilly · 07/11/2020 08:21

There's a (free, but you pay for expansions if you want them) online version of Dominion which you can choose to play against a bot, your friends, or randomly chosen people. DH and I played it quite a lot over the first lockdown with friends.

Simarilion · 07/11/2020 08:35

Awesome thread! DP & I love Catan but not playable with just us 2- what 2 player games would you guys recommend?

Rhayader · 07/11/2020 08:50

I’ve attached a screenshot from a spreadsheet of our games with “min players” column. I’ve crossed out kids games. We also have Terraforming Mars and Wingspan which are not on the spreadsheet,

@opinionatedfreak and anyone who likes Ticket To Ride - which version is best? I want to buy it for dc aged 9 for Christmas. Also tempted by Carcassonne

MummytoCSJH · 07/11/2020 12:13

Sorry I'm late - me! My family get bored so easily, I could quite easily play them all day. Lots I haven't heard of here though.

Blurp · 07/11/2020 16:47

We like the original (North American map), but have also played the Europe version and enjoyed it - it's a little more complicated, though. I'd get the original to start with.

Carcassonne is good too, and quite relaxing! If you want to know what it's like, you can play it on a mobile device - search for Farmassonne.

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 07/11/2020 16:51

Household of addicts. We have dozens.

Favourites are Ticket to Rode, Concept, Alambra, Dixit.

PurplePIG1 · 07/11/2020 20:45

@Blurp thanks, I will get the original, if we love it then maybe the Europe one could be a Christmas present next year Grin will try the online carcassonne too.

@kavalkada

And Forbidden Island is also on the list. It looks great.
We have Forbidden Island and personally I find it a bit average. The game play is rather slow and clunky and to me it feels like it never really gets started before it ends.

I love Mapominoes, Jungle Speed, Dutch Blitz, Carcassonne, Dobble, Catan, Bananagrams... that’s all I can remember for now!

Fortunately my husband enjoys playing them too, in fact we probably spend more time playing games than watching television.

Maybe try Dobble with your 6-year-old?

LBOCS2 · 07/11/2020 21:54

Our 4yo is OBSESSED with Dobble, I've sort of gone off it a bit 😂 still, it's better than the puzzles she likes to watch me do, which I find simultaneously extremely dull and extremely frustrating.

I recently managed to find one of the rerelease sets of Escape from Colditz, which I'm really looking forward to playing soon - we just need to carve out a day an afternoon to concentrate on it.

We play a lot of cards too - cribbage and whist are favourites.

ISpeakBecauseICan · 09/11/2020 22:48

Ooh I love this post Smile I was wondering which board games to get the kids for Christmas and you’ve given me some great ideas. browses amazon

brackengirl · 09/11/2020 23:07

We love board games in our family and close group of friends- favourites include lots of ones already mentioned and also Tikal, Zooloretto and Splendor.

During the first lockdown DH discovered the website Yucata; it's free and has a huge range of games to play, you can play random people or send a personal invitation to just play with friends. We tend to set up a zoom call and play with friends and it's brilliant. Games we've enjoyed are Castles of Burgundy- my number one favourite, Stone Age, Snowdonia, the Voyages of Marco Polo and St Petersburg. Although I love a real board, playing online means you don't have any set up and it counts your points for you plus it lets you try lots of new games for free before you commit to buying them. I can't recommend it enough!

Pamelaaaaa · 09/11/2020 23:16

Another board game fan with family who don't play very often. I play ticket to ride, risk and carcassonne online. Only thing is, that then means family want to play with me even less as there's very little chance of anything other than a thrashing and I get bored with the pace of real life games after playing with a computer moving etc for you and speeding the game up.

6 year old is getting the hang of adult games now so give it a couple more years and hopefully she'll give me a run for my money

HuckfromScandal · 10/11/2020 08:17

Hey guys

Late to this party, but any recommendations of board games for just 2 of us?
We used to play a lot of cards, but I got very bored of being consistently beaten, but I do miss sitting at the table, drinking wine and listening to music playing a game,

But there is only 2 of us.

HikerBiker · 10/11/2020 11:12

We’ve recently got a couple of games called Bandido and Ravine. They’re both ‘collaborative’ rather than competitive.

Also Exploding Kittens is a really fun card game.

My 6 year old loves them all.
(You can play them all with 2+ players.)

HikerBiker · 10/11/2020 11:17

Exploding Kittens is good for 2 adults. It’s a card game, and gets better and more complex the more you play it.

ShinyPie · 10/11/2020 13:37

Hanamikoji and Splendor are my favourite games to play 2 player. Both easy to learn (there are some great tutorial videos on YouTube).

HuckfromScandal · 11/11/2020 07:32

Thanks, very much appreciated, I bought my son exploding kittens a few years ago, may ask him to lend it back to me!

NaughtipussMaximus · 11/11/2020 07:38

I love them but I only have DH and DS to play with and neither of them are really into board games. Also since I was young I haven’t really been ‘allowed’ to play by friends and family because I take them too seriously - I want all the rules stuck to and no giving clues or ‘letting him have another go’ or cheating! Most people I have played with think that cheating is part of the fun, but to me it spoils the game.

withadivinebeatlesbaseline · 12/11/2020 16:41

I also recommend travelling man shop for games, huge range and really fast delivery. (And not Amazon) I have no personal interest in the shop!

Mimitoo · 12/11/2020 18:34

I love board games, enjoy the classics but have bought a few new ones for the family recently. For younger kids, Disney colour brain is a good choice- easy enough for younger children to play. My children also really love Burrito Burrito - not so much a board game, but a card game.
