Any women here who like board games?

So, I have a confession to make. Pandemic made me a board game addict. I always loved board games, but I haven't played them for a really long time. So when lockdown started I bought few to play with my six year old son and husband. Unfortunately, it turned out that I'm the only one in my house who really likes them, the two of them could happily never ever to play again.

I know there are solo games, but I like to play with other people. Luckily, my husband's best friend likes to play them, so I play when he comes along. I'm still gathering courage to play in the public board games playroom (and it is a little bit hard to find time with one year old).

So, any more like me? And important question - how do you persuade your family to play with you?

I love board games. I play Scrabble at least 3 times a week. I love Cluedo but don't get to play it. DH not too keen on board games luckily does like Scrabble. I'm reading this thread for new ones to play!

funtimefrank · 26/09/2020 09:43

We love them here too. We are also trying to get my mum to join in in a Sunday after lunch but she has limited patience. She likes dixit and betrayal though.

Can I recommend 5 tribes as a fairly short but very fun game (takes longer to set up than to play it seems). And dds are great fans of good old fashioned proper cluedo.

The internet goes "down"
The power goes "out"
Bribery- cook a phenomenal dessert and have an early dinner with plenty of time to have dessert and a game before bed.
Invite kids friends and parents over for a game night.
Ask for a new "family" game for birthday/ mother's day/ Christmas. Insist that teaching you how to play it and having a game (or 4) with you is part of the gift.
Have "game day" as a day each school holidays. We also have puzzle day and new book day too.

Lol. None of that will work on me! I hate the things and can't think of a more dull way to spend time. But if you love it then brilliant - but please don't try and force people like me to play.

wigglerose · 26/09/2020 09:47

My husband is a board game addict. I like them, but slightly less. I need to be in the right mood and not knackered, which is hard considering I'm pregnant.

ArthurMorgan · 26/09/2020 09:47

I love board games! My DD and DP do not though, we very very rarely play any and that makes me sad 😅

TakeMeToYourLiar · 26/09/2020 11:26

I really want castles of king Ludwig but my cupboard is full and I rarely get chance to play games I like how!

Mol1628 · 26/09/2020 11:27

@BelfastSmile yes! Potions and charms expansion! Can’t wait !

Frappuccinofan · 26/09/2020 11:30

The only game I like is monopoly but I wouldn’t go out of my way to play it. It reminds me of my uni days!

I know this isn’t the same, but most board games have apps where you can play online against real people, or even just against the AI. So you’ll still get (somewhat) of your board-game fix

yellowmaoampinball · 26/09/2020 11:32

I love board games and card games but also have nobody in my family to play with as they all dislike them despite (or because of?!) me trying to indoctrinate them from a young age. I used to childmind and the kids I worked with loved playing them. I miss that.

My husband does like puzzles so we have started regularly getting a puzzle to complete which is nice. I also have a niece who loves them but we're going into lockdown this weekend so no idea when I'll see her next Sad

TheFlyingAspidistra · 26/09/2020 11:37

If you like all of those, you might like 7 wonders - no board though so a bit more like Dragonwood.

BelfastSmile · 26/09/2020 12:18

Various people on Board Game Geek have been playing with friends on Zoom, and it seems to work ok. You generally need to both have a copy of the game (depending on which game it is), and then one person is the "master" board. It works better for some games than others, obviously!

Pandemic is great, Pandemic Legacy is even better! DH and I played it together. Took ages to set up but very well worth it...so many plot twists. We’ve been saving Pandemic Legacy 2 for the gloomy winter months ahead Smile The board game cafe we used to go to makes a mean chai latte which we’re trying to replicate at home.

I rarely bother with reading the instructions first, instead preferring to watch a YouTube ‘how to play’ video. Then I’ll check the instructions. Works out less stressful that way.
My favourite game of all time is probably Istanbul. So fun but tactical too.

Forbidden Dessert is a slightly tougher version of Forbidden Island. Also great as part of a team of bickering friends.

Wotsitsarecheesy · 26/09/2020 12:27

7 wonders is an excellent game. we play it often. Another non-board game to try is Avalon the Resistance. Its a 'talking' game based on King Arthur where you try go on quests and try to work out who is good and who is bad. Great for a group of 5+ but better with more people. if youve tried werewolf online it's a bit like that, but better.

We also like lots of the games others have mentioned. Noone has mentioned Caveman yet. That was an excellent but I think obscure find. You are all cavemen on an island with dinosaurs. You win by either researching technologies (e.g. fire) or by growing your tribe to get 8 people. And all the time beware of the wandering dinosaurs. My kids loved it from around age 8 or 9.

To find new games, I like the youtube reviews by the Shut Up & Sit Down guys. They give a great feel for the games as well as being entertaining reviewers.

Kolsch · 26/09/2020 12:29

Me. I love them.
The first thing that comes out of the cupboard when my grandkids visit is the board games and sweets.
I don't mind what game it is, although I'm partial to hungry hippo's.

Can anyone recommend good board games for 2 people? Losing battle getting anyone else to join in...

These are some (exclusively) 2 player board games that we enjoy:

Targi
Lost Cities
Jaipur
The King and the Assassins

I mentioned Patchwork above; it's a 2-player game which DH and I love. I enjoy patchwork & quilting as a hobby, so spied the game and was interested... DH played as well, to humour me, and then ended up enjoying it even more than I did! You don't need to know anything about sewing to play it!

7 Wonders Duel is another one we enjoy. You have to build a city with different tradespeople and things in it, and collect wood etc to create wonders. It's a modified version of 7 Wonders; people who've played both say it's fairly similar.

There's also a 2-player game in the Hogwarts Battle range that's been mentioned above - can't remember what it's called, but I've seen good reviews of it.

Board Game Geek is a good site to ask for recommendations, though you can end up being a bit overwhelmed!

Banoffeecoffee · 26/09/2020 12:55

Board game fan here too. Most recent one was Everdell which was really good and can be 1-4 players. Jackbox games and online escape rooms have kept us going over the last few months - can be played over Skype etc with multiple households.

Mol1628 · 26/09/2020 13:01

Yes we have the two player battle of hog warts too. It’s not a co op. But it’s very quick to set up and play lasting about half an hour.

GrouchingTiggerHiddenSomething · 26/09/2020 13:01

For two players Patchwork is very good. We have recently got The Fox in the Forest Duet which is a cooperative two player game (I think the original is also two players but not coop). DH and I regularly play Hanabi or Codenames Duet (both cooperative). His favourite game is King of Tokyo but we usually rope the kids in to play that one with us.

DD and I both love coop games - Hogwarts Battle (which has been mentioned already several times) but also Burgle Bros, Big Book of Madness, Castle Panic, Magic Maze, Mysterium (though you need a few players for that).

I really love the Unlock! series of puzzle/escape room games. We have played them all! I also really like Lanterns, Takenoko and Rummikub.

DS is a big fan of Quacks of Quedlinburg, Villainous, Smash Up, Clank, Exploding Kittens, Munchkin, Kill Dr Lucky etc etc! He has also recently got into playing Dominion online.

We are a big board gaming family. There are several board games on my Christmas list!

Mol1628 · 26/09/2020 13:06

Patchwork is good! We also have the two player version of blokus which is good for kids and adults.

ExtenuatingCircumstances · 26/09/2020 13:16

Me too Op.
But it does depend on what we play - I’m not a good loser and we had to get rid of one game (Buccaneer) because I kept losing (I swear the family ganged up and picked on me).
I can’t play Monopoly either - for some reason I have terrible luck when playing compared to others. Bit of a theme developing here 😀
We like Ticket to Ride, Escape from Colditz and Risk. DS2 loves Axis and Allies.

Thelnebriati · 26/09/2020 13:20

We like Upwords, backgammon and Othello/Reversi. I never win Reversi so have to be a good sport about it.

maddening · 26/09/2020 13:22

Labrynth is excellent and one your ds might really enjoy

Juniperandrage · 26/09/2020 13:24

Everdell looks amazing but its so expensive!
