Any women here who like board games?

So, I have a confession to make. Pandemic made me a board game addict. I always loved board games, but I haven't played them for a really long time. So when lockdown started I bought few to play with my six year old son and husband. Unfortunately, it turned out that I'm the only one in my house who really likes them, the two of them could happily never ever to play again.

I know there are solo games, but I like to play with other people. Luckily, my husband's best friend likes to play them, so I play when he comes along. I'm still gathering courage to play in the public board games playroom (and it is a little bit hard to find time with one year old).

So, any more like me? And important question - how do you persuade your family to play with you?

Love this thread

oreshina · 26/09/2020 19:22

I love scrabble but nobody can ever beat me!

Companion42 · 26/09/2020 19:27

I love board games! I used to go to a board game club once a week before Covid as well as occasional trips to our local game cafe and meet ups with a few friends who play.

I'd love recommendations for good one player games though, as I currently can't play as much as I'd like

GrouchingTiggerHiddenSomething · 26/09/2020 19:57

For Solo play we have a large selection of the ThinkFun games (Rush Hour etc) which are fun if you like solving puzzles. We also have Friday and Finished! and One Deck Dungeon which are designed as single player games (DS doesn't like One Deck Dungeon - too much dice rolling, but he likes the other two.)

JalapenoDave · 26/09/2020 20:00

Yes! Love board games, my favourite being Logo and Articulate Smile

QueenOfCatan · 26/09/2020 20:03

We love board games, wingspan is my absolute favourite at the moment but I love a bit of splendor, unearth, carcassonne or Catan. Power grid is fun too, and Union Pacific. Too many games and too little time!

My husband bought wingspan for my birthday and we love it 😁

Those who've mentioned Pandemic Legacy - is it one where the game "progresses" as you play? So you complete "levels"? Is it possible to go back to level 1 once you've finished them all?
Yes it’s a game that progresses and changes permanently - you modify the actual game board as you advance, create new characters (and potentially lose old ones), and work your way through the plot. Instead of levels there are 12 ‘months’ from January to December. You can have up to two attempts for each month, but if you still don’t achieve that month’s objectives, you move on to the next one.

You can’t really go back to January after you’ve completed the game. It’ll have been irrevocably altered. So it has finite plays but still well worth the cost.

MachiKoro · 26/09/2020 22:59

Can't believe only one poster mentioned Scythe! It's my favourite game.
Machi Koro (obviously)
Takenoko
Escape From Aliens In Outer Space
Voluspa
Star Realms (ok, it's card game not board game)
Dominion
7 Wonders
And good old Ticket To Ride

terrelontane · 26/09/2020 23:53

I buy really pretty ones that look good when left out, so they’re there and it’s easier to persuade DH to play a quick game than if we had to take a game out of a box etc.
At the moment I’ve got Zertz out on the coffee table and a lovely wooden version of Senet on the sideboard.

scissy · 26/09/2020 23:59

@redolent we played Pandemic Legacy season 1 as a group of 4 over 2 YEARS! Trouble was, it was our gaming group and trying to schedule games proved difficult, plus towards the end we all started to get a bit bored of it Blush.
Shame really, as I used to live Pandemic (We have the original with the expansion set). But our experience playing Legacy means none of us want to go near it again for a LONG while.
I've enjoyed reading this thread though, we have a big collection of games, a lot of which are mentioned here although there are new ones that I've made a note of for our wish list Smile

Another board game fan here and we seem to have passed it on to our DD 24.

For the past few years our New Years eve is nice dinner followed by board games until midnight. Last year we bought Pandemic! Can't believe we did that! We found it ridiculously difficult anyway .

Latest new game is Mysterium which I highly recommend. A bit like Cluedo but with added atmosphere, Great art work and a very well designed game.

BrieAndChilli · 27/09/2020 14:15

We have pandemic. What’s the best expansion pack to get. Kids age 8,12 and 13 also like playing it.

poorremus · 27/09/2020 21:53

We bought Pandemic a couple of Christmases ago - but really didn't like it. We discovered that we don't really like collaborating as a family - we'd rather compete GrinGrin

We love the expansion with the terrorist. We jave only beaten the terrorist once so far (and we can regularly beat 6 epidemics with the worst players- no scientist or medic!) The lab is good but much harder.
opinionatedfreak · 27/09/2020 23:45

I love a board game. Ticket to Ride is my favourite but I’ll play most stuff.

I’ve been playing online either via app (carcassonne/ ticket to ride/potions explosion) or via board game arena. If you have no one to play with board game arena is ace.

I’m lucky I have lots of gamer friends and have got some of my friends’ children hooked too. It’s been a nice way to interact: voice call open and playing the game online. I’ve had quite decent chats with a usually reticent tween this way too - I think the lack of face to face makes it easier for her.

Most of them are at the age where I’m losing my cool aunt credentials and it’s good to be able to do a joint activity.

Haha that’s completely understandable. Momentum is key! It just DH and me and we played the last three ‘months’ over the course of a weekend (Blush) so it unfolded very quickly for us. Baby nap times were critical to finishing!

LakeToba · 28/09/2020 00:23

Love many that have been mentioned and excited to research many that I’m not familiar with. Don’t think anyone has mentioned Flamme Rouge? It’s fab! Enjoyed a ‘Tour’ this summer with children ranging from 6 - 14. Links in with an app to keep track of scores. Really recommend.

RoseMartha · 28/09/2020 00:32

Yes but my teen dc are not particularly keen , they will oblige occasionally.

1000umbrellas · 28/09/2020 00:57

They're mainly a holiday thing in our family but I'd love to do them more. We've had some epic games of Ticket to Ride and Power Grid but it does take 100,000 years to explain the rules. I'm going to try pp's suggestion to watch Youtube videos instead.

DCs go through phases with them, they like Upwords (but not Scrabble for some reason) Boggle and I just got them Throw Throw Burrito (made by the Exploding Kittens people) which they mainly love because you spend a lot of time chucking squishy burritos at each other.

lyralalala · 28/09/2020 03:26

I got my non-enthusiastic kids into board games by playing Smart Ass. First they giggled at the name and secondly it involves shouting out answers so they like that. Works better in a bigger group though.

We also play Logo, 5 second rule and Upwords.

BelfastSmile · 06/11/2020 23:10
@BelfastSmile yes! Potions and charms expansion! Can’t wait !
@Mol1628 have you got the expansion yet? We got ours during the week, and we've played it a couple of evenings already, and really enjoyed it. Only got to Pack 2 though, and been beaten twice.

DarkMintChocolate · 06/11/2020 23:53

I used to play games in my 20s with a group of gamers:

Kingmaker
1829
Go
Mancala
Shoji (Japanese chess)
Chinese Chess
Octagonal Chess
3 D chess
Nim
Hare and Tortoise
Cul de Sac
Dungeons and Dragons
Mahjong
Cribbage
Backgammon
Reversi or Othello
Whist
Scrabble
There were other games, made by Avalon Hill and another manufacturer, I can’t remember their names.

Now DH and I play Scrabble or Upwords; DC like Yahtzee, Connect 4 and Boggle. I often play games online - like Township, Candy Crush for several years, until I feel like a change!
