Any women here who like board games?

So, I have a confession to make. Pandemic made me a board game addict. I always loved board games, but I haven't played them for a really long time. So when lockdown started I bought few to play with my six year old son and husband. Unfortunately, it turned out that I'm the only one in my house who really likes them, the two of them could happily never ever to play again.

I know there are solo games, but I like to play with other people. Luckily, my husband's best friend likes to play them, so I play when he comes along. I'm still gathering courage to play in the public board games playroom (and it is a little bit hard to find time with one year old).

So, any more like me? And important question - how do you persuade your family to play with you?

Dice Forge is a good one. And Fungi

ScribblyGum · 26/09/2020 13:45

Big board gamers here too. This year, since lock down I’ve found playing some of the more complex lengthy games too much. I just didn’t have the headspace for long-game tactics.
Thankfully Coup and Love letter (card games not board games but still in the spirit of the thread) have kept my love for playing games alive.

And then dh and dd1 MADE me play Wingspan and I’m so glad they did. Absolutely gorgeous game and just lovely to play. We bought the European birds expansion pack and it’s definitely my favourite game this year.

Pandemic has felt too close to the bone, but I think Pandemic Legacy Season 3 is coming out (?out already) so that will be dh’s Christmas present sorted.

Yeah but only easy ones such as
Snakes and ladders
Guess who
The house that Jack built ( Come on I’m only 44 for heavens sake )🤣🤣🤣🤣

Mol1628 · 26/09/2020 14:42

@ScribblyGum We have wingspan but I haven’t played with OH yet. He keeps suggesting it but I agree, headspace is a big issue sometimes isn’t it!

ScribblyGum · 26/09/2020 15:16

@Mol1628 I couldn’t bear the thought of sitting down to learn a whole lot of new rules! I’d set it up and then couldn’t be arsed to play.
Glad I did in the end as it’s the sort of game I need right now. Lovely to look at and no one takes or destroys the lovely bird sanctuary you build Grin

ShortColdandGrey · 26/09/2020 15:27

We have been playing escape room puzzle games during lock down. It is our fortnightly date night. Can take a while on some of the puzzles after a couple grasses of wine Grin.

ShortColdandGrey · 26/09/2020 15:28

glasses * not grasses.

SabrinaThwaite · 26/09/2020 15:31

Might have to try turning off the electric and lighting some candles to recreate my Winter of Discontent childhood playing Monopoly, Newmarket and cribbage.

MJMG2015 · 26/09/2020 15:39

Oh. You finally find your tribe...and there's a bloody pandemic going on!

If there wasn't I'd love to organise an MN Games weekend!

Norightorwronganswer · 26/09/2020 15:48

I would love to get ‘into’ games.

We got Cluedo last Christmas and we all love it but struggle to find the time to sit down with it. We also don’t really have anywhere to play!

ShinyPie · 26/09/2020 16:00

I've been maintaining a modest collection of board games for over a decade (still miniscule compared to the vast libraries I see on community groups).

I used to meet up with a group of 4-7 friends once a month, unfortunately, Covid-related restrictions has put a stop to that. DH will play with me, but tends to prefer simple and short games (Hanamikoji, Carcassonne, Love Letter). Marathon or Campaign games are a bit of a no go currently. I'd love to try something like Twilight Imperium or Gloomhaven!

I'd love to play with people outside my circle. Last time I went to my local FLGS hoping to join one of the tables, I was a bit intimidated by the sea of bearded white guys who seemed a bit 'off' with my presence. This was a few years ago, so it may have changed since then!

TheClawww · 26/09/2020 16:02

Reading with interest as OH's main hobby is board games and I personally could take them or leave them; which I know makes me a great disappointment to him.

Would love to either be more interested myself, or at least find some people he can play with.

BrieAndChilli · 26/09/2020 16:09

I think a lot of the games you mentioned are probably a bit too old for the 6 year old. Maybe try some younger games to get him into them and gradually work your way up to the others?

Mine are a bit older now but things like banana grams, exploding kittens, Lego board games, dinosaur monopoly, the London board game, Scotland Yard, etc might be more suitable.

thisisnotwhatisignedupfor · 26/09/2020 16:13

I love board games, unfortunately our local cafe hasn't survived lockdown so really good to see some suggestions.
Can the people mentioning escape room games give me some info as I like to give that a go.

SouterSally · 26/09/2020 16:18

Dont think Sequence has been mentioned yet, we love this (and Im the least competitive person to be playing with), bought as a Christmas present from DH last year.

RiveterRosie · 26/09/2020 16:23

I love board games and card games - I used to be a really good Rummy player. Sadly I don't know anyone else who enjoys this sort of thing and haven't played in years.

LorW · 26/09/2020 16:24

Me and my DH love board games and have quite an extensive collection, there’s a lot more to board games than monopoly 😂

We have things like mansions of madness, Arkham horror, time stories, scythe, wingspan etc etc and love them, when it’s Christmas/birthdays we both buy games to add to our collection 😁

BikeRunSki · 26/09/2020 16:28

Me!

Labyrinth, Qwirkle, Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride Europe are all popular with me and the DC.

EternalOptimist7 · 26/09/2020 16:33

I love board games & used to have cheap nights in with my mates but DH & DD11 not so keen. DD will play every so often.

GrouchingTiggerHiddenSomething · 26/09/2020 16:44

The Unlock! series by Space Cowboys can be purchased in sets of three (about £25) or sometimes individually (about £11 each I think). Each one is a set of cards and there is an app as well (free to download). You can do them with a timer or turn the timer off if it's a bit stressful. The advantage of them is that you can pass them onto a friend once you have played as they are not destroyed in any way. This means you can purchase them second hand (there are some on ebay) and it will be completely fine (as long as no cards are missing!) They do vary a bit in difficulty and quality (a couple of the early ones are not so great) but I highly recommend the series.

The Deckscape series is similar (no app though) but I've only played a couple of those. The Exit the Game series is very popular but they usually contain components which get damaged or destroyed in some way (unless you are very careful) so not able to be passed on after use.

burblish · 26/09/2020 16:47

DH will play occasionally as long as it’s a board game without a cards element (card games, without fail, totally flummox him!). I love card games and play some with DC11 but others are too complicated for him. Co-operative games are a big hit with us. Some of the games we really enjoy include: Labyrinth, Codenames Duet, Santorini, Pandemic, Quadropolis, Sushi Go, Forbidden Island, Ghost Fighting Treasure Hunters, the Unlock! games, Rummikub, Rhino Hero, Bandido. I play Cluedo on my phone as I’m the only one who likes it. With younger DC, co-op games that are great for little ones that they like to play include Outfoxed, Orchard and Hoot Owl Hoot - your 6 year old might be a bit too old for some of those, though.

BelfastSmile · 26/09/2020 16:56

Those who've mentioned Pandemic Legacy - is it one where the game "progresses" as you play? So you complete "levels"? Is it possible to go back to level 1 once you've finished them all?

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 26/09/2020 16:57

I love board games.
Currently we are into Photosynthesis, quadropolis, flashpoint as well as some mentioned upthread.
I just found a 2 player version of risk which has scenarios you set up and is quite enjoyable as a 2 player.
We're planning to play Escape from Colditz tonight because it's the only one dp will play.

BexR · 26/09/2020 17:01

Me! But like others I have noone to play with :-(

I like getting random board games from ebay. Hoping to steer DC into liking them but not got the attention span at the minute.

I'm getting some good tips from this thread, thanks everyone!

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 26/09/2020 17:06

I worry about my dc growing out of them because dp won't play.
(Other than escape from colditz).

I would happily attend MN board game meet ups.

I find the general ones are a bit testosteroney and don't tend to fancy them.

I've been playing tabletop simulator a bit.
Labyrinth on there is pretty good.
