To think you can just skip a period?

GoldfishParade · 24/09/2020 21:03

I've just realised I didnt get my period this month. It was supposed to have come two weeks ago I think. At the moment I am struggling with massive debilitating panic attacks and am highly stressed and anxious. I have never skipped a period before.
YANBU = Stress can make you skip a period
YABU = That's unlikely

It happens, I wouldn't worry about it. Stress - anxiety, change, all sorts of things affect our cycles. As long as you know you cannot be pregnant, forget it.

mynameiscalypso · 24/09/2020 21:06

It's totally a thing - it happens to me whenever I get tired/stressed/run down. It's not the period itself per se but the fact that the stress etc means you don't ovulate therefore your period never arrives. Normally it just catches up at some point.

Tunnocks34 · 24/09/2020 21:07

It’s Never happened to me But it’s pretty coming I think

Tunnocks34 · 24/09/2020 21:07

*common

UnaMujer · 24/09/2020 21:10

It’s not uncommon. I’ve missed periods when going through extremely stressful times.

LavenderSatin · 24/09/2020 21:11

It has happened to me before! Stress can raise your prolactin levels. That’s the hormone that aids milk production for breastfeeding, so it can impact on your menstrual cycles. That’s why my doctor told me when it happened to me. It’s normal and isn’t anything to be worried about.

BertieBotts · 24/09/2020 21:12

It definitely happens, but in any case you should check for pregnancy if you've had sex, it's better to know.

guineapig1 · 24/09/2020 21:12

Totally a thing especially if you’ve been very stressed, busy or rundown. Sil is a gp and reassure me that it’s very normal.

RedCatBlueCat · 24/09/2020 21:13

Stress can delay my period.
I'd take a pregnancy test (if there is only the slightest chance), and then forget about it - but never go anywhere without some towels/tampons just incase you are caught by surprise.

HyaluronicHippo · 24/09/2020 21:13

It can happen.

Is there zero possibility of pregnancy?

MomToTwoBabas · 24/09/2020 21:15

Stress can make you skip a period. You answered the question in your post so this is pointless.

Fatted · 24/09/2020 21:15

Stress definitely can make you miss a period.

Also what age are you? Mine started going to pot around 37. I can either have one every fortnight or one every two months. There is no in-between! I'm only 40.

Boulshired · 24/09/2020 21:16

I always think the physical effects of conditions such as anxiety are not really appreciated. Lack of sleep, change of diet, the list would be endless. Are you eating healthy/ enough?

Kakiweewee · 24/09/2020 21:18

Mine are irregular due to a mixture of stress/anxiety and being overweight. I've nearly lost 5st and they are beginning to get a little heavier and a little more regular.

princessbananahammock252 · 24/09/2020 21:21

It can absolutely happen! I skipped periods for 3 consecutive months last year. I don't particularly remember being stressed; it was just super random. I thought maybe I was peri menopausal but that was ruled out with hormone tests! And now I'm pregnant, so totally random that I missed 3 back to back periods!

smileyplant · 24/09/2020 21:22

Yes stress can definitely make you skip/miss periods. When I started my first proper job I didn't have one for about 12 weeks I was so stressed! I knew I wasn't pregnant so just put it down to one of those excellent quirks we have to deal with as women!

FippertyGibbett · 24/09/2020 21:40

Yes. I didn’t have a period for 8 months when I was at the end of my degree.

Pukkatea · 24/09/2020 21:46

I skipped my period for the first time recently, I'm in my early 30s. No observable reason, wasn't any more stressed than usual and no other illnesses, it just didn't turn up one month.

Aquamarine1029 · 24/09/2020 22:02

How old are you?

Lolwhat · 24/09/2020 23:07

Stress made me not have one for 2 months, I was only 19 and my mum had to buy me pregnancy tests, always negative and then I had the worst period of my life, it’s only happened once in 10 years, was really odd but normal

laudete · 24/09/2020 23:10

Yes, but I've always had some irregularity. I'd be slightly concerned if it's never happened before.

theamplifier · 24/09/2020 23:18

I missed three periods earlier this year, they just stopped. In the end I spoke to a GP who said it's best to try and bring it on with medication, so I took a course of provera and since then it's been back to normal.

I put it down to anxiety as I was stressed over Covid.

GoldfishParade · 24/09/2020 23:46

Thank you that's quite reassuring! Google says it can happen but I wanted to gauge how common it was - seems fairly common.

I'm 33.

I skipped 4 this year has never happened before I put it down to stress I took many pregnancy tests even though I knew it was highly unlikely then it just came back like normal Hmm

CheeseAndOnionIcecream · 25/09/2020 00:51

When I used to have periods in the dim and distant past I can remember at least 3 occasions (in my late 20s/early 30s) when I completely missed a period due to stress or a major upset.
