AIBU to think silicon could end the toilet brush debate once and for all?

I was bought up in a No Brush household. I have no idea how the toilet got clean. Bodily functions of all kinds were unmentionable.

Fast-forward to having three children, and faced with the reality of wiping their shit off the toilet bowl (and, now they are old enough, asking them to reliably wipe their shit off the toilet bowl) I was forced to revisit my deeply held distaste for the toilet brush. I gave in, bought a couple, and yes, they rapidly became every bit as revolting as you would expect. But what to do?

Enter the silicon toilet brush! Effective, never get dirty, and somehow (I don't know how) you never, ever end up with poo water in the holder. I got mine from Amazon, they were only £6.99 and they seem to last forever.

Could the silicon toilet brush finally bridge the divide between two of mumsnet's longest standing factions?

I use a toilet brush for scrubbing the loo, but never, ever for cleaning shit stains. I just put wet toilet paper on the stains, next time its flushed it just washes away, then i scrub and bleach it. I like the sound of the silicon brushes though, will look them up.

Elephantday82 · 24/09/2020 20:33

I put silicone into the search on amazon and first thing in the lust is toilet brush 😂😂

There's going to be some very confused Amazon staff tonight Grin

@Ginkypig

You do, you carry a grave responsibility of the mental wellbeing of a thousand women and for the cleanliness of a thousand toilets.

We have put our trust in you, You have stepped forward to be exalted as the toilet brush guru but will you prove yourself worthy of your new position and the trust that has been placed in you?
I'm sure time will tell.

Cue heavily emotional closing scene music Grin

Oh god! The pressure!

I hope everyone comes back with updates on their new brushes! Although if the reviews aren't positive I could be heading for my first ever name change...

We had a few days away this summer and our cottage had a fab Joseph Joseph drainer for the sink. It was a bit pricey but worth it. We then discovered the silicon toilet brush, my DH hates the tradition ones, can definitely recommend the Joseph Joseph collection. We did have a chuckle that lockdown/restrictions had made us get all excited about kitchen/bathroom accessories.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 24/09/2020 22:12

So I’ve been researching and I want this one...
www.josephjoseph.com/collections/toilet-brushes/products/easystore-plus-standing-toilet-paper-holder?variant=31897384779848

For YEARS the loo roll in the en-suite has just been sat on the radiator as we’ve never found the “right” holder....

But.... £80! ...... DH isn’t keen...........

NoMoreMrNiceGaius · 24/09/2020 22:17

I have the Joseph Joseph flex plus with a slot at the back to hide the toilet cleaner/bleach. I absolutely love it, it is my precious! I have it for all the toilets and even have an extra one in case one of them is damaged and it's discontinued.

It pretty much never gets dirty, once a month, or whenever I feel like it, I spray it and the holder with bleach then give it a good hot rinse in the shower. But in 4 years I have never seen anything stuck to it, not a speck. It was very expensive to get 4 of them but it was worth every cent.

SayWhatTheWhatNow · 24/09/2020 22:18

Still no

MissMarplesHandbag · 24/09/2020 22:51

@cheeseismydownfall - yes, we will all report back and then turn this thread into a review thread!

Bush pack arrived today. These were in a pack of three for £15 odds at Amazon (they had 30%off yesterday!).
They come with a holder which I won't be using, but you can see from the pictures it has a kind of ventilation system at the bottom to air the brush. It can also be wall mountable and comes with a stick tab thing at the back (pictured). The brushes themselves seem very sturdy, a good weight, with a screw on silicone head. The handle is made from really sturdy plastic, which I have switched to from stainless steel which always rusts and ends up looking dirty. Like the fact that the silicone head is dark grey. These should be pretty easy to wash. For anyone interested the Amazon link is:

Hope that worked!

How exciting! That looks pretty much identical to the ones I have.

Skid marks above the water line can eliminated by pouring a jug of hot water over them followed by bleach. Under the water mark just some bleach in the water will get rid of them.

Limescale and general grot can be eliminated by putting a few denture cleaning tablets in the pan overnight.

I very rarely scrub.

cheeseismydownfall · 25/09/2020 15:15

ultimatecougar, I don't like overusing bleach, and this approach certainly isn't something could have asked my youngest to do aged 7 (which is the age when I started asking my DC to take responsibility for themselves). Whereas they are all able to safely wield a silicon brush!

StillAlive76 · 25/09/2020 15:25

But who would honestly be bothered traipsing to the kettle etc to get hot water every time they use the loo? What if someone was waiting outside to use it straight after you? How embarrassing would that be, not being able to clean the toilet and then having to get them to wait while you get your hot water and bleach? I'm still firmly in the "loo brush in every toilet" camp!

Belledan1 · 25/09/2020 15:30

I had a bit row with DH today. I said thats smelly. Cld smell in hall i said open window. he said i have and put cleaner down loo. He had but not cleaned the marks!!! Not feeling it today

wink1970 · 25/09/2020 15:33

@StillAlive76 they are the ones I have: I can testify to their effectiveness and lack of poo-sticking, they don't rust (so don't look nasty) and don't smell.

I think I'd rather leave the loo roll on the radiator, at that price. And there's the chance of warm paper, not cold, on your bum.
letmethinkaboutitfornow · 25/09/2020 19:02

£3.99 from Lidl - it’s brilliant! It stays clean (well, if you know how to use them 🤷🏻‍♀️)

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 25/09/2020 19:59

I am not sure whether I am more horrified by the £1,200 price tag on that Harrods loo brush, or the fact that there is a spelling error/typo in the advert...

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 25/09/2020 20:02

Haha @MulticolourMophead - our loo roll lives on top of the pack. When it's at floor level, it's time to go shopping (& possibly bemoan our lack of forward planning, these days!)

I've just ordered 1 brush for each loo - a round one, & a flat one. For research purposes, obviously.

ProperVexed · 26/09/2020 19:03

Silicon brush has arrived...thanks be to Amazon Prime. I am nor stalking my toilets looking for nastiness to scrub.
