AIBU to think silicon could end the toilet brush debate once and for all?

I was bought up in a No Brush household. I have no idea how the toilet got clean. Bodily functions of all kinds were unmentionable.

Fast-forward to having three children, and faced with the reality of wiping their shit off the toilet bowl (and, now they are old enough, asking them to reliably wipe their shit off the toilet bowl) I was forced to revisit my deeply held distaste for the toilet brush. I gave in, bought a couple, and yes, they rapidly became every bit as revolting as you would expect. But what to do?

Enter the silicon toilet brush! Effective, never get dirty, and somehow (I don't know how) you never, ever end up with poo water in the holder. I got mine from Amazon, they were only £6.99 and they seem to last forever.

Could the silicon toilet brush finally bridge the divide between two of mumsnet's longest standing factions?

I have seen these and been sadly and a bit weirdly extremely interested in whether they are as magical as they appear to be.

Gazelda · 24/09/2020 14:58

I first saw these at the Ideal Home Show in London a couple of years ago. I wanted to buy one but DH refused to get on the tube/train with me if I had a big brush under my arm.
I ordered a Joseph one online and never told DH that it cost more than £20. It's so beautiful!

And yes, it does things a regular toilet brush cannot. Elegantly.
But people who can't face having a brush on display in their toilet will have to knit a long-skirted dolly to hide it.

silentpool · 24/09/2020 14:59

How do you clean it?

nevertrustaherdofcows · 24/09/2020 15:00

is there a link? I am massively over-invested in this development

N0tfinished · 24/09/2020 15:02

I got one. It is good and cleaner than the old type, but I do think the old type are more effective at actually cleaning. Especially stains of the dried on variety. Deep joy

PrincessConsuelaBananahamm0ck · 24/09/2020 15:03

I'm very interested too as always end up just bleaching my families shit off the toilet bowl. Can't stand brushes and the resulting poo water.

magicstar1 · 24/09/2020 15:06

I’ve had a one for a few years now ...stays clean and doesn’t leave any mess. I’d never go back to a normal brush.

minipie · 24/09/2020 15:10

How do they never get dirty? They’re still brushing poo off the loo...?
Also how come no poo water, surely they still get wet?

Watching with way too much interest.

Proudboomer · 24/09/2020 15:10

I have a silIcon loo knife ( flat no bristles) and it is useless at cleaning the loo. But it comes into its own if someone does a trucker sized floater that refuses to flush as you can sort of break it up with the edge of the brush.

ilovebedtimestories · 24/09/2020 15:12

Is it basically a spatula for poo? I’m picturing scraping down a mixing bowl ...

raddledoldmisanthropist · 24/09/2020 15:13

They are made of very non-polar material with a low affinity for water. They physically scrape off the poo but the water and the water-soluble excrement can't stick. Like when oil and water are mixed but then separate.

Links, people! We want links to the good brushes!

Me too! Please share recommendations, especially that Joseph one @Gazelda - beautiful and elegant?? I'm soldGrin
GreenLeafTurnip · 24/09/2020 15:16

How do people get POO water in the holder? Don't you rinse it with toilet water after flushing the dirty water away? I've never understood how a toilet can get that dirty in the first place though.

Proudboomer · 24/09/2020 15:17

Yes but bigger with a longer handle. Pretty useless for cleaning but does break up a large log quite well without you having to get to near it😀
Allywill · 24/09/2020 15:18

we have both the spatula type and the spikes one. the one with spikes is better - it washes clean in the loo flush as it does not have nylon bristles to hold the poo crumbs 🤢happy with mine.

This is what I’ve got and agree - definitely better and cleaner than normal loo brush!

toomanyspiderplants · 24/09/2020 15:22

omg this could change my life!

My useless silicon brush
www.novauk.com/wcwunder/

Pretty revolting YouTube vid of a silicon brush. Watch at your own peril

JustAPassingFashion · 24/09/2020 15:24

I have one.
It changed my life.

So did my silicone kitchen floor broom and dustpan and brush.

I need to get out more, I know Grin

Katinthedoghouse · 24/09/2020 15:24

So, asking for a friend...There’s a bit too much choice, flex, lite and plus which one would you recommend?

VirginiaWolverine · 24/09/2020 15:25

Also, do they scrub off limescale.

markzuckerbergsgreytshirt · 24/09/2020 15:25

Why are members of your household/family leaving the loo in a shitty state and expecting you to clean it up after them anyway? Confused

A toilet brush is a toilet brush whatever they're made from; they're absolutely disgusting things. Ugh.

Phwooooar · 24/09/2020 15:27

I’ve just gone and bought one so it better be good!!
Also last week bought a Eufy robot hoover on the back of a MN chat - but it is BRILLIANT
Now I just need someone to recommend something a tad more exciting than a loo brush Wink

Mol1628 · 24/09/2020 15:29

I also need to know if these are good on lime scale. Very hard water area and that’s it’s main use. I do like the idea of them though.
