AIBU to think silicon could end the toilet brush debate once and for all?

I was bought up in a No Brush household. I have no idea how the toilet got clean. Bodily functions of all kinds were unmentionable.

Fast-forward to having three children, and faced with the reality of wiping their shit off the toilet bowl (and, now they are old enough, asking them to reliably wipe their shit off the toilet bowl) I was forced to revisit my deeply held distaste for the toilet brush. I gave in, bought a couple, and yes, they rapidly became every bit as revolting as you would expect. But what to do?

Enter the silicon toilet brush! Effective, never get dirty, and somehow (I don't know how) you never, ever end up with poo water in the holder. I got mine from Amazon, they were only £6.99 and they seem to last forever.

Could the silicon toilet brush finally bridge the divide between two of mumsnet's longest standing factions?

I justify my sponge and bleach use because the steam cleaner massively cuts down on cleaning products in general.

I did feel a pang of guilt on reading of your childhood OP because when DS went to uni he had to ring me to have the mystery of toilet cleaning explained.

Phwooooar · 24/09/2020 17:04

@Proudboomer
Re Eufys.... I also have a Roomba which was twice the price and half as good. The Eufy I have is skinny (unlike moi), frisky, eats loads, goes under the sofa (and comes out again), clears up all the hair from 2 dogs (one of whom is a Great Dane) and 5 cats Grin. Just get one and be done with it!

redlockscelt · 24/09/2020 17:06

We have one. It's crap.

PanamaPattie · 24/09/2020 17:08

My Joseph Joseph one still attracts poop and isn't any good for actually cleaning the toilet bowl. I've gone back to a traditional brush that actually does the job and I have left the JJ one out just for show - after I cleaned it with the traditional brush.

Phwooooar · 24/09/2020 17:09

@redlockscelt that makes me so sad - you must have a rogue one if it’s crap (like the content of this thread Grin)

Maddison12 · 24/09/2020 17:20

Once a week it get a full on scrub, it's where the washing up sponge goes on it's final mission before being binned

@WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo
I do this when the washing up sponge has reached the end of it's life and literally thought I was the only one who does it and I had made it upBlush😂

AlwaysLatte · 24/09/2020 17:23

I have 4 of these, they're brilliant. Stuff doesn't get trapped on them and to keep them clean after each use I use the clean toilet bowl after using to further clean the brush then leave it in soak in Ecover toilet cleaner for a few mins. Absolutely spotless.

@JustAPassingFashion

I have one. It changed my life.

So did my silicone kitchen floor broom and dustpan and brush.

I need to get out more, I know Grin

I'm with you 100%. I've given them to all my nearest & dearest. Particularly good for pet hair.
toomanyspiderplants · 24/09/2020 17:35

for those in hard water areas..you need citric acid to clear the limescale!

off now to buy a silicon bog brush

Proudboomer · 24/09/2020 17:49

@cheeseismydownfall

OP here!

These are the ones we have: ]]

I do agree that they are not as effective on dried on poo (they work eventually, but need a lot more vigorous scrubbing) but because the are so much less rank to use everyone seems a lot more willing to use them. I even gave the children (12, 10 and 8) a hands-on lesson using smears of toothpaste to simulate poo and it is now a pretty rare occurrence that one of them forgets.

They just don't get dirty. And it is super easy to wash off wet toilet paper if you make the rookie mistake of trying to use it while their is paper in the bowl.

Alas, though, I don't think they would be effective against limescale. For that I'd recommend a toilet pumice, super effective:

]]

Don't use them on glass though!!!

Well Iv bought it but I'm warning you if you have fed me inaccurate nae dangerous information then I'm coming after you for the entire monetary amount of £6.12 and if I have to I will take you all the way highest court in the land.

I will not be duped by unscrupulous toilet brush con people. I tell you I just won't!

I bought two of the Lakeland ones .
Cheaper than the Joseph brushes , nowhere near as pretty but very effective and easy clean

www.loogun.com/products/loogun

I see your silicone loobrush and raise you a loogun.
You spray a little jet of water on the stains, no touching of toilet bowl required. Unfortunately, doesn’t work so well on dried on stuff and the little water tank doesn’t hold much so if it’s empty the teenager doesn’t think to refill it 🙄

newtb · 24/09/2020 18:27

Household vinegar 12% will work on limescale. Leave in overnight and then give a good scrub with the toilet brush.

As to cleaning brushes, when loo is bleached, leave the brush soaking in the loo overnight.

cheeseismydownfall · 24/09/2020 19:13

@ginkypig OK I'm worried now! I'm suddenly feeling the burden of the collective mumsnet search for the elusive non-rank toilet brush on my shoulders! Grin

Just bought a pack of three Silicone brushes from Amazon that had a 30% voucher. Got the three for £15.39, pretty decent.
I'm changing to plastic handles now, as a)stainless steel ones always rust and end up looking dirty/poo like, even though it is rust stains, and b) they are now hidden in my side cupboard so not seen anyway.
Hopefully these will be the holy grail of loo brushes. Next day delivery on Prime. Woohoo! sadly looking forward to the delivery.

Soulstirring · 24/09/2020 19:21

Just use bleach?

dementedpixie · 24/09/2020 19:24

I have these ones

Ginkypig · 24/09/2020 19:30

You do, you carry a grave responsibility of the mental wellbeing of a thousand women and for the cleanliness of a thousand toilets.

We have put our trust in you, You have stepped forward to be exalted as the toilet brush guru but will you prove yourself worthy of your new position and the trust that has been placed in you?
I'm sure time will tell.

Cue heavily emotional closing scene music Grin

Wetweekend99 · 24/09/2020 19:34

I don't know why I have spent my evening reading about loo brushes but its been great... off to buy a silicone loo brush and toilet pumice

Coffeekisses · 24/09/2020 19:36

Pack of two?

barskits · 24/09/2020 19:47

I am oddly over-invested in this thread Grin

ProperVexed · 24/09/2020 20:17

I am a 🐑. I've followed the OP's link and bought one! I have 5 toilets so I shall try this one out....then perhaps purchase 4 more!
