To be completely embarrassed

I have no idea what happened in Tesco this morning and I am SO embarrassed. I used the self scanner and did a full weekly shop. There was one item that said it couldn't scan so I gave that to the assistant and she put it through. All was fine. I went to the car and started putting the shopping in when I heard someone say "excuse me, you didn't pay for your shopping" 🙈 It was the assistant who had clearly run out after me. She said it was all still up on the screen. The worrying bit is I have no idea what on earth happened. I remember selecting the card payment option and thinking I'll have to put my card in because it's over £45 but after that - nothing. I didn't notice that I didn't have a receipt or that it obviously didn't say transaction approved on the card machine. I have absolutely no memory between thinking I would have to put my card in, and pushing the trolley out of the self service area. I remember that because I said thank you to the assistant as I left. I remember exactly who I was walking behind going out and everything else after that.

I don't know whether it's something wrong with me, or whether my mind was just a elsewhere but I was so embarrassed having her run out to the car after me and having to go back in with the trolley. And after struggling to fit all the heavy bags into the car I had to take them all back out and take them back into Tesco. Aaargh.

Could you be menopausal? I once forgot to collect my children from school.😳🙄😂

LakieLady · 24/09/2020 15:15

It's easily done, OP.

A year or so ago, I almost drove off without paying for a tankfull of petrol. I was preoccupied about something, filled the car, put the nozzle back in its holder, put the petrol cap back on, opened the car door to get my handbag out, got in a drove off.

Thankfully, I only got as far as the thing that puts air in your tyres before I realised, but I was so embarrassed I almost Blush just remembering it.

To make things worse, the lady on the till lives along my road, She was fine about it and joked about knowing where I live, but that made it worse iykwim.

It happens quite often, she told me.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 24/09/2020 15:16

Don’t worry op.

So much going on at the moment.

BumbleFlump · 24/09/2020 15:17

Easily done, wouldn’t have happened if they had staffed checkouts

angelcakebananabrain · 24/09/2020 15:17

@ScatteredMama82

Your mind was just elsewhere. I once rang the company that owned an ATM, in a right state as it had given me the money but not given me back my card. Turns out it had, and the card was already back in my purse! I have no recollection of taking it out of the machine.
I’ve done this! The machine had run out of money and swallowed my card, or so I thought. With the encouragement of the queue behind me I stomped into the bank to complain, the girl went to check for my card and said it wasn’t there. She then leaned in and quietly said “are you sure it’s not back in your purse?”

I checked, and sure enough there it was. She was lovely about it and even mimed giving me back my card and loudly apologised for the inconvenience, I guess as she could see how embarrassed I was! I’m super shy so it was literally the only time I’ve ever stood up for myself and I was bloody wrong Blush

(Should point out here I wasn’t rude or shitty with her, just determined to get my card back rather than phone and cancel it)

LakieLady · 24/09/2020 15:19

I once forgot to collect my children from school

Pmsl!

Did the school ring you to see what had happened?

LadyofTheManners · 24/09/2020 15:20

Op don't worry, I had a similar situation and was treated like a petty thief, I had actually thought I'd paid but their sodding terminal glitched, the manager actually apologised after his employee had done embarrassing me.
It could be you did actually put your card through and it didn't register properly.

fluffedup · 24/09/2020 15:22

I did something once when I was a student that I still cringe about 34 years later. I'd been studying hard all day and my brain was like porridge, so I decided to nip to the local shop to give my head a rest.

I walked in and starting choosing stuff from the shelves, but the man behind the counter was angry at me for some reason and started shouting at me. But he wasn't speaking English and I didn't understand.

After a while I gave up trying to understand and assumed he thought I was someone else. I carried on round the (very small) shop picking up what I needed, then when I reached the angry man at the till, I went to lift the wire basket onto the counter ... and realised that I wasn't carrying a wire basket. I'd just been putting the stuff directly into my bag.
I apologised as I was emptying the bag and paying for the stuff, but I don't think he understood me. I think he thought I was just being cheeky.

BumbleFlump · 24/09/2020 15:22

DD (nearly 2) shop lifted two rather snazzy purple rubbers from the kids farm toy shop - I took them back as soon as I noticed them nestling in the bottom of the buggy 🤦🏻‍♀️

I had to stay at various hotels in Ireland, whilst clearing out my deceased parents' home. At the last one, I was having a lovely, sympathetic chat with the owner, whilst waiting for my taxi to the airport. I was on my way out the door with my luggage, when the lady at the desk had to gently remind me to come back and pay.....

opinionatedfreak · 24/09/2020 15:34

I’ve done this. Issue with contactless card reader which didn’t take the payment and I didn’t notice. I never get a receipt so that wasn’t a clue.

Security guy came after me.

I’m a regular so fortunately he didn’t make a big deal about it but the potential consequences of it worried me.

LindaEllen · 24/09/2020 15:43

It can be so easy to go onto autopilot - even more so with a task you've done so many times before, so you might not pay attention as it's almost like second nature. But then something happens like something doesn't scan, or we start thinking about something else, and we end up forgetting something.

I've left my partner's card in a card machine at a self scan checkout twice. He wasn't happy with me either time because he had to be the one to pick it up with his proof of ID. It just happens sometimes. We have a slip of thought and we do something silly.

But let me tell you, they will see things like that every day - the assistant literally won't think of it again as soon as she gets off shift because it's so common.

Imloosingmyshit · 24/09/2020 15:44

Don’t worry sounds perfectly normal brain fart to me!

Tophy124 · 24/09/2020 15:46

Please don’t worry! I’ve had a waiter run after me and on to a bus as I accidentally walked out without paying 😂🙈 Embarrassing with a bus audience! Think we have all done this or worse

Emeraldshamrock · 24/09/2020 15:48

You must be under pressure. I think as we do things automatically there's no thought process. I left the local store recently and couldn't remember if I had tapped my card I went back in I had paid it felt very strange.

Eckhart · 24/09/2020 15:48

@RubyRedBerry

I stopped at a green light yesterday

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who's done this.

OP, you were on autopilot. Had the clear thought that you'd have to put your PIN in , then collected the shopping and left without doing it. Totally normal, especially when stressed or tired. Have a little laugh at yourself, but there's no need to be embarrassed.

Serin · 24/09/2020 16:08

I once went to vet, checked in, sat in the waiting room and then realised I'd forgot the dog. Blush

AntiSocialDistancer · 24/09/2020 16:11

I did the same thing once! We actually wanted to return an item we had literally just bought as we changed our minds.

We went to customer services to return for a refund and then she asked us for a receipt which we couldn't findreceipt... We were convinced we had paid!!! They called someone over and our transaction was still on the self scanner ready to be finalised Shock

Eckhart · 24/09/2020 16:11

@Serin

Grin I bet the dog didn't mind, though.

ZoeTurtle · 24/09/2020 16:24

@RubyRedBerry

I stopped at a green light yesterday.
I did that too! I'm glad nobody was behind me.

Don't worry, OP, it happens.

Wolke · 24/09/2020 16:25

As a student, I was once buying a few cleaning items in Wilkos. My head was obviously somewhere else. As I was walking away from the shop, I started to wonder why I'd paid so little. I realised that rather than pick things up after they'd been scanned I'd somehow picked some of the items off the belt before they'd been scanned. Completely unintentional and I felt awful about it afterwards but too embarrassed to go back. I ended up putting a donation into the next charity pot that I saw, but occasionally still feel guilty. I think we've all been there.

YouBelongHere · 24/09/2020 16:43

It happens! I remember paying when I was a teenager I paid with cash at the self-services, got myself a McDonalds and then when I went to get the bus realised I'd never picked up my change. I was so annoyed as I had to walk home then and the maccies was freezing by the time I got back Sad

My Mom also woke up one morning and realised her purse was missing from her bag - she looked high and low until she admitted defeat, cancelled her debit & credit card AND my brothers card (he has severe learning disabilities so she deals with his finances) only for my step-dad to later find it tucked in at the end of the bed Confused

Eckhart · 24/09/2020 16:47

I once went out before breakfast and bought a book I was really excited about reading. I had the morning off, and visions of 3 hours curled up reading in my armchair. Got home from the bookshop, ate breakfast, and then couldn't find the book. I knew it was in the house because I'd struggled with book and keys on the way in. Spent all morning looking for it, bewildered. Finally gave up when I got hungry for lunch; found the book in the fridge.

AnnieOH1 · 24/09/2020 16:50

I've had Tesco self-scan reset on me more than once at the exact point of paying. It always seems to happen if I've got lots of goods too to make it worse. My point is that it may have been absolutely nothing that you have done.

BegYaParsnips · 24/09/2020 16:50

I went to the McDonald’s drive thru last week. Ordered. Paid at the window. Then drove off without stopping to collect my grub. Got home and it wasn’t until DP asked where his quarter pounder was that I realised
