do you know anyone personally who has died from Covid?

Just that really. Posting here for traffic.

After a conversation with my mother we both agreed that people who have actually personally lost someone due to Covid are more likely to take it more seriously. Have you lost someone? Has this affected your attitude towards the virus and your own behaviour?

Yes and no.
A close family member died
I was already taking the necessary precautions because I'm not a sociopathic selfish fuckwit. I kind of believe in doing things for the greater good.
And my dead relative would be the same.

CallarMorvern · 24/09/2020 10:51

Yes, I've lost a family member. No it hasn't changed my actual response to the virus, but it makes me feel far angrier towards those people who say it's a hoax or that we are sheep for wearing masks.

MorganKitten · 24/09/2020 10:51

Three people. And there’s been several in care homes family members are in but I do t personally know them.

Lemonsyellow · 24/09/2020 10:52

No, I don’t know anyone personally. But I take the virus very seriously.

ColleagueFromMars · 24/09/2020 10:54

I have been lucky enough to have not lost anybody to covid yet (touch wood). I have known 3 people who have died with but not of it (old age and cancer). I'm about the most careful about covid person that I know.

thedaywewillremeber · 24/09/2020 10:55

Unfortunately yes. No it hasn’t as I was already following all the guidelines however I now feel angry when I see people who aren’t.

Stripesgalore · 24/09/2020 10:56

No. I don’t take the virus seriously because I am not allowed to. I work in retail and am put at risk every day. I have to engage in massive cognitive dissonance and pretend to myself the risk is much lower than it is.

FlouncerInDenial · 24/09/2020 10:57

Two. Both back in April.
No, it hasn't changed my behaviour or attitude, but I'm sad for the loss of both

yelyah22 · 24/09/2020 10:57

Yes, and yes I'm taking it seriously (compared to others in my peer group, for example).

Popcornismandatory · 24/09/2020 10:58

Yes and she wasn't elderly or in a vulnerable category either.

dementedpixie · 24/09/2020 10:58

I sont personally know anyone who has had it never mind died from it. Still trying to do my bit though

PimlicoJo · 24/09/2020 10:58

No, but I do take the virus seriously.

Fairyliz · 24/09/2020 10:58

I don’t actually know anyone who has had a positive test never mind died. However I do know the following:-
Someone who had a tightness in their chest and difficulty breathing. Stayed at home isolating as instructed, had a massive heart attack and died. Could they have been saved if they they had seen a doctor and been sent to hospital?
Someone who had stomach pains in April but too scared to see GP. Was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in early September died last week.
Someone who attempted sucide because of the isolation.
Several people who have lost jobs with no chance of finding a new one and are really struggling.
Someone I suspect is experiencing domestic violence, but I don’t know how to help.

I think trying to prevent coronavirus deaths will cause more harm than good.

aLilNonnyMouse · 24/09/2020 10:59

Lost my BIL who was also my best friend. We almost lost his sister too. The worst part is knowing he died alone.

I know a few people who have had it and all really struggled to recover. Some are still struggling now months later.

People not taking this seriously wind me up so much. It's not a flu. It's horrible and deadly and it's leaving a huge path of destruction, death, and disability behind as it passes through the population.

motherofdxughters · 24/09/2020 10:59

No. I know two people who were hospitalised for weeks on end and even in an induced coma but they both, thankfully, survived.

ComeOnGordon · 24/09/2020 11:01

I work in a hospital so saw patients who died from covid. Don’t know anyone in my personal life who died and actually only know one person who tested positive but still take it seriously and am very glad I live in an area with very low levels of Covid.

Cocomarine · 24/09/2020 11:04

Yes, family member in April.
Quite a few “friend of...” - maybe 15? But that’s because I’m in quite a big hobby group nationally.
I don’t think it’s changed my behaviour - I’m fairly rule-following anyway, and definitely not a whacko conspiracy theorist.

ilovesooty · 24/09/2020 11:06

@Popcornismandatory

Yes and she wasn't elderly or in a vulnerable category either.
Same.
DilloDaf · 24/09/2020 11:10

Yes, a friend who was a GP. He was 41, slim and very fit, sailed, ran marathons.
He got infected right at the beginning, before the March lockdown. He must have been hit with a huge viral load as was seeing coughing patients in small office with windows closed, the waiting room was always packed.
Hospitals weren't used to treating Covid patients then.

SassenachWitch · 24/09/2020 11:11

No, and I don't know of anyone who has tested positive.

EekThreek · 24/09/2020 11:11

The closest person I know was our Director of Manufacturing at work, and I didn't know him personally.
I take this seriously and we've stuck to the rules all along, although as a family of 5 we are finding it harder to stick to the rule of 6, so we've seen our parents making a group of 7 a couple of times. It also doesn't help that I live in a county with very low case numbers and transmission rates so I see people around me not taking it at all seriously.

MayFayre · 24/09/2020 11:11

No.

Also know very few people who have had it.

I do take it seriously though because my closest friend is very vulnerable and would likely die or be very ill if they got it.

notanothertakeaway · 24/09/2020 11:12

I know one who was in hospital for a short while and quite shaken by the experience

I know a couple of people who think they had it

Don't know anyone who died

I'm taking it seriously. Fed up of people suggesting the elderly should stay indoors so that the young can get on with life as normal

86jabberwocky · 24/09/2020 11:12

No and I don't know anyone who has had it as well.

DilloDaf · 24/09/2020 11:12

Forgot to say, yes I do take it seriously and follow all the guidelines.
