do you know anyone personally who has died from Covid?

Just that really. Posting here for traffic.

After a conversation with my mother we both agreed that people who have actually personally lost someone due to Covid are more likely to take it more seriously. Have you lost someone? Has this affected your attitude towards the virus and your own behaviour?

I am seeing people up to the rule of 6 limit, I haven't been abroad. Am I "taking it seriously", a selfish fuckwit or something else? Does everyone really have to be divided in this way

Yes, what exactly does ‘take it seriously mean’? My entire household contracted it already and only one of us really suffered but never to the point I was worried for their life. So I personally do not worry in the slightest despite a family member passing away from it.

I know it exists, I take precautions and obey the law. But am I ‘a selfish prick’ for going out for meals / to the cinema etc if I’m sticking to the rules?

For me no quality of life is no life at all.

Thisisneverending · 24/09/2020 11:50

Yes a single mum with 3 young children that unfortunately now are in care.
I’ve always taken it extremely seriously. I remember the early scenes in China and Italy and I also remember early on an epidemiologist on tv stating that it was worse than Ebola,

So even though we have not been able to open our nightclub since March, are likely to be homeless and loose the business that we have built up and invested in for over 12 years I still take it seriously and despair at the total selfish fuckwits that don’t..

IndecentFeminist · 24/09/2020 11:52

I haven't, still being sensible about it though

Janegrey333 · 24/09/2020 11:53

No.

Beamur · 24/09/2020 11:54

Several of my friends have lost their elderly parents to this. I know quite a few people of my age and younger who have had it but thankfully recovered ok. One still hasn't fully regained their sense of smell though.

DilloDaf · 24/09/2020 11:54

There's ongoing research into the possibility that being young and superfit may be a risk factor.

Pyjamaface · 24/09/2020 11:54

I don't even know anybody that has had it, let alone died. I live in a county with a very low infection rate and my local area is lower than that still.

I/we still take it seriously and will carry on doing so. I have an elderly mother, a sister with COPD and a friend with several health conditions to consider. DS's appointments have continued albeit over the phone where possible, mental health is taking a bit of a battering but we are working on it.

I see very few people without masks, hand sanitizer is at the door of every shop and people use it

Threesocks · 24/09/2020 11:56

Yes, my best friend, female, late 40's, fit and healthy, no underlying conditions, think she caught it on the bus. She was recovering (never needed hospital treatment) and then threw a blot clot (Covid makes your blood much more sticky) home and died of a pulmonary embolism at home.

Also, two parents of friends, who both had underlying conditions.

Initially made me want to lock my family up and never go back out into the world again. Obsessive study of the statistics and risk assessment has pulled me back from this view. I am still very cautious though.

LakieLady · 24/09/2020 11:58

No, but I take it seriously nevertheless.

Because I'm not a twat. Well, not that much of a twat, anyway.

SoulofanAggron · 24/09/2020 11:59

A friend's mum died of it really early on. Oh and my bestie's on dialysis and several at the centre have died of it.

LimitIsUp · 24/09/2020 11:59

I don't know anyone who has died from it but I do know someone who has had it (18 year old friend of my dd who was doing shifts in a care home)

I take it seriously - i.e. following social distancing, hand hygiene and mask wearing and I am cautious about indoor spaces. However, I can't let 'the fear' take over since my son (16 and in sixth form) could easily contract it and pass it to me, as could my daughter. I won't let myself be paralysed by fear

Hadjab · 24/09/2020 12:00

Yes, my aunt and parents of three friends

Milliways · 24/09/2020 12:00

Yes, 2 and neither had underlying conditions.
1 in their 40’s and 1 in their 60’s

Also seen a lot through work, none personal but it affects you.

Cherrybakewellll · 24/09/2020 12:01

Try working in a care home. Multiple deaths in one day from it.

unmarkedbythat · 24/09/2020 12:02

No. I've known lots of people have it, quite a few have it and be quite unwell (three needing general hospital admissions, one of those ventilated), but no one I know personally has died. Although a close colleague's BIL has died.

I take it seriously regardless.

Supertree · 24/09/2020 12:04

Yes, a relative and a neighbour have died. Both caught it in hospital. It hasn’t changed how I behave, I follow the rules and try to get on with it. I

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 24/09/2020 12:04

Yes, and even if you don’t know anyone who has you should be taking it seriously.

So many selfish selfish people out there

ReggieCat · 24/09/2020 12:05

Yes, three. None of them elderly or with underlying conditions.

2 were NHS employees and the other a social worker. In addition, my brother and a close friend - both NHS workers - were critically ill at one point. They are both ill with long covid now.

MegaClutterSlut · 24/09/2020 12:06

My friends mum died from it. I've always taken it seriously from day one because I'm not an arsehole and don't want to help spread it to the vulnerable

VeraPink · 24/09/2020 12:06

I don’t know anyone who has even had it, let alone died. But I am taking it very seriously and following the rules because I am not a selfish fuckwit.

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 24/09/2020 12:07

No, noone who's died. Lots of people who've had it (including some who are classed as vunerable), who have all recovered without that long covid issue.

It does make it hard to be afraid of the virus. I'm following the rules - we are currently stuck back on homeschooling (fine now!) Dcs as dc2 had a cold that turned into a nasty cough, we got a test on Tuesday and am still waiting for the result.

But I'm following rules because I am someone who follows rules, im not all that worried.

JudgeRindersMinder · 24/09/2020 12:07

My dad

Seeitsortit · 24/09/2020 12:08

My dad. It has caused severe stress for me and the knock on effect on the family has been horrific.
A close neighbour who is a nurse had it and recovered.
I don’t talk much about how I feel about the virus as the idiots out there haven’t got a fucking clue and don’t care, so why should I risk my blood pressure going too high?

munchbunch12 · 24/09/2020 12:09

No, I don't know anyone who's had it at all, let alone been very ill or died.

Puffthemagicdragongoestobed · 24/09/2020 12:09

Yes, a former member of my DH's team in a previous job. She died quite early on during lockdown.
