do you know anyone personally who has died from Covid?

Just that really. Posting here for traffic.

After a conversation with my mother we both agreed that people who have actually personally lost someone due to Covid are more likely to take it more seriously. Have you lost someone? Has this affected your attitude towards the virus and your own behaviour?

Several people I know have had to try and attend virtual funerals, the technology has not always worked well. One person had tried to attend 5, last time I heard from them, including the bridesmaid from their wedding (not a recent wedding so not caused by that). The dead were by no means all elderly or with pre-existing conditions and they all could have expected many more years of life. So I've always taken this more seriously than my personal risk and get pretty cross with anyone who suggests the young are not at risk. It's a low risk but when millions get the virus you may be, or know, the unlucky one.

Picklypickles · 24/09/2020 12:11

I'm in Devon and we've not had many cases fortunately. I know one lady in my village who has had it, in her mid 30's and she said she was very poorly in bed for a month with it.

I'm worried about catching it myself tbh, I've only got one kidney left and I really don't want it to be attacked.

Chloemol · 24/09/2020 12:11

Yes, and people who have had it, one still suffering months later and yes I take it seriously

7755MM · 24/09/2020 12:13

I've not heard anyone who has died - but today in news, apparently 20+ London bus drivers have died - thats terrible.

PinkMonkeyBird · 24/09/2020 12:14

Yes

MsEllany · 24/09/2020 12:15

I don’t even know anyone that’s had it. I still wear a mask when out and about and have been (voluntarily) pretty much self-isolating where possible.

Dita73 · 24/09/2020 12:16

Don’t know anyone who’s had it let alone died

Witchend · 24/09/2020 12:17

Yes, despite being in a low area. The first person was a huge shock, two of the others weren't, although they weren't expected to die shortly, they were frail, so having caught it, we knew their chance of recovering was lower.

SunFl0werSun4 · 24/09/2020 12:17

Yes have been talking it seriously, since the beginning

Yes know one person, so far

BearSoFair · 24/09/2020 12:17

One that I knew in person, and know of one other (friend of a friend).

SirVixofVixHall · 24/09/2020 12:18

A couple of possible deaths very early on, pre testing, so not confirmed.
I do know a number of people left with serious and permanent health issues though, and I feel that is the neglected big issue.

OwlYouNeedIsLove · 24/09/2020 12:19

Not died but a 10 year old child in my family was in hospital for a while and very nearly put into an induced coma before she started to recover.

Very scary.

TheMamaYo · 24/09/2020 12:19

Yes, and I think I’ve always taken this quite serious. It boils my piss when people say it is a hoax. As for wearing masks etc, I kind of wish it would become a more regular thing in high footfall areas, besides just Covid.

I do get that some people think the world is over reacting, when you look at the death rate percentage. But if we didn’t take the steps we did so far, surely it would have been higher.

So sick of all of this though. I’m sure everyone will appreciate a normal life a hell of a lot more than we did before.

BearSoFair · 24/09/2020 12:20

That's deaths, not cases! People who have had it I know around 5. Before widespread testing so not confirmed as cases but assumed to be because of the symptoms.

RickOShay · 24/09/2020 12:22

Yes my father in law. A local chap is still in hospital, he’s re learning how to walk. He is mid fifties.

alreadytaken · 24/09/2020 12:24

And I know personally someone who has had it, thankfully not seriously enough to need hospital care.

Emeraldshamrock · 24/09/2020 12:24

Yes my DM age was 69. She died in April she was discharged after a week as she had no symptoms she tested positive in a&e.
She went down hill after 2 days at home quickly was readmitted and died shortly after.
BE WARNED = SHE NEVER ONCE HAD A COUGH AND ONLY HAD A HIGH TEMP DURING THE LAST 3 DAYS)
2 people from the estate died too.
It is really high in Dublin ATM.

SurreyHillsGirl · 24/09/2020 12:27

No, I know someone of a similar age to me, in good health, who was hospitalised and nearly died.

I know lots of people who tested positively.

I take the virus seriously.

You get a lot of thick people that don't know anyone who has tested positive and therefore that must mean that the virus doesn't exist Hmm

Florencex · 24/09/2020 12:29

No I don’t know anyone that has died.

From what she says, my sister possibly had it in February before it really took off and before testing.

Xigris · 24/09/2020 12:29

A parent at the school died from covid but I didn’t know him well. I don’t know anyone personally but I work in intensive care and it’s been / will continue to be fucking horrific.

Flowers to all of you who’ve suffered loss because of this.

TheSoapyFrog · 24/09/2020 12:32

I don't even know anyone personally who has had it let alone died from it.
I guess i haven't really taken it as seriously as some because of that, but I have been and will continue to follow the guidelines.

omg35 · 24/09/2020 12:32

My dental nurse died. Not a close friend or anything obvs but I felt sad for her family and will miss her smiling face. I'm taking it seriously more so because I'm pregnant and fat to start with I think

Sirzy · 24/09/2020 12:33

Yes two people, couldn’t attend funerals so had to stand outside the church just to pay my respects.

Nomoreilove · 24/09/2020 12:34

I know of 5 that died. 2 elderly. The rest were early/mid sixties who could’ve easily lived for many more years. One of them left behind their child in their early thirties. Their child doesn’t have any siblings and their dad died young. So they’re all alone, went through a mental breakdown and has tried to kill themselves numerous times. Is going to lose their home as they can’t keep up with the payments.

I know people who weren’t taking it seriously but when the news of the 4 people that died they completely changed and became scared. Rightly so, they were of the same ethnic background and age. It easily could’ve been them and not the ones that died.
It annoys me when people say that only those with underlying health problems die. People that have asthma for example or certain diabetes can live until their elderly just like anyone else.

combatbarbie · 24/09/2020 12:35

Yes my cleaner at work in May. She was in for a routine op for crohns, caught covid and died a week later.
