AIBU to want this parent jailed?

They got a covid test result of positive on Saturday. In Monday they sent their year 7 child to school. Tuesday the child was tested, Weds positive result, Thurs the whole year group goes home for two weeks. As a teacher, and vulnerable, mixing with 700 kids a day, I want him jailed (in two weeks!!)

YANBU. Who would send their child to school with a positive COVID result? It's a bit like those people with COVID who spit on paramedics

Tunnocks34 · 25/09/2020 06:17

Jailed no..

But she’s an arsehole you o completely understand why your so annoyed

Bl3ss3dm0m · 25/09/2020 08:17

I am with you OP, prison is the only real deterrent. Pp who said it is not that serious a crime is wrong, as potentially his actions could lead to the deaths of any number of people - if you kill 4+ people you become a serial killer or mass murderer.

NiceGerbil · 25/09/2020 09:12

Amazed at the people who see a person who does this in the same category as Ian Huntley or Fred West!

I'd say the people who would imprison them with all the consequences and law changes listed upthread are s bit deranged personally.

Just my view obviously.

NiceGerbil · 25/09/2020 09:14

The toll on all the children of being put into care is not minimal either.

Even if you think the parents need jail, the main effects will be on the children.

So not only are we getting police state yay but also the sins of the parent visited on the child!

Loads of people have seriously lost the plot.

The Manx people evidently don't think so![/quote]
No they don't. One guy got 8 weeks in prison for going to work after arriving from the UK without quarantining for 14 days. Recently someone got 2 weeks in prison for stopping to get petrol on their drive home from the ferry . Someone else got a prison sentence for stopping to get shopping on the way home from the ferry/ airport.

I think it is quite Draconian. On the other hand they have no restrictions whatsoever within the island so they are completely reliant on people isolating when they arrive from abroad. The only cases they have had so far ( after the initial lockdown) are in people from abroad ( mostly UK) who have been self isolating so it had been contained

And on the taxpayer too, of course. I'm just thrilled at the prospect of having to pay for all this foster care and extra court and prison space. Wonder how many people that'll indirectly kill off when we take the money from elsewhere to fund it?
NiceGerbil · 25/09/2020 12:31

The other point is all these people seem happy for the police, courts, prison workers to be exposed.

They seem to think it's instant death (not sure why) but are happy to expose a swathe of workers in the justice system to it.

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 25/09/2020 13:39

They do, don't they? You're the first person to have even mentioned those workers and their families. And of course the foster carers we'd need too: they're no more covid resistant than the rest of us.

NiceGerbil · 25/09/2020 14:49

I've mentioned it on this thread already couple times- no response to it.

Long thread I know but still.

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 25/09/2020 15:33

I imagine it's more the inconvenience of your point rather than the length that's the issue.

BluebellsGreenbells · 25/09/2020 17:05

IOM jail people for breaking quarantine laws. Covid free for 120 days.

Your call.

NiceGerbil · 25/09/2020 17:43

What do you mean? Covid free for 120 days?

So yes you want the law changed
You want s prison term for anyone breaking quarantine.
Presumably you'd have them held on remand? Could be months before it gets to court.
Many children will need to be taken into care. Very large numbers of people are not doing it properly after holidays etc.
You're ok with exposing police, courts, prison officers and prisoners to the virus for some reason. Even if you don't care about prisoners (you know there are pregnant women in prison I assume and prisons are already high risk for covid) why don't you care about the police, court officials, prison officers etc?

We'd need to build more prisons and find a lot of care places for children which are already stretched.

Age of criminal responsibility is 13 in UK I think up to death. So it's a lot of different types of prisoners you'd have to deal with.

I'm interested to see how many people think all this is a good idea. It's really eye opening.

Mittens030869 · 25/09/2020 17:49

That’s just so responsible, and I understand the anger. I suspect the OP is using hyperbole, as she knows that the offenders won’t go to jail. I do think, though, that the £1,000 fine should actually be enforced on offenders so that there is a genuine deterrent to parents being this responsible. Because there are a lot of vulnerable people working in schools or staff/families with vulnerable family members.

Mittens030869 · 25/09/2020 17:53

I meant ‘this irresponsible’. Blush

I’m potentially being unreasonable myself, I know that a lot of parents have to work and need their DC to be in school. But it’s very short-sighted, as if their DC’s school bubble has to self-isolate, then they’ll have to self-isolate for 2 weeks, which is worse.

(I’ve been unwell with long Covid for a long time, so I do think a lot of people aren’t taking the virus seriously enough, it isn’t just about deaths.)

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 25/09/2020 18:14

IOM does not have endemic covid, whereas various parts of the UK now likely do. That and the tiny numbers involved mean you're not potentially endangering a great many people through imprisonment and foster care and it's also nothing like as expensive (remember that money spent on prisons and foster care is money not available for the NHS). It is an entirely different kettle of fish imprisoning people for not quarantining at the stage they're at that the stage we're at. For a UK version not to present such dangers, it would have had to be done months ago. It was not.

BluebellsGreenbells · 25/09/2020 18:30

Court is the next day via video link

Sentences are 6/8 weeks for putting the population at risk and cost to NHS

Their choice that’s the law.

NiceGerbil · 25/09/2020 19:01

We have court one day after arrest and charge for covid

While other crimes take months and months? Serious crimes? Any crimes? Next day for covid?

Bloody hell.

I didn't know it was already a punishable offence with prison on a fast track basis.

Fucking hell that's really scary.

NiceGerbil · 25/09/2020 19:06

I can only find info saying £1000 fine.

Link please.

I know there are different laws in different parts of the UK. I'm in England. OP talks about a year group of 700 children so must be a city somewhere.

Link please.

NiceGerbil · 25/09/2020 19:09

Sorry my mistake.

Teacher mixes with 700 kids a day.

We don't know there this school is. Where is it fast tracked with court next day (!) and 6-8 weeks prison?

What about the prison officers and police?

And 6-8 weeks is a long time to be in care if you're a child, especially a young child.

NiceGerbil · 25/09/2020 19:12

We do not know where op is.

Are you guessing as to where op is or have I missed something.

Legoandloldolls · 25/09/2020 19:19

Why stop there? Death by pitch fork or public stoning to death surely?

Yes it's a ticklish judgement call but I'm not sure it warrants fucking up there entire life with a criminal record dies it?

This is what scares me more than during of covid.

Sentencing by pitchforks.

It makes me want to be more introverted, less open, less trusting and more look after and protect my own then I have ever experienced in my life. Like your at the sidelines of a public riot in the USA but rather than being one of those raiding the shops, I'm behind my locked door with a shotgun. That kind of how this talk makes me feel. I have done nothing wrong but it makes me feel scared and suspicious about other people.

Dogsaresomucheasier · 25/09/2020 19:37

I would share your anger.

There is the pesky problem that it would harm the child more than the parent but I do think families that can’t follow Covid-safe policy should lose their entitlement to a place at school.

I also think government should be doing a lot more to make isolating financially easier; automatic loan repayment and interest freezes without damage to credit rating; 2 weeks housing benefit on top of sick pay...what ever people need.

And a legal protection for anyone needing time off for work for isolation/childcare that is robustly enforced, but we’ve been fighting for maternity rights to be enforced for years!

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 25/09/2020 19:40

There is the pesky problem that it would harm the child more than the parent but I do think families that can’t follow Covid-safe policy should lose their entitlement to a place at school.

This is a genuinely terrible idea. What do you think would happen to those children if we were to do this, and do you think it would be particularly conducive to either their welfare or the covid prevention efforts?

MyWitzEnd · 25/09/2020 20:44

I dont wish harm to anyone but those of you who put your need to work over safety.of people might do well to remember that if loved ones do get ill.
