AIBU to want this parent jailed?

They got a covid test result of positive on Saturday. In Monday they sent their year 7 child to school. Tuesday the child was tested, Weds positive result, Thurs the whole year group goes home for two weeks. As a teacher, and vulnerable, mixing with 700 kids a day, I want him jailed (in two weeks!!)

I agree this parent was incredibly irresponsible, but it's unlikely in the extreme that the entire year group was sent home because of just one child. Under the guidance a school may have an outbreak if it has two or more cases within a fortnight. So if this school had two cases including this child, it would still have counted as an outbreak irrespective of whether he went in or not.

1starwars2 · 24/09/2020 08:12

Our school whole year, plus those on same transport all had to isolate for 2 weeks. Some schools are sending home whole secondary year group for one case....

OpenlyGayExOlympicFencer · 24/09/2020 08:12

If you're actually being literal, YABU. Short prison sentences are a fucking terrible idea. They're an expensive and inefficient luxury that we simply can't afford at the moment.

Inkpaperstars · 24/09/2020 08:13

I agree OP.

catgotmytongue · 24/09/2020 08:18

For those people saying "unclench and calm down", that selfish individual has already caused far more widespread financial, emotional and possibly physical damage than many people who are already in jail.
They sent a child who was very likely to have a virus that preys on the vulnerable into a school with 700 students. That is 100 children now in isolation, a year 7 so potentially many parents unable to work. They may well have already spread that virus with potentially deadly consequences for some. They will have caused untold anxiety to many including staff who then have to deal with the consequences of sending a whole year group. They did this knowingly and willingly. Yes they deserve severe punishment.

redlockscelt · 24/09/2020 08:19

Maybe the government should put in place a house arrest system where people like this get tagged no, I don't really mean this

Cakestandkitchen · 24/09/2020 08:25

A hefty fine definitely. What a terrible attitude to have.

Brunilde · 24/09/2020 08:27

Yes I think they should. And anyone who has a positive result and passes the virus on, resulting in someone's death, should be charged with manslaughter.

So selfish to knowingly mix with others when you know for a fact you have it. And that is the problem we have, too many people only concerned about themselves and their own 'risk assessment' to give a shit about anyone else.

im5050 · 24/09/2020 08:29

If I were in charge I would put a tag on the parents 😂 like they do non violent prisoners
That way if they leave the house the company monitoring them would know

zafferana · 24/09/2020 08:29

I'd report him. There is a large fine applicable now for those who don't self quarantine.

Great minds think alike.

@MyWitzEnd

How do you know (for sure) that this all happened.

If it did then I agree the parents need to be punished.

I'm astounded that someone managed to get 2 tests and 2 positives on the same child within the time frame when I couldn't even get one

Quarantino · 24/09/2020 08:35

I've been wondering since the start how soon it will be until we see legal action against such people. I wonder what the level of proof will be. If I was a parent I'd feel justified in 'suing for lost income' or similar although no idea how feasible that'd be!?

I read it as the parent tested positive first, then sent kid into school, where the kid tested positive shortly after.

thedancingbear · 24/09/2020 08:39

Jailed, no.

Prosecution, fine, criminal record - no problem with that.

What a stupid, selfish fucker.

willloman · 24/09/2020 08:43

Where are the people who are meant to be following up on positive results, though? Shouldn't a local community officer or some such be sent round to check people are isolating the second they get a positive result? It's not like the govt. don't know who has tested positive? Feel local councils should be more involved in sorting this. Only a local can pop round and check people are doing as needed.

goingtotown · 24/09/2020 08:44

I’m not surprised. Not everyone takes Covid19 seriously, that’s why the virus not going away.

Crunchymum · 24/09/2020 08:46

Sorry I did misread.

This parent is an irresponsible idiot. Still wonder how it came to light the parent had tested positive? Was it through track and trace?

Lasttraintolondon · 24/09/2020 08:47

Don't jail them, make them pay all the lost earnings for the parents that could no longer work. There you go, a punishment that exactly fits the crime.

Laufeythejust · 24/09/2020 08:47

I agree with you. They knowingly put others at risk. I can’t believe how lenient we are with coronavirus. I wonder how many people have been infected because of their stupidity, isn’t the spike in Bolton because of one idiot? The countries economy is screwed and won’t get any better because as a population we are selfish and can’t follow rules.

SoloMummy · 24/09/2020 08:49

Absolutely I agree with your sentiments op.
Once a positive test result has ensued, it's well known the expectations. This behaviour is outrageously selfish. And yes, as a consequence the whole class has been affected, which was avoidable. So yes imprisonment should happen. Imo 6 weeks to 3 months along the same lines that council tax nonpayment is sentenced, because let's face it, this covid abuse is more detrimental!

TheShepherdsCrown · 24/09/2020 08:49

@MaskingForIt

Perhaps the £1,000 fine isn't enough (seriously I've heard people saying they'll pay that because they'll loose more than £1k for isolating) The fine instead should be based on the wages for 2 weeks of those who were forced to isolate as a result, in this case every year 7s parents.

That effectively gives the unwaged cart blanche to do what they like though.

I think what the poster meant was the fine should be based on or equivalent to the lost wages of all of those who had to self isolate. The actual financial cost. Not that the fine would be based on the income of the selfish parents, whether that’s UC, minimum wage or a footballer’s salary.
FippertyGibbett · 24/09/2020 08:49

A woman I know of had symptoms, a test, and didn’t say anything to work until she got a positive test.
Work shut, place fumigated and all staff off 2 weeks.
Absolutely infuriating.

Babyroobs · 24/09/2020 08:52

@Kazakaren

If he had a positive test result yet still sent the child to school, then there absolutely be repercussions. Like a £10,000 fine.
How many could actually pay a 10k fine though, it's very unrealistic. They would end up just paying it off at a couple of pounds a week for years on end and clog up the court system even more.
KenDodd · 24/09/2020 08:53

I think it's really sad that we are so, so selfish now. I'm sure it wasn't so much 'each for their own' in the past.
Frankly who cares about the fine, that should be the least of anyone's worries. If the knowledge that you could pass covid on to someone and they could DIE doesn't keep someone in nothing will.
