The famine in Ethiopia is the first one I have really clear memories of watching being reported, I think.

Wobblysausage · 22/02/2021 17:53

Princess Diana dying

Pollypocket21 · 22/02/2021 18:30

The Challenger Disaster

wlv12 · 22/02/2021 18:33

Freddie Mercury dying - I was 10.

Crabwoman · 22/02/2021 18:36

Ceaușescu being shot on Christmas day. I'm not Romanian, just randomly remember it. I was 7.

Happylittlethoughts · 22/02/2021 18:40

Decilimisation I think

Scarby9 · 22/02/2021 18:42

Aberfan - although I was only 4 or 5.

Jobseeker19 · 22/02/2021 18:43

Diana's death

Scarby9 · 22/02/2021 18:46

I can remember exactly where I was and what we were eating when the Michael Burke Ethiopia famine report came on the news.
My dad and brother were both out so me snd my mum had decided to have a dinner just for us. We had decided on truites menuire with chips and French beans and had just cooked and served up when the report came on. We just couldn't eat it. Felt so guilty faced with that biblical scale famine.

Expectingsomethingwonderful · 22/02/2021 18:58

Moon landing was the most postive one but not sure whether it was the first new item as I think it was a special programme.
Vietnam war and Irish troubles - seemed like they were on the 6 o'clock news every night when we were sent to have bath and go to bed after watching the Magic Roundabout!

PussyCatInChristmasStockings · 22/02/2021 19:05

Not really me remembering a news item, but I do remember my dad being sad because John Lennon had died.
I also remember Aldiniti winning the Grand National.

karala · 22/02/2021 19:07

Aberfan -

bubblebubblebubbletrouble · 22/02/2021 22:20

Although i'm pretty sure some of these tare a long way apart, I can't remember the exact order of events but Live Aid, Kings Cross & Bradford Fires, Chernobyl, Zeebrugge & Marchioness disasters are the big news stories i remember from being a child and a royal being born on 08/08/88.
World Cup 1986 - Gary Lineker & Maradona's hand of god & the Seoul Olympics in 1988 for sporting memories....

mamalovebird · 22/02/2021 22:37

The lifting of the Mary Rose. I was 5 and my dad was in charge of the crane so I was glued to it trying to see if I could see him on telly!

echt · 22/02/2021 22:44

The launch of the first Telstar communications satellite: 1962.

Mostly because the Tornados had a record out about it. Ignore the sub-Kraftwerk additions:

DoreenWinkings · 22/02/2021 22:47

The Herald of Free Enterprise. I was 7.

Spaceprincess · 22/02/2021 22:53

Botulism in John West Salmon.

echt · 22/02/2021 23:01

@Spaceprincess

Botulism in John West Salmon.
God, I remember that. And the swift withdrawal of that advert:
Skysblue · 22/02/2021 23:05

Challenger blowing up

Cynthia13 · 22/02/2021 23:10

James bulger, i was 8. I was sick and staying at my nans for the day, i remember the breaking news coming up and interrupting this morning or similar.

ChippyDucks150 · 22/02/2021 23:12

Live Aid I think. I was allowed to stay up and watch a little of it, I was only 3

ChippyDucks150 · 22/02/2021 23:12

Tell a lie, I was 4.

Yellownotblue · 22/02/2021 23:13

First Quebec separation referendum. 1980

Yellownotblue · 22/02/2021 23:15

@Bloodybridget

I remember the Cuban missile crisis (although I was too young to understand it), Churchill's funeral, and the death of Pope Pius XII.
I was just today telling my kids how the Queen’s first PM was Churchill. Imagine holding the same job for nearly 70 years!

Shame job stability has gone down the drain for us mere mortals.

Greencabin · 22/02/2021 23:16

James Bulger. I was very young, still at primary school and clearly remember seeing his picture on the front of a newspaper in our living room. I think of him often and his family.
