One I remember from my childhood was the announcement in 1954 that food rationing would be ending. Everyone was very happy at the prospect.

BoreOfWhabylon · 22/02/2021 15:14

The first newspaper stories I can remember were of the trial of Adolf Eichmann in 1960.

I can remember the black and white pictures of piles of emaciated bodies in the concentration camps.

Gooseysgirl · 22/02/2021 16:21

Clearly i remember John Lennon being assassinated and I remember watching what must have been the news jubilee celebrations for the queen (?) I must have been very young. As the internet tells me that was 1977. I was born in 1975.

Nodancingshoes · 22/02/2021 16:30

I remember seeing a Newsflash for the Zeebrugge ferry disastor. That's the first one I remember - I was 10. I also remember my mum watching the football game at Hillsbourough when I was 12 and the screen cutting to black. They are both really clear in my memory.

Nodancingshoes · 22/02/2021 16:41

@TurquoiseDress

For some reason I have clear memories of the raising of the Mary Rose ship in 1982 when I'd just turned 4

It's the first clear memory I have for something reported on the TV...I many others from the 80s but that's the first one I can definitely recall

I remember this clearly aswell - I was only 6 but I distinctly remember watching it being brought up
Ponoka7 · 22/02/2021 16:52

The IRA bombings in 1974, I remember having nightmares. I was 6. The next thing was Elvis dying. I can remember buying different newspapers and reading everything I could. I was eight.

Petra died off Blue Peter.
Pol Pot.
Plant a tree in '73

Not sure which happened first, but early memories.

Stealhsquirrelnutkin · 22/02/2021 17:31

The Aberfan disaster. My parents were quite good at sheltering us from frightening news, I was completely oblivious to the Cuban crisis when other children were learning how to duck and cover.

Just remember the look on my mum's face when I walked into the room and saw her watching mud covered men scrambling across rubble. She switched off the telly and distracted me with something, but when my dad got home I eavesdropped and heard them saying that the children were the same age as me.

Bloodybridget · 22/02/2021 17:44

I remember the Cuban missile crisis (although I was too young to understand it), Churchill's funeral, and the death of Pope Pius XII.
