A newspaper article about the 10th? Anniversary of the Stardust Fire Dublin. My mom had taken me from a day out and we were waiting for our bus home. Someone left a newspaper on the seat next to me. I picked it up to pass the time. I think I was about ten and the articles stay with me to this day.

How could I have forgotten Hillsborough? I remember being really shocked at the time - about 9 I think.

I remember my grandparents talking about the miners strikes but not a specific news story.

I remember Italy winning the World Cup in 1982 when I was 3 but I’m not sure if that counts

YukoandHiro · 21/02/2021 23:00

Berlin Wall coming down

The death of Elvis

Letsrunabath · 21/02/2021 23:03

Elvis. My mum woke me up as usual for school and told me. She wasn’t a great fan but I was

Fucket · 21/02/2021 23:05

Early international news story: Berlin Wall
National news story: Hillsborough (also regional)
Regional news story: Twin classmates of mine being killed in a bonfire night tragedy :(

Xiaoxiong · 21/02/2021 23:07

Tiananmen Square - I remember the guy with the carrier bags standing in front of the tanks on TV.

Kljnmw3459 · 21/02/2021 23:07

Bosnian war mid-90s, especially the massacre in Srebrenica. Also the Rwandan massacre in the mid-90s.

needadvice54321 · 21/02/2021 23:09

Berlin Wall - end of the 80's, although that was quite vague

Stronger memories of the Jamie Bulger murder, Warrington bombing etc

CandyLeBonBon · 21/02/2021 23:19

I remember having to watch the news a lit and I remember the blackouts as a result of the 3 day week because I though it was very exciting to live by candlelight! I also remember West Ham winning against Fulham in the fa cup because me and my brother were watching it whilst my mum and her boyfriend were having a blazing row in the next room. I was about 5.

Snowrabbit · 21/02/2021 23:24

The death of Freddie Mercury. Was so sad even then as a little girl and it still makes me feel sad today sometimes.

TurquoiseDress · 21/02/2021 23:37

For some reason I have clear memories of the raising of the Mary Rose ship in 1982 when I'd just turned 4

It's the first clear memory I have for something reported on the TV...I many others from the 80s but that's the first one I can definitely recall

TurquoiseDress · 21/02/2021 23:40

Then the famine in Ethiopia and Band Aid when I was around 5/6 yrs old

Another for the death of Princess Diana

NotMyDayJob · 21/02/2021 23:50

I think Challenger, I remember my dad crying. I had an awareness of the miners strike because my family were from the north east, but we lived down south, when we went back for visits I remember people staring when they heard the southern accents, even though I must have been very young

NotMyDayJob · 21/02/2021 23:52

@downstairsmixup same here, I was mid teens by then, but it sounded like an articulated lorry had crashed outside the house, and the whole house shook

PetraRabbit · 21/02/2021 23:55

Miners' Strike and Falklands War. Both had really heavy news coverage for a long time.

Nannyamc · 21/02/2021 23:58

San Francisco earthquake and grace Kelly death

disneydreaming · 22/02/2021 00:01

The death of Princess Diana.

I was young and had been to the swimming pool with my dad and it was announced on the radio on the way home.
I am not even sure why it stuck with me as I don't imagine I would have been old enough to have much interest in her at the time but I can still remember it vividly.

HotelChocolatMMMMmm · 22/02/2021 00:01

9/11. Left me traumatised and as a result I. Very careful about what I let my kids see on the news. It genuinely had me terrified for years.
