I’m not sure which happened first but it was either James Bulger or IRA Warrington

Covidcorvid · 21/02/2021 22:26

Hills borough stands out.

As does the Acid Rain scare. Newshound used to be full of it with John Craven telling all us kids about the acid rain sweeping towards the U.K. from Europe.

With that and the constant fear of nuclear war the late 70s and early 80s was a scary time to be a kid.

TheLesserOfTwoWeevils · 21/02/2021 22:28

The fall of the Berlin Wall. I was 6 years old. I had no idea what was going on but I remember the feeling that I was watching something momentous.

The famine in Ethiopia, mostly because of all the school assemblies we had about it plus all the Band Aid coverage.

junecat · 21/02/2021 22:35

The Falklands War. I remember being scared they would make my dad go!

OzziePopPop · 21/02/2021 22:36

9/11 I was in my flat as I had a day off work and was watching neighbours. The news interrupted the programme and I was cross until I realised what was happening, then I was horrified and phoned my then bf at work, they were watching it live too. Absolutely awful.

Notjustanymum · 21/02/2021 22:39

Christ. There's some youngsters on here. I was pregnant with my first dc when Diana died. One of my earliest news stories I remember is her getting married to Charles! I feel old

gottakeeponmovin · 21/02/2021 22:42

I know it was an IRA bomb. I think it was either Harrod's or a Victoria. I remember thinking why would anyone admit to planting a bomb? I must have been about 7

Chocsmyfav · 21/02/2021 22:46

Falklands war
Miners strike
Elvis dying

Nanny0gg · 21/02/2021 22:46

If it counts as a 'story', Winston Churchill's funeral

SheisMammyof2 · 21/02/2021 22:47

Elvis's funeral.. we had a black and white TV and I remember the crowds lining the streets clearly. I asked my mum what happened and she just said "Elvis died". I was 3.

Norwaydidnthappen · 21/02/2021 22:47

Diana’s death. I was 4 and I remember as plain as day my Mum saying ‘Oh my god, Diana is dead’. I thought she meant her friend Diana.

Duckswaddle · 21/02/2021 22:49

Jamie Bulger. I was 6 and remember feeling so sick about it.

Mischance · 21/02/2021 22:51

Marilyn Monroe's suicide.

DrunkBetch · 21/02/2021 22:51

Jamie Bulger's murder 😢 I was 5 and living in Liverpool at the time.

MagdasMadHouse · 21/02/2021 22:56

Emeraldshamrock · 21/02/2021 22:56

The troubles in NI.

hm246 · 21/02/2021 22:56

Princess Diana. I had put the tv on then went to my mum and told her the tv is not working the cartoons are not on. She then went and woke my dad up who was sleeping after a night shift. Just remember being puzzled and not understanding.

Bbq1 · 21/02/2021 22:58

The famine in Ethiopia that led onto Live Aid
