scrappydappydoo · 23/09/2020 22:10

Positive - Charles and Diana’s wedding (well it was then)
Negative - IRA bombings

namechangetheworld · 23/09/2020 22:10

The death of Diana - I was 10.

pepsicolagirl · 23/09/2020 22:10

The murder of James Bulger.
I would have been 11. My little brother was 2.

HeartshapedFox · 23/09/2020 22:10

My mum sitting me down to tell me about Hillsborough, I was about 10 I think.

Quaagars · 23/09/2020 22:11

Miners strikes

thefemaleJoshLyman · 23/09/2020 22:11

Charles and Diana's engagement. Then following the wedding, the Falklands war. Not really news but l remember the Moscow Olympics and Alan Wells and Steve Ovett winning golds (not Seb Coe strangely).

TulipsandDa1s1es · 23/09/2020 22:11

1995 Sophie Hook being taken from a tent in her uncles garden. I remember being at my nans for the summer holidays and hearing it on the 9 o clock news

Shaniac · 23/09/2020 22:11

@LomasLongstrider same here. I was 7 and i remember my dm telling me how important it was not to go anywhere with strangers. Poor girl.

thebear1 · 23/09/2020 22:11

Falklands war and miners strikes

Buttybach · 23/09/2020 22:11

The fire in kings cross station

LittleBipper · 23/09/2020 22:12

Chernobyl I think, I thought it was Zeebrugge but I googled at that was later

paisley256 · 23/09/2020 22:12

Zeebrugee I've never forgotten the images.

riotlady · 23/09/2020 22:12

Death of Princess Diana, I remember the footage of all the flowers that were laid for her in London.

ChocolateCakesForAll · 23/09/2020 22:13

The Young girls holly and Jessica who went missing and caretaker murdered them. I can't even remember the year but I must have been about 11

GlitchStitch · 23/09/2020 22:13

Also Zeebrugge. I remember a news item about it interrupting usual programmes. We might have been watching New Faces or something similar? I was 7.

thebiggestmoose · 23/09/2020 22:13

Also the Iranian embassy siege for me.

I remember watching the soldiers dressed completely in black and wearing black balaclavas storming the embassy and being terrified- I thought a war was starting! I was about 4 or 5

1Morewineplease · 23/09/2020 22:13

Moon landing.

Tearingmyhairout1998 · 23/09/2020 22:14

9/11

Sarahlou63 · 23/09/2020 22:14

The power cuts of the mid 70's. The big one was watching Nixon's resignation speech in black and white on the tiny TV in the caravan when we were on holiday.

Foxesinsockses · 23/09/2020 22:15

Falklands invasion, I must have been about 10. Obviously I didn't fully understand it but I was aware of the nuclear threat (in general I mean, not specific to Argentina) and I was terrified. I remember walking back from the newsagent a bit bewildered and wondering if we were all going to die.

paisley256 · 23/09/2020 22:15

And the murders of poor Caroline Hogg and Susan Maxwell I think there were more victims too of was it Robert Black? Awful

SierraHotel · 23/09/2020 22:15

The Hillsborough disaster

GarlicSoup · 23/09/2020 22:15

I watched Princess Anne marry Mark Phillips Grin

TinyMetalBirds · 23/09/2020 22:16

I think it was the famine in Ethiopia. I feel like I remember the Falklands War and the miners, but I might be just be remembering seeing stories on documentaries etc. But definitely remember the images from Ethiopia, which would have been 1984 I think, so I was nine.
Also very clearly remember the Battle of Wapping, Chernobyl and the space shuttle exploding (the first one) but think that was later.
