@Mammyloveswine

Politics massively affects everyone. Teachers are in a unique position where they can influence young minds and they shouldn't abuse that.

When Harold Wilson became PM my Primary school teacher took us all to the dining room to watch him going in to 10 Downing Street because it was a historic event. I still remember it, did it influence me? Possibly, because I have always voted Labour but that could also have been the influence of my Dad and because I think anyone who doesn't is missing something.

That's different Captain.

Presumably your teacher was not offering an opinion, just showing you factual information.

She was obviously in favour though, even at the age of 10 I could see that.

Fall of the Berlin Wall. I was four and came downstairs because I couldn't sleep to find my parents watching it on the news.

The first story I was really interested in was the Jamie Bulger case - I used to get up before my parents, make myself a cup of tea and sit and read The Telegraph (I was a weird seven year old!). I was gripped by it because it was about children and read all of the coverage.

Hillsborough. We were coming home from somewhere in the car and it came on the radio.

'about 10' seems the key age
Mine was the Cuban missile crisis - remember going into the garden and looking in sky for nuclear flash

Ihaveoflate · 26/09/2020 09:20

Hillsborough - I remember the emergency phone number for concerned family flashing up on the screen. I must have been 8 at the time.

The next thing would be Thatcher resigning and the subsequent Tory leadership race.

AnneElliott · 26/09/2020 09:40

Hillsborough. I remember watching it live on the TV as it happened and then later on the news.

Buggabooboo · 26/09/2020 09:44

The Hillsborough tragedy. I was terrified of my dad going to football matches afterwards. I think I was about 4

Berlin Wall coming down - on newsround!

redcarbluecar · 26/09/2020 09:54

No specific one but as a kid in the 70s I remember a lot about Northern Ireland in the news, not that I knew what it was about then. I remember Thatcher becoming PM, the death of John Lennon and being scared that the Falklands would be a nuclear war.

DrDreReturns · 26/09/2020 09:58

I think it was the 1987 election. I was 10.
Not a news story as such but I clearly remember the AIDS campaign from the eighties. I would have been around 8 I suppose.

Splodgetastic · 26/09/2020 10:20

Falklands Conflict.

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 26/09/2020 10:20

at primary school we had to look in the papers at the weekend and write about a news story and once a week three of us would read out our stories, this was @1975/6.. for the life of me i cannot remember anything newsworthy

Strange what children pick up isn't it. To be fair going to parties does sound fun.

@Iwasonceabrownie

This subject has made me feel very very old.
Me too. I think my earliest recollection of a news story is the assassination of JFK.
